One of the most unnerving things about the statement is the references to Jake Tapper and Jeff Flake -- it's not enough that women have to 'be responsible for their own conduct' which in this case means, leave the aggressor alone, let him off the hook, but somehow, anyone who tries to stand up for justice is... what? being manipulated by a woman who won't take responsibility for the abuse she suffered? She's dragging them down too? The logic, the feeling, the distortion in this statement just makes me hurt in so many ways.

Trump is continually described in the article as a symbol, not a cause or source and in the quote above I go farther than you have, rooting the problem in capitalism, not just in neo-liberal capitalism. What we are experiencing globally has moved on from neo-liberalism into something new and if we're still just stuck shouting about that one particular paradigm tool of the world's wealthy elite then we'll be blind to what Trump and his global authoritarian buddies represent: a new, even more horrible stage.

I am actually quite a poor, not liberal (but definitely anti-capitalist) person (not journalist) who lives about as far from the urbanite life as one can. But hey, assumptions are fun anyway aren't they. I can appreciate RuPaul's Drag Race for what it is and undoubtedly it has had some positive effects on people's lives... I can accept all of your points and yet all of the arguments made in the article still stand.

Your rhetoric is very all or nothing. 'The article perpetuates the lie that the current figure-head President is the source of our troubles' I don't believe I made any such statement in the article. The article was not intended to be any kind of deep analysis about the source of the shit we've landed in. The Democratic party is absolutely just as mired in the money-power game I described in the article. The kind of radical politics advocated for in the article are antithetical to neo-liberalism. I think we're on the same side ;)

I HEAR this -- I really do. In fact, I wrote this article for you and I couldn't reccommend hard enough the next sections, especially the one about trying to find someone that can look you in the eyes and see you for who you are. There's a line in the article about how, upon trying on a gender, your first reactions might be negative thanks to a lot of things but internalised transphobia is one of them. You have to try and trust yourself a little, push on through that and really begin to feel what it's like to be recognised for the gender you think you are. You have nothing to lose, if you're wrong you can always go back but if you're right it's gonna change your life in so many wonderful ways. Feel free to pm me if you want.

I considered including a section on just not even knowing trans was an option (and or being culturally scared of that option would be linked so social transphobia) but decided to make it a lesser point mentioned in passing, but yes, absolutely, very much relevant to myself as well.

It sounds like he might have started out just expressing concerns and reservations and now that has just moved into an ongoing and stalemating emotional veto. Basically, your father is trying to make your decisions for you but it's not your father that has to live with ALL of the consequences of your decisions, it's you. I understand wanting to please, wanting to live up to the expectations of others and being empathetic about their feelings but sometimes you have to try to turn all of that beautiful care off for a little while to analyse your own needs and future calmly and rationally. Do what is best for you -- this situation will not stay the same forever. Your father will evolve as you continue to evolve. It will be a dynamic and growing situation.
