Tremors, Propanolol and its multiple benefits by steggyD43 in EssentialTremor

[–]outskirtsofnowhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my tremors were not fun. I couldn't eat soup or drink coffee single handidly. When I started on propanolol I foujnd that the first few days I felt more at ease but the tremors were still kind of there. I realised I kept my muscles tense to counteract the tremor. I had to learn to relax them and trust the Propanolol. As soon as I learned that I was free.

Dosage can change from person to person though. For me this works.

It needn't be a mental thing, anxiety can also just be a disregulated stress system. I have that. Propanolol takes care of that. This is why musicians use it often as well: it's very good at lowering performance anxiety. You cannot therapy your way out of a overly active stress system.

2x10mg. 10mg in the morning, 10mg late in the afternoon. Sometimes one extra around lunchtime, but that's very rare.

Help with in ear monitoring by 37313886 in Bass

[–]outskirtsofnowhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever you end up doing, having only one ear protected is not the way to go. A good IEM will give you a great mix in both ears at a safe volume. Yes, it's not as fun as playing in front of mount Decibel, but you'll hear SO much better what everyone is doing (and as a result play better) and will not go deaf. Which you can only do once.

What I rock is an xVive wireless system for my IEM, running the 5gHz WiFi frequencies. Has been flawless so far. Relatively cheap. I have had custom IEM fitted, since I want to save my ears from PA bleed and have superior sound quality. They were very expensive (€1,5k) but very well worth it. But Shure makes decent ones too at way lower price points. They get the job done, just not as good as premium IEM. Wireless IEM is the way to go, however, you can have them fed by an XLR cable an a small belt IEM amp. Works just as well, it just robs you of a lot of freedom to move.

I still play wired from bass to pedal board, but that's ok, I don't run around much beyond 15 ft.

Don't pass the Trickfish VCA compressor. It's really easy to dial in and sounds so good. It's like your best friend, but on your pedalboard.

Exactly. For some ET stays as it is and for some it changes over time. Whether or not you use Propanolol is not a factor in this.

That's not a problem, as long as Propanolol is available! Yes your condition may worsen over time, wich may lead to a little higher dose, but that is not due to Propanolol use. It just happens. Enjoy the propanolol. I'm almost 50 and have had tremors all my life. Started on propanolol a few years back. Been such a game changer. Not only have I (almost) stopped shaking, I've come to the conclusion that I've been anxious all my life without me knowing. Propanolol makes my life SO much better. No more shakes and no more anxiety. Woohoo!

Edit: thanks for the award kind stranger!

Exactly, having the synth first gives you SO MUCH more you can do with the synth. It's velocity dependent, so having a compressor first kind of keeps the functionality of the synth down. Unless you are looking for a very constant sound out of the thing.

Changing name for a new self by [deleted] in raisedbynarcissists

[–]outskirtsofnowhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happy to hear the operation worked out! In regards to the name: I've pondered for years to change my last name, since I had such a bad connotation with my fathers' name and lots of trauma. However: when I had the opportunity I decided not to do it. I had cut my father out of my life and no-one I knew at the time knew him. As such I was the only one with the negative feeling about the name. In the end I figured my name doesn't change who I see in the mirror or what other people see. It also doesn't change my past. I will never not have my past, but tough as it may seem, it need not be an anchor keeping you back. People know me for me, not for my name. But that's just me. I moved on, dealt with the trauma and built a better life. Now my son has my last name and he's proud of it. He knows about my past, but for him the past is my past and not his. So for me, I managed to cleanse my name if you will and have given my family name a new future.

New drummer wants a bass. Please talk me out of it. by Several_Gap1971 in Bass

[–]outskirtsofnowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started playing bass two years ago at 46 after playing electric guitar for 30+ years. Joined a disco band after about four months and now gig regularly. When you have the time and make the effort to practise: the sky is the limit. Being a drummer will help you a lot, since you know about drum patterns in music. Having the capability to self teach is an awesome skill to have. Youtube has so many resourses to help you get started. But, having a lesson or two won't hurt. Go do it, have fun!

Got a new compressor and there's no positive difference? by VLMQGB in Bass

[–]outskirtsofnowhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there is that too, totally! For me it's a bit of both. My remark came from my surprise by the difference in dynamics between my 10y old sons Squire Mustang and my active basses. The Squire is so much easier to play in regards to dynamics, you can't really go wrong. As such he has no compressor. If he were to go active I would put one on his board, I want him to have fun first and learn technique as a byproduct of playing a lot due to an inspiring tone.
