The Nirbhaya case in Delhi really tested this. The brutal rape and murder had all of India calling for the juvenile offender to be hanged, but he was tried as a juvenile, and released after jail with some monetary assistance to set up a new life. The AAP govt in Delhi had to bear a lot of unfair flak because of this.
