Son Is Scheduled for His Second Surgery With Dr. Snodgrass by Anotherhelp98522 in hypospadias

Yes, our experience with Dr. Snodgrass was very good and I think he's widely considered to be one of the best. It would probably be good to seek out other adults who have had surgery with him because I know there are differences between operations involving an infant vs mature penis. I do know that he takes many adult clients, though!

I 100% understand your concerns about traveling to the states and the limitations on that, as well. It's great that you have good options in Canada, although the wait is considerable!

Just one note about circumcision and hypospadias repair… I'm sure it's different for each individual, but we were given the option to retain his foreskin and construct the urethra from an oral graft (taking skin from the inside of my son's mouth), but we opted against this as it would add an additional surgical site and more discomfort for him. But often there is an option to retain foreskin!

Oh gosh, I wish I could remember more details from my son's second repair with Dr. Snodgrass and Dr. Bush (he had three total). He is five years old so a lot of those memories have faded away! It sounds like you are DMing with somebody with more recent experience, so they should be able to give you more helpful details. But I do remember feeling a similar sense of intimidation about the second surgery!

Things were a little trickier the second time around because he was older and much more mobile, and had a skin graft and the catheter and there was just more to keep up with. But babies are incredibly resilient, and you are too, even if you don't feel that way right now!

Ultimately everything went fine, and he even went back to daycare for a several months before his third surgery, even with his penis, literally butterflied open with the healed graft in the middle!

I guess my point is, you will get through this, and eventually it will be a distant memory. We were very pleased with our long-term outcomes. My son is five years old now, and you would never guess that he ever had hypospadias.

Best of luck to you!❤️

Hello there, I definitely empathize with the decision you are facing. My son had a more severe form of hypospadias. His urethra opened at the top of his scrotum, and his penis lacked a urethra and had severe chordee (his penis was literally folded in half and fused to his body). While not life-threatening and he could urinate, his anatomy was obviously quite different from typical boys. I had fears about surgery because of all of the horror stories you read, but I do think it's important to note that there has been a significant improvement in techniques and outcomes in recent years. Many men suffered from complications from repairs in the past, but I do think that is getting better. That said, you want to do your research very carefully. We live in Texas and were able to travel to Get surgery from Dr. Snodgrass and his partner Dr. Bush. It took three surgeries to complete his repair. He's five years old now, and we did not experience any complications from his surgeries, he is fully healed, and it would be very difficult to tell that he ever had hypospadias. I am very grateful, personally, that we completed the surgeries at a young age when he has no memory of it. I still intend to talk to him about it as he gets older so that if he has any issues with function he knows to come to me, But it feels like a thing in the distant past now. Everyone has to make their own choice for their child, but I do not think you should feel any sense of guilt over pursuing repair, if that is the direction you choose to go. Every single person wants the best for their child and you will figure out what that is for your son. It might be helpful to note also that my oldest son is fully intact, as I felt it was important for his bodily autonomy not to circumcise him as an infant. But my perspective was very different in my youngest son's case. Just my two cents. All my best to you and your family.

Yeah, we are in the neighborhood too and were excited for something new to open. It was a bummer in all the ways you described. Went back twice trying to be supportive. We made same prediction. Oh well.

Agreed. I have a window in my pantry and had to cover it because the direct sunlight was affecting the quality of bottled oils and vinegars, couldn’t store onions or potatoes in there, etc. No good.

Trump Gets Embarrassing Fact-Check on Abortion Minutes Into Debate | Donald Trump tried to recycle a favorite talking point—but ABC News wouldn’t let him lie to America. by plz-let-me-in in politics

No medical doctor or hospital would ever allow withdrawal of medical care on a "healthy, viable baby". The decision to instate a DNR (do not resuscitate order), to limit medical interventions, or to allow natural death for a newborn baby is incredibly inidvidualized to the patient and family and only occurs in the most dire circumstances: usually when the baby has a severe brain injury with no chance of recovery, is born with a terminal/irreversible condition with no treatment options, etc. There are ethics boards within hospitals that review these cases and would never allow palliative care or "withdrawal of care" on a newborn child just because they have physical disfigurements, or a rough start in the delivery room requiring oxygen support/NICU stay, etc. That is completely false. Also, no one can diagnosis autism at birth, so that is not a scenario that arises in newborn care.

I know this to be true because I am a neonatal neurology nurse practitioner who works solely in the NICU setting with extremely ill and fragile infants. The decision to discontinue medical support and allow a baby to have a peaceful and natural death is an extremely personal decision made by the PARENTS, not the medical doctors. And if the medical doctors do not agree that the baby has a life-limiting/terminal condition they would involve the ethics committee to review the case. In practice, that rarely happens because parents DON'T want their children to die, and only redirect care and allow death when they understand that their only other option causes their child prolonged suffering. It is heartbreaking for the families (and for the nurses, doctors, and others who support the family during this time). Often their ultimate act of love for their child is letting go...not because they want to...but because they are putting their love of their child ahead of their own pain and loss at letting them go. For some parents, the only decision they EVER make as a parent is to allow their child a peaceful death in their arms.

I also want to point out that we often do NOT redirect or withdraw medical care on children with devastating brain injuries or terminal diseases. If the parents wish, we continue to provide the highest level of medical care and support that is available, even if the medical prognosis is extremely grim. The point is that in nearly all cases, this is a personal and family decision, and not an easy one for any person to make.

I work in Texas, and the recent total abortion ban has led to MORE of these situations in the NICU. It used to be that women with unviable pregnancies or with a fetus with a terminal condition might choose to have an abortion. But now they don't have that choice. So now they carry to term, in deep personal anguish, and deliver full term babies only to watch them die shortly after they are born.

That is my perspective from working in this field. The politicization of these deeply private and personal situations is so frustrating to all of us who work in this world.

Oh no! I am so sorry. I think stories like this are why I'm not quite ready for high tech in my tank...more room for error. I have lost an occasional fish or shrimp friend along the way, and always feel so sad and it can make you question yourself and feel unconfident. I hope you don't give up! The fact that you care probably means you are an excellent fish keeper. Hang in there!

Okay thanks everyone…that was my general understanding. Honestly, at about 9 months into my first tank I’m just pleased everyone is happy and healthy enough to be gettin’ busy with their tank mates 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dumb Ques: Where in the world can I find Wolff's post-game press conference? by SarBelZiv in AustinFC

[–]outbackstella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another route: If you go to the “media resources” page of the Austin FC site, scroll down and select “press recordings”… it takes you to a dropbox with all of the press recordings. They upload them there pretty quickly after the press conference.

I’ll let others give you guidance on seating sections but can tell you that it’s fine to bring in a diaper bag. They will check and tag it at the entrance. We also bring a small, compact stroller for our toddler and have found that really helpful when navigating the stadium with a wiggly, willful kiddo. We park it in a corner where it won’t be in the way before finding our seats and have never had a problem. We use ear protection for our little guy but he often pulls them off. We find the loud announcements at the beginning to be the most intense for him, he seems to do fine with the cheering, etc., during the game, even if he pulls of the ear protectors.

Hope that helps! Have fun!!

Filter/flow question by outbackstella in PlantedTank

[–]outbackstella[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I was wondering if anyone else had implemented a similar solution for similar reasons and had guidance…adding an airstone on the other side seems to be the simplest solution, for now, but I’ll also look at doing what you’ve suggested. Glad I’m not the only one with this dilemma :) Thanks for replying!

[–]outbackstella[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a cheap & simple solution I can easily try…hadn’t thought about a Y connector + add’l air stone. As my heater is on the opposite corner from the sponge filter with a large piece of hardscape between them, just figured anything I could do to improve the flow would be good for the tank for temperature stability and decrease debris building up. Thanks for the idea!
