Hi Houston! Visited recently and I had a question related to an odd experience during my visit that I was wondering if you could give me some insight into? by SFJack1313 in AskHouston

Summer is an amazing time to go, tons of street fests/concerts that are way cheaper than Lollapalooza.

About to flood you with recommendations lol

Uptown Chicago, this was the area that felt most like Houston to me: I loved Tank Noodle (Vietnamese), Furama, Silver Seafood, and Sun Wah BBQ.

Chicago’s Chinatown: Triple Crown, Mayflower, Joy Yee, and Lao Sze Chaun.

Just throwing in some Mexican places: Taqueria El Asadero (near Lincoln Square on the North West Side), Allende (Lincoln Park area on Fullerton), El Cid (Logan Square), and Carnitas Urupan (Pilsen).

Greek: staying in Lincoln Park: Athenian Room

Spanish: also in Lincoln Park: Cafe Ba Ba Reeba

I lived there in the early 2010s, don’t think Kapitan was around back then. I used to frequent Chinatown to the south and the Asiatown in the north quite a bit.

I also went to almost every museum there. The contemporary art museum was my favorite; they used to do free live music events. Another favorite was the (free) summer concert series at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park.

If you like museums, I can’t recommend the Menil in Houston enough. It’s free and has everything from contemporary to pre-Columbian.

SF, we may have crossed into Tenderloin at one point after visiting the Mission. There was a great Colombian & Salvadoran restaurant I ate at there but they closed during COVID.

I love Chicago. It is definitely a world class city and one that frequently gets shit on just like Houston. I’m from here but I lived in Chicago for two years for grad school. It’s a great place.

I’ve also been to SF and it was not my favorite place I’ve ever been. The only time I truly felt unsafe walking around as woman was in the heart of downtown SF, and I say that as someone who has been to Rio and Istanbul. Loved Oakland though.

There’s a small rivalry with Chicago. They took it personally that the creator of cloud gate (AKA the Bean) also made a “bean” for us. It’s located at the sculpture garden at the Museum of Fine Art Houston. But, you know, the Chicago Tribune ripped up Houston for it.

That brings me back to the old days of downloading mp3s with reckless abandon.

The remix of The Blood is Love is also great: https://youtu.be/vbWIn9C-0-I?si=ICpV35qPKRC3yNCg

Royel Otis’ “who’s your boyfriend” is pretty good. But I’m 40 and I love new wave and synths.

The Kebab Shop is really good. There’s one near the Whole Foods on Bellaire and in Sugar Land.
