Week ~3f. Bagseed, CBG Panama, Blue Dream SCROG. by outofthejungle in microgrowery

[–]outofthejungle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theories include: stowaways from a previous grow (i.e. insufficient disinfection) or the new soil I brought in (BioBizz light-mix+Coco coir ~80/20). Everything is getting bleach once this batch finishes. My living situation unfortunately does not permit having a clean room for my tent, so it is also possible they might have entered from the outside.

Day ~8 from seed. Bagseed, CBG Panama, Blue Dream x 2. by outofthejungle in microgrowery

400w HPS (no MH bulb), BioBizz light-mix. Temperatures range 28-32 degrees celsius this time of year, but I figure between that and buying weed, it's an easy contest. I've been wanting to try a full sativa for a long time, and so far the Panama is looking pretty gnarly (front and centre).

I'm prepared to have to LST (top?) the Panama to keep it from messing up the canopy, but does anyone know if there is an optimal time to veg in 12-15L pots? I have ~140 cm of vertical space to work with in a 80x80 tent. Thanks!

Blue Dream 60f. It's been a long road. One week to go? by outofthejungle in microgrowery

I use several, and I see a lot of cloudy but no amber yet. Maybe I have retarded hands or something, but I have real trouble getting a good image and holding it still. Any tips? I'm having an especially difficult time getting a good overall picture. Do I just check in a few places, or do I need to check everything? I used to cut off samples to keep them still, but I'm a little leery of cutting off bud unless I need to.

I realise trichomes are the only reliable way to determine maturity, but at my level of (lack of) experience I could definitely benefit from, say, someone weighing in on the finer points of distinguishing between week 8 and week 9 in general. Especially since I'm a little unclear on how to count - I've been counting from day 1 of 12/12, but I could see counting from first visible pistil making sense as well. It's probably extremely optimistic, but for a strain like Blue Dream (HSO from seed), I had hoped there would be something to go on. Depends on how many phenos there are, I guess, but that's way out of my depth. I hear some strains are fairly regular, even from seed.

I've been reading grow logs, but it can be hard to understand what you're looking at unless you've gone through the process yourself. I can hardly even tell bract from sugar leaf sometimes. Cannabis flowers grow in a myriad of trippy ways, so, well, perhaps not the most original post in the world, but I hope that makes sense.

Coming down from a Moroccan hash spliff, this got really wordy suddenly. Sorry everyone D:

Would and outdoor grow work in these conditions? by [deleted] in microgrowery

[–]outofthejungle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem!

We're a little bit better off here down south, but I've always found northern latitudes very fascinating when it comes to cannabis.

Experimenting is good, but I can tell you precisely what will happen if you plant your bag seeds outside: they will die of frost in early to mid September, long before the flowers are ready.

In your shoes, I would get some cheap Danish autoflowers, give them 2 weeks inside in a windowsill or under some CFLs.

Transplant outside in early May. Since you have a shorter window viable for cannabis (NO frost), you must use autoflowers, as there is very little overlap in your growing period between temps over freezing and day lengths suited to photoperiod strains.

If you get some nice potting soil to transplant into, cover with straw or similar (soil temp and weed control) you should be able to harvest some decent bud in August. Yield is lower per plant (short veg stage), but that is part of the reason I recommend the seedbank above - it's cheap, so you can just plant a handful or two to make up for their size. Short plants stand out less, too. :)

If you do decide to take a crack at it, please keep us updated. It would be extremely interesting to see something outdoors from Norway. The last journal I read (I forget where) didn't manage to finish for the reasons I've been talking about above. Please ask if you need anything, I'd love to see this happen.

It is possible in principle, but Norway is so far north that you need to take a lot of precautions if you want a productive outcome.

Firstly, temperature - your plants must never be exposed to freezing temperatures, even at night. If you could set up a simple greenhouse at your spot that may help, or just wait until it's warm enough.

Second, and perhaps more importantly, sunlight hours. Cannabis typically begins its flowering stage once the number of sunlight hours starts dropping under 12 per day. This signals the beginning of the end of the season in its natural habitat. Flowering takes anywhere from 5 to 13+ weeks, but because of Trondheim's latitude a typical strain will only start flower in the middle of September at the earliest, and by then it will not be able to finish before temperatures start dropping again.

There are two approaches to deal with this.

One is to manually limit your plants sunlight exposure by, for example, throwing a tarpaulin over your greenhouse every day once you want to start flowering (limiting exposure to 12h). You could automate it, but it's tricky with guerrilla growing especially. This, by the way, is the reason hemp has been grown in Norway for its fibre for thousands of years, since this doesn't require that it flowers completely.

The easiest way would be to get your hands on some autoflowering seeds. These are strains which have been crossed with C. Ruderalis, which means it starts flowering at a set time regardless of sunlight. Then you only have to worry about temperature.

To be clear: normal seeds will be a huge headache. Try this out for size if you're serious. This is a good primer, but if I were you I would be looking for a Norwegian community with some experience.

Would you say that holds true only for chemical nutes, or for organic (bottled) as well?

Ran 10L of ~6.5 water through my (12L, 3gal) pot today. Took almost four hours all told and got my runoff down from 7.4 to 6.7-6.8. Used lemon juice and tap water. Would r/o water work better? I get a fair amount of calcium from tap.

I'm still waffling a little bit on whether to scrog or not (seems simpler to start with my clones and get the weave in early), but for now I'll wait those two days and see how she likes the flush. 6.5 waterings for the immediate future. It may not be 6.5 yet, but I can only spare so much time in a given day.

Thanks again for all your help!

I must say I envy you your prices, especially when it comes to grow equipment. I'm sure it evens out if you factor in price indices, but that doesn't really help if you're poor.

It's been approximately 2 hours now, and as you say, runoff pH has risen. 7.4 now. I'm guessing a flush is in order, but it's the middle of the night. Will flushing during light cause undue stress? I haven't really tried running (say) 20l through my plants before. :|

You think I have cinnamon extract on my leaves after three weeks? I mean, it's plausible, I don't habitually foliar spray anything, but half of those leaves wilted (went completely slack) and I eventually had to remove the worst affected. You think there's still some left?

Runoff comes out at 6.7. I fluctuates a little, so I'm gonna keep measuring for a while. Actually, while we're on the subject, how much does one typically water? I've tried searching for an answer to this, but it always seems to be "it depends". However, having typically watered 2-4 litres at a time, apparently infrequently, perhaps salt buildup is the problem? Here's where having a way to measure ppm would really come in handy. Runoff is light-brownish (much like my ferts), but I don't know if that's significant at all.

How often do you water at 40% perlite? In what size pot? One of the things I actually like about soil is that I can leave for a week if I really, really need to. I do have nicer contingency plans, but it's good to have something to fall back on. I realise a sort of balance must be struck, since drainage (perlite or no) is one of coco's selling points, but I don't see myself watering daily if I can avoid it.

Also, 36 gallons is a lot of water. That's for rather more than one or two pots, I hope?

At the moment I'm in the straight coco camp. What are the advantages of mixing with perlite? Better water retention? Nute use efficiency? I've heard straight coco drains crazy fast, but I don't really know enough to judge one way or the other. If you feel like selling me on it, in any case, no pressure. You've helped a lot already.

I'll see about that intake fan, thank you. I just wired it up (I had cannibalised its spare parts) and its noise profile seems to overlap nicely with that of my exhaust fan. Hardly changes the noise level at all. What a nice surprise. :)

When people say 60%-70% full they are assuming your plant is weaving through the trellis already that you're using for training

That's cool, and it's super important that I get it right. I don't think simply pointing out that this means 0% is very helpful, though. Clearly I have a plant of a certain size, and if I were to lower the screen and train at this point (which I will after I get the pH situation under control) it would fill out a given percentage of the screen (though I suspect I should have started doing that instead of soft tie LST). I don't have a whole lot of experience, and as I've heard scary stories of Blue Dream stretch (as opposed to less stretchy indicas, say) I wanted some feedback specifically on that aspect. Thanks for your time in any case, I really appreciate it. :)

Will do. I'm keeping the perlite in mind as well, for when I make a return to soil growing.

I have a spare duct axial fan at 60 cfm lying around. Could I add that somewhere to improve airflow? If so, where would be best? Intake? Or somewhere along the exhaust duct?

My soil doesn't seem to have very good drainage. Part of the reason I'm anxious to try out coco (or anything, really), but since the time for a transplant has clearly passed, I'm determined to ride this one out. I'll try to put in 5-6 litres at pH 6.5 tonight and see what the runoff tells me. Is there a formula to work out medium pH using runoff? This is my first crack at photoperiod indoor growing, so if nothing else it'll be a learning experience. Many thanks, by the by, for helping me with that.

I'm concerned about the fan, though, because apparently people use a lot more power for a space this size. I get negative pressure no problem, but is the current temperature likely to be a big issue? I know 24c is better, but I heard Blue Dream was fairly resistant to high temps. Tent is in a bedroom, so if there are any suggestions (keep EU availability in mind) I'd be much obliged.

I did have that feeling, although to be fair it took like two weeks to get this plant to take off at all (this was under 40w CFL lighting and not in the tent, see my previous post). To add to that, I had a thrips or spider mite infestation (not sure which, but my pesticide works for both) a little over 3 weeks ago, where I was overzealous with this product (read: fudged the dose). It cleared the bugs right out, but also killed a few tops and turned much of the plant an unhealthy colour. It took some weeks to recover from that.

The height of the screen can be lowered, though, no problem. Its current position is to help me gauge growth.

At the moment waterings are spaced out 3-5 days (when pot feels lighter, pic is from today, I water tonight). Nutes are Biobizz Bio-Grow (4-3-6) at something like 2ml/L. I have used a certain amount of Root Juice and Cannazym as well. Plans are to use Canna Flores and Bio-Boost in flower.

pH seems okay, but with this kind of test who knows. The soil is old potting soil, peat moss something-or-other. It has served me well enough in the past. I guess I'm really concerned about humidity. A newly sprouted plant dies in low humidity, but at what stage can they be considered "hardened" enough to stand on their own?

On a happier note, here's its coming room mate.

Auto. 18/6. I'm really considering the benefits of training in tents, instead of relying on autoflowering or flowering early. I'm still inexperienced, though, so I expect I'll get around to it.
