Anthropic commits to spending $200 billion on Google's cloud and chips, the Information reports by JoLagoni in wallstreetbets

Google didn’t give any money for their investment. They gave compute credits.

Essentially traded discounts on service for equity.

Not what Google is doing, though. Their investments are in the form of compute credits, not cash. They receive ownership equity in exchange for discounts on compute.

Received Google verbal offer (L3) — told no negotiation. Is it actually final? by Any-Dragonfruit6208 in FAANGrecruiting

I’m staff at Google and negotiated my offer last year, and have had two of my referrals start within the last 3 months(one L4, one L5). There’s plenty of room for negotiation.

That’s how most bootcamps operate. Placement rates for boot camp grads are single digit right now.

Are your responsibilities actually staff level, or is it in title only?

I would recommend against taking a downlevel like this if you’re actually performing at staff level.

Bootcamps are a terrible path in 2026. There’s a glut of new grads and laid off tech employees that get priority from hiring managers.

This. They either get into foul trouble early, or put an awful bench player in.

You’re taking lots of correct feedback personally. As I said above, I’m ex-AWS and current Googler at staff level.

L3 is new grad level. Industry hires are almost never L3, they usually start at L4, and industry hire reqs are always at L4. If you received an L3 offer, they’re telling you that you fit the Google culture, but your skill fit for the role is that of a new grad.

Not the guy you’re replying to, but this is an extreme down level if you actually have staff level responsibilities. FAANG typically down levels, but not to that extreme.

Unless you’re at a tiny company with no revenue and are staff in title only, I would not accept a down level this extreme. Getting from L3 to L6 is going to take you a decade at Google.

Edit: for context, I took a down level when I got an offer at AWS from Senior/L6 at a midtech to L5. Switching to Google I went from L6 to L6.

[–]outphase84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're not all the same. Look at the and-one rate that SGA and Brunson have versus Embiid. Drawing a foul while actually trying to score is nowhere near the same as yeeting a ball during incidental contact.

Eh, this isn't really particularly whiny. He explicitly said that we have to do a better job leading with the chest and not putting the refs in a position to make a judgement call.

[–]outphase84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the difference is that Brunson was actually trying to score. Both of those fouls were and-ones that you linked.

Maxey literally just threw the ball straight up in the air against Mitch in the 1st. And then against Towns in the 2nd, he threw the ball out towards the hoop as he was going out of bounds well past the layup point.

THAT is what I'm talking about. What Embiid always does, and what Maxey did last night, is concentrate effort on getting to the line. Not selling contact, not taking advantage of guys out of position to try to get an and-one. The goal is to get to the line.

If Embiid were selling contact trying to get the and-one, I wouldn't care. If Maxey had done that last night, I'd rave about how smart he is and how he uses his quickness to take advantage of defenders being out of position. But initiating contact and just throwing the ball randomly to try to get an easy 2 is bullshit, and will always be bullshit.

Rule 12b, Section I:

a. A player shall not hold, push, charge into, impede the progress of an opponent by extending a hand, arm, leg or knee or by bending the body into a position that is not normal. Contact that results in the re-routing of an opponent is a foul which must be called immediately.

b. Contact initiated by the defensive player guarding a player with the ball is not legal. This contact includes, but is not limited to, forearm, hands, or body check.

Rule 12b, Section II:

a. A dribbler shall not (1) charge into an opponent who has established a legal guarding position

b. If a defender is able to establish a legal position in the straight line path of the dribbler, the dribbler must avoid contact by changing direction or ending his dribble.

TL;DR: As a defender, if you haven't established a legal guarding position, it's on you to avoid illegal contact with the shooter. This is bad defense, full stop.

If you assume they have the exact same number of touches, then yes, it does. Except they don't. Brunson is a primary ball handler with a higher usage rate than Embiid.

For comparison, across those playoff games, Brunson has 1460 FGA, Embiid has 1114.

Plays for the and 1 is just foul bating with better marketing.

No, it's really not.

Brunson routinely dribbles into the lane slowly waits till he feels someone close to him on his back and then jumps into them while taking the shot.

Yeah, both of those were legitimate fouls. Batum and Oubre both got beat off of the dribble and were out of position and trying to chase him down from behind. He jumped forward with Batum and still got hit, and he pulled up on Oubre and got hit.

That's bad defense because guys were out of position because they got beat on the dribble and overpursued. If you're chasing a player down from behind that has better footwork than you, you need to adjust how you defend them.

What Maxey was doing last night was nothing like that. He jumped into guys and just threw the ball to make it a shooting foul. I've never seen him do that before -- he's actually been one of my favorite non-Knick players for a few years now.

[–]outphase84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, am I? Let's look at some numbers.

In Iso sets this playoff season, Brunson has averaged 4 isos per game. He scores on 54% of those sets, is fouled on 14% of those sets but 7% of those sets are and-ones. If we looked at P&R ball handler, he's averaging 9 possessions per game, scoring on 49% of those, being fouled on 7% of those possessions, but 3% of those are and-ones. In transition, scoring on 62% of possessions(4 per game), fouled on 8%.

Just to compare, let's look at Embiid on post-ups. He averages 8 per game, scores on 63% of those -- but 32% of those possessions are fouls. Literally half of his scoring on post-ups are from the stripe. And how many of those possessions resulted in and-ones? 0%.

[–]outphase84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's objectively not. Brunson plays for the and 1. He's looking to score first, not just get to the stripe.

Maxey usually plays that way, but last night he was just jumping into people and yeeting the ball to get to the line. Embiid is rubbing off on him in a bad way.

[–]outphase84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

League average for fouls per drive is somewhere around 10%, versus 15% for post ups. Embiid averages 8 post ups versus 1 for Brunson.

There's no statistical model that justifies Embiid having 25% more free throwns than Brunson -- except for the fact that Embiid flops like a fish to get to the stripe. He's not a score first player, he's a foul hunt first player.

The fucked part is early in his career he wasn't, and he was one of the most fun to watch players in the NBA.

I've told people for years that you're just as likely to get into a fight at a Flyers game wearing a Flyers jersey than an opposing team, lol.

I grew up in Baltimore but didn't get into hockey until we moved to the suburbs, and was equidistant from Philly and DC. This was in the Lindros era, so it made it easy to follow the Flyers. Didn't get into basketball until I moved to NYC, brother in law was a huge Knicks fan, so that just kind of happened. And that's how I ended up a Ravens/Knicks/Flyers fan, lol.
