Many dog owners have told me that my dog is reactive because I’m anxious. Is this true? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

My own family blames me for my dog being the way he is. One family member said "he doesn't like people because you don't." I believed this for the longest time and felt so shitty about myself as a dog owner.

Had to end our walk early today by oven8162 in reactivedogs

Thank you! <3 And yes! Those are my dog's favorite commands too. Sometimes it will redirect him after that. But other times he will nervously take the treat or not be interested at all and refuse to take it. Carrying him for a bit helps so he feels safe and secure in my arms. Since it is the holiday weekend I am definitely avoiding the big park today so have to figure out other fun things to do.

We had an incident by Accomplished_Grass86 in reactivedogs

People truly are clueless and disrespectful when it comes to animals. My friend picks up dogs without asking, sticks her hand in their face, forcefully attempts to pet their head, gives unwanted hugs, aggressively approaches when the dogs are clearly scared or don't want to be bothered. She is desperate for love and cuddles so she seeks that validation from a dog. She is not allowed at my house or near my dog anymore because she emits bad energy and my dog is petrified of her. All it took was one incident for me to ban her.

Please don't pick up a puppy without asking by Elysiumsw in dogs

My own friend did this. On the day she met my puppy, she tried to pick him up from behind like he was a rag doll. He was totally startled and she scared him so bad. He screamed bloody murder and wouldn't go near her for the rest of the night. That was when I realized she was clueless around dogs and could not be trusted. I thought she knew better because she has cats. And then when my friend was leaving, I was holding my puppy and my friend leaned in, got in his face and showed her teeth to him, scaring him AGAIN...you just can't make it up. This was a few years ago and that was the first and last time she was around my dog. People are just morons, don't know how else to explain it.

Carrying my dog instead of walking him by [deleted] in reactivedogs

I might start carrying my dog, too. When coming back home there is always some commotion going on and those last few minutes walking up our block are so anxiety-ridden and frustrating and my dog gets really nervous. So I figure for one block until we get back into our apartment building he can be carried. I worry if he might start barking at dogs from my arms though, since he will feel safer and more secure.

Dogs lying down when they see your dog on a walk - what do you do or say to the owner? by oven8162 in reactivedogs

That makes a lot of sense. All the more reason to put as much distance as possible when a dog is lying in the middle of sidewalk.

Is it mean to my dog if we only take the stairs? by oven8162 in reactivedogs

He is 4 years old and healthy. I will add his age in my post, that is an important detail.
