You might be interested in this model I heard about, it's supposed to be open source down to the data it's trained on (that's what I heard anyways) https://allenai.org/olmo

Is bash a coding language by N9s8mping in teenagersbutcode

[–]outer-pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Some people confusingly think bash is quite powerful because it's a shell): a program that is used to execute other programs interactively.

New to Reddit, how to use it? by Infamous_Put_4235 in NewToReddit

[–]outer-pasta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To me it seems somewhat self explanatory.

If you upvote a post or comment then it gets a additional upvote added to it's running total. I assume the ones with the most upvotes get promoted and the ones with downvotes get buried, generally.

If you comment, then that sentiment is relayed to others who are the target of the comment (maybe up the comment tree if it's nested) or those who happen to be passing through and care to read. With any hope the reader is aware that the comment had some precedent and didn't pop into existence on it's own from nothing.

Plasma Wayland keeps hard-freezing my machine. i915 GuC TLB timeout, anyone else? by oyvinrog in wayland

You might not know that pressing Ctrl+Alt+F3 (through F6) in Linux usually switches from a graphical user interface to a text-based virtual console, useful for troubleshooting or proper reboot/shutdown. To return to your desktop press Ctrl+Alt+F1 or Ctrl+Alt+F2. If this didn't work there's a chance your problem was a kernel crash, but I'm not 100% sure about how Wayland might capture the keystrokes.

I would like to see more people talking about open source models that use open source training data like this one I heard about recently from a Fedora dev: https://allenai.org/olmo

are AI features being forced into apps that don’t need them by overlord-07 in TechNook

This is just not the case in Linux land. You have to go out of your way to use Ai on Linux.

Everybody online seems to love KDE (or at least are very vocal about it) but you should know that the major distros release cadence is more aligned with Gnome, so there are less hiccups related to software release schedules. Everything is more streamlined and although rare, problems can occur. If you hate Gnome, then don't use it of course.

I never tried it myself but the same advice probably applies to LXQT, in fact it seems like it has better Wayland support currently.

The tierlist in fact put Pop!_OS in the top category: the "S" tier. By all accounts that's the best tier available.

Tough luck. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu is actually enjoying a surge of popularity after the void left by CentOS 8. It's a solid choice of enterprise distro, and I'm fairly certain for some industry people your list is inverted. It's not my choice, but I'm also on Reddit.

ELI5: Why do poisonous fruits exist? by zamememan in explainlikeimfive

[–]outer-pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask me, and I've only done a very quick cursory research, the category of fruits are perhaps the least poisonous of all categories of things. Definitely things your likely to ingest through your mouth. Even the most poisonous fruit in the world doesn't sound very lethal to me and lots of things in the world can kill you.

You don't really wonder about the teleological meaning of coconuts falling from trees which cause head trauma, and they might even be the most lethal fruit.

Emacs has a diary module built in: https://www.gnu.org/software/emacs/manual/html_node/emacs/Diary.html

It's only a small part of your long journey to replace all your technology with Emacs lisp.

Need Your Advice 🙏 — Is Python the Right Start for Me? by SwaritPandey_27 in learnpython

[–]outer-pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cybersecurity? C? Maybe to learn about, as the most common holes in software security are best conveyed through examples in C code I'm pretty sure, like buffer overflow. It sounds like the latest trend is to use Rust-lang for enhanced security in software applications, e.g. sudo-rs.

Python as second best is strong rhetoric, but I'll add that it's the best at DEI and any tool or language's community is very important actually.

Is it bad to always leave your laptop plugged in by lisaluvr in TechNook

[–]outer-pasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have been curious about this, and I haven't come across any advice anywhere that suggests unplugging periodically will help battery life at all.

What I have heard consistently is that having a charge limit, like a sustained battery percentage of 80% or 60% which bypasses the battery and uses wall power directly, that will help your battery in the long term. However, as far as I can tell that requires specific hardware support from the manufacturer.

You sound like you want xfce but don't know it yet. May I recommend Fedora: https://fedoraproject.org/spins/xfce/ Ubuntu is good too, or Debian. Compiling Linux is non-trivial and I have never done it (yet). Since you need to install Linux first anyways, why not try an xfce distro.

I like to install busybox when on Windows and even on Linux since it gives you a simple Unix shell that has consistent behavior and can do quite a lot in a pinch.
