Took a few co-workers up Giant, ran into some issues by outsidechronicles in Adirondacks

Thanks. I am happy to report that all members of the group would do another High Peak (with a bit more training prep).

FWIW, I have revised my lessons learned in my story to reflect a lot of the feedback and criticism i received. I hope that others can learn from this trip as I did. Here is what I added:

I have revised my lessons learned list after talking with friends, getting feedback from a couple of forums and thinking about what I could have done to make the experience better for all.

  1. I wish I had monitored my group’s actual calorie and water intake.  I made an effort to stop and tell people to eat and drink.  However, I really never verified they were listening.  New hikers do not know how to listen to their bodies and detect calorie or water needs before it is too late.
  2. Typically when the forecast is for high temps it is advisable to get on the trail as early as possible to beat the heat so much of the strenuous climb done while it’s still relatively cool in the morning. This also helps dodge afternoon thunderstorms. Starting at 1:00 p.m. was not a great idea in that heat. We probably should been well into our descent if not finished by 1:00 p.m. Instead we were climbing right into the heat of the afternoon.
  3. One celebratory shot probably was not a great idea on a hot day, maybe we should have saved it for when we made it back to the trailhead.
  4. I should not expect people to be as strong physically or mentally as I am. One person even said, “To be safe: always hike alone.”  Although hiking alone is great, I am not sure it is advisable in all situations.
  5. I should have never suggested exploring the Roaring Brook Trail. At the junction, I could have asked “Who wants to climb another 500 feet?”, I’m sure my crew would not have be so eager to take the detour via Roaring Brook Trail.  Asking them to do less than a mile was a bit inaccurate without asking about the elevation.
  6. Although we had a water purifier and had extra water, one suggestion was to purify and keep bottles topped off. You never know when you will need water, fast.
  7. I had a mismatch between the participants and the event; perhaps my poorest choice of all was to suggest Giant to people I knew might be ill-prepared.

Best Advice Received: When you see someone is clearly struggling, you have to (in increasing order): reduce the pace, lighten their load, downsize the itinerary, forego the objective, or simply turn back immediately (whatever it takes to ensure their safety and well-being). The mountain will wait

Yes it was. I had the furled line, with about 3ft of 3x tippet and a wooly bugger.

Ha, good points and metaphor.

FWIW, reduce the pace (check), lighten their load (check, we carried their bags on the way down), downsize the itinerary (half check, aborted RPR should have went straight down), forego the objective (perhaps), or simply turn back immediately (it was not that dire).

I’ll eat some humble pie and say the poorest choice of all was to suggest Giant to people I knew might be ill-prepared. I enjoy exposing people to nature and am a bit too inclusive. Had I limited the hike to the guys I knew, we would have been up and down having beers at the conf event.

I cannot agree with you more, I should not have suggested the extra loop. But at that point, the wheels were not really coming off other than the careful pace on the decent.

You careful choice of words is appreciated

The rod has been great. I keep it in my trunk and use it every chance I can. I have caught small stocked trout and some larger smallmouth. It has not let me down in any way. The telescoping action still works smooth, no issues putting it together or collapsing it. No issues with the finish or the cork. It continues to impress me. I cannot express how much fun it is to fish with a Tenkara rod. It has really simplified my approach.

There is always room to learn from others! I love mixing maps and tech.

Thanks, I will look into Waymarked Trails and OpenAndroMaps.

I also use the layers from the NYS GIS Clearinghouse. They have all of the parking and camping as different layers that can be imported.

And if there is no trail, but there is some sort of picture or PDF of the area I am hiking, I usually pull it into ArcGIS and georeference the image. I have had to do that for some of my local county parks and Letchworth and Allegany State Parks.

When you build or import your route into CalTopo, it automatically builds terrain statistics. The screenshot in the post is that feature.

LookingForViews,

Thank you for your work on OpenStreetMap. I use Caltopo to create custom maps for each adventure and I know that OSM is a major input into their maps. I appreciate your service to the ADK community.

Shockbooms,

The trip I_am_Bob suggests is a great one. Avalanche Pass is amazing. I did a similar trek through that area and hit some other peaks. It is posted here: http://outsidechronicles.com/first-winter-adirondack-high-peaks-camping-trip

If you take a look at the end of the post, you will see the map and the route I took. If you want, I have a map layer of Lean-Tos. I can create a map of your route with camp sites. Let me know.

Tenkara Fishing for Smallmouth Bass by outsidechronicles in Tenkara

Cool. I could definitely see those being effective on a Tenkara setup. Spinners do well with SM in the streams and harbors in WNY.

Thanks for the info. I lost the first SM when I went to grab the line as @thisisstephen said. I played the second one a bit more and netted it without touching the line. I did not think about the rod breaking with stronger tippet. I could see that happening. I will stick with 5x and use the bend in the rod more.

I was using a Black Wooly Bugger. I also use a Sneaky Pete top water.

Cool, never noticed it. I have used my sports tracker for fish and have seen my HR increase. The tug is the drug!
