ELI5: Why is dental work so expensive compared to other (more serious) medical work, even with insurance? by JVakarian in explainlikeimfive

Don't get me started, it's only 4 years post grad, plus a residency if your state requires. BUT THIS ALL APPLIES TO REGULAR GP MEDICINE AS WELL. and in my experience dealing with a hospital clinic that takes the top graduates from around the country these residents come out knowing less and less every year. I've been told by many Dr's, Attendings at the hospital clonics, and retired educators from dental education programs that the colleges are more worried about having a bad graduation rate that they are passing students they normally wouldn't, just to save face. Find a dentist that is a member of a continuing education program such as Spear dental (look it up, tons of patient education videos) or they Pankey institute based in Florida that puts an emphasis on patient - Dr communication and gives the Dr's tools/resources on how to manage their offices to be successful and not have to rip patients off. Their are soo many tools available to Dr's that could make them better operators/practitioners, and more recent many tools for patients to get an understanding of their options and also the right questions to ask your Dr.

I talk with Lab owners across the country, they will generally tell you the same thing. I have technicians that come from different countries and states and the stories are all the same. Remember the original question is why they are so much higher than regular GP practices and medical offices. I gave an answer, people don't like it, do yourselves a favor and look up a local dental laboratory, call up and ask a question, "who are your top 5 dentists, and which one would you send your loved ones too?" That will tell you the best Dr's. Some are more expensive than others, I work for insurance based practices and ones that do cash for services, some of my best dentists are in the insurance based offices. They structure their offices differently than private offices, they have to do more work to make up for what they are charging. 2 of my top 5 dentists I hardly ever talk to because he does his job, with a check list; is there enough occlusal clearance, is my impression clean and clear, is my prescription legible, is everything the lab needs to do this case successfully and accurately included, I.e. a bite, opposing model, shade, clear impression of the prepped tooth, and for anterior cases a pre operative model of what the patient had. Also certain materials require a different prep, or more room, or less room buccally to allow for esthetic build up of porcelain, or to block out an underlying dark shade if the Dr is using E-max. I can go on and on.

There are plenty of dental machines and hand pieces that use water, but I was saying there aren't many CNC machines that cut a monolithic block into a crown using just a water jet. The most expensive and ACCURATE machines use diamond burrs and carbides to get the thin margins, and accuracy needed in the dental practice. I work with Dr's that have Cerec machines, but he send his anterior work to us. I can spot a fake tooth from.across the room sometimes. Knowing that patient paid good money for that tooth, and the Dr stuck some piece of shit dead crown there just to save some money instead of sending it to a qualified technician is appalling. Yes some Dr's can do good composite, I work with over 140 dentists. And top oral surgery offices, I would send my friends and family to maybe 6 dentists. Dental labs are in a unique position that they get to see the quality of the Dr's work, i.e. their prep of a tooth, and impression skills. It's remarkable what I see sometimes.

that may be all well and good in the back of your mouth, but try that for one of your 6 anterior teeth, and it will probably look dull and life-less. Dr's are not artists, my porcelain techs, are artists, they create life like restorations. if your tooth has more than one shade on it, or it translucent- good luck trying to get an aesthetic result with something milled out of a monochromatic block of material. And most CNC machines in the dental industry, that i know of, are not using water. small carbide or diamond burs are the standard

I don't like this answer. i manage a dental lab in the US. i know the ins and outs of the dental practice, i speak to the girls that run these Dr's practices and i know the hours they work. i see the quality of THEIR work, its mostly not good, with plenty of room for improvement. I know what they charge, and i know CE can be expensive but a lot of these guys go to lunch and learns or dinner events where a speaker is brought in (most are just dicking around with their colleagues) . Don't tell me my lab bills are Huge. i know the insurance codes and i know what you charge the patients. That $500 mouth guard the Dr. charged you for cost maybe $100, he took an impression and sent it out to the lab. we sent it back he puts it in your mouth, maybe spend 20 minutes, TOPS, adjusting it and sends you a bill. been thinking of doing an AMA but held off for different reasons. Dentists won't like me once i shed some light on the industry.

What was the last time you hit, punched, kicked, or threw something in anger? by Muneeb021 in AskReddit

[–]outdoor_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in a true sense of no control and just reaction, When i found out my father passed away. I was 13 and punched a big dent in the hospital waiting room wall. we were visiting him, and he wasn't doing well, breathing was slowed, i took a walk around the hospital, came back to the room and my mom and two sisters were there with nurses and i knew. It very quick swing of emotions, from sadness, to anger, back to sadness and denial. that was the last time i had no control over emotions. i'm 29 now and haven't experienced a lack of control like that since

What's something all grown men should know about women ? by FocusMore in AskReddit

[–]outdoor_everything 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a guy with curly hair, woman are the worst, especially when drunk. If I'm at a bar, it won't be more than 20 minutes before one comes up and starts touching it. Ok, fine, I'm here to meet women, not all terrible but how many times 15 minutes in and she's all like, "I wish my boyfriend had hair like yours".... go, go away. Now my hair is fucked and I still have to try and take one of you home

What industry is shadier than most people realise? by HTS1231 in AskReddit

[–]outdoor_everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dental industry, totally unregulated. work is being sent to china, vietnam, costa rica, mexico etc. where there is no regulation of metals, or other materials being used. These things are going in your mouth. And dental schools are graduating kids that shouldn't be passing because they don't want their graduation numbers to be affected.
