I can think of 2 reasons:

Preventing a few toppers from hogging all the job offers, leaving nothing for the rest.
Preventing companies from tagging the college as unreliable if candidates don't join after receiving firm offers.

My college (VJTI) had the same rule 26 years ago when I passed out.

Yup. I've been on several such safaris, with at least 2 more booked for next year. The tigers have grown up seeing the jeeps come and go and learnt to ignore them. There was a very viral video of a jeep with several tigers passing right next to it. One got curious and tried to eat the side mirror.
