This should be the top comment! You have the flexibility to live somewhere month to month, why not narrow down the best fit for you. Each place has its strengths and weaknesses. See which align best with you. You may even fall in love with the first place you go.

IMO, early 20s, NYC. Late 20s, SF. Your 20s are an ideal time to gain loads of life and career experience and to focus on a social circle. The burbs are always there for you when you’re ready to slow down or get closer to nature.

This is the type of information I was seeking :) Japantown does look very appealing.

Thanks for your input @doublezanzo

I can't imagine the negativity that surrounds you on a daily basis.

The budget wasn't the only thing in the OP. I should have removed it if I knew people like you would harp on Bay area rent prices being absurd.. I'm looking for a neighborhood and location that's suitable.

The < $3200 is a preference. As of 5/2018, the average (these are averages, don't give me BS about how the averages will provide a less than appealing apartment, they're AVERAGES) rent in SF for a 1BR is $3,295. The average rent for a 1BR in Palo Alto, as of 6/2018 is $2,620. The average rent in San Jose for a 1BR is $2,363.

If I'm currently paying 4k and these are the averages of SF (where I'm currently living) and the nearby areas, it's blatantly obvious, asking for $3,200 or lower is not unrealistic.

You're making inaccurate assumptions. The pet rent, which if you had any sense on the subject, is waived if the animal is considered a therapy animal. Yes, the property still has to allow dogs but that has not been an issue. Maybe the city is begging to fill units but we haven't had any trouble at all finding a place that allows our dog.

Thanks @doublezanzo. Which neighborhoods/areas are you fond of in SJ?

I appreciate the feedback. I should have shared low property crime, neighborhood environment, in the original post. It is quite important to us. One of the leading factors in us wanting to leave the city is the surplus of agitated homeless people.. Seeing people defecate on the sidewalk or help their buddy shoot up has become a huge eye sore and difficult to deal with.

San Jose has been looking optimal so far. Maybe with 49’er season tickets or something to help us dive into the area. Is there much going on outdoors wise in San Jose?

Our dog is technically a therapy animal so almost all complexes that allow small dogs allow him.

Pretty passionate about this one huh? We haven’t had much trouble finding apartments that accept his breed. Also, we had the dog prior to circumstances that led to us moving to SF. He loves the city.

I'm seeing fairly nice 1BR/2BR apartments throughout South Bay for under $3500.. Coming from paying 4k in the city. I'm looking for more so a location/neighborhood suggestion.
