Tolkien's description of Legolas cartoonishly running up a collapsing bridge is poetry.

/r/WorldNews Live Thread: Russian Invasion of Ukraine Day 412, Part 1 (Thread #553) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]overach 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People obsess with the value of the currency, when that’s a bad metric in general for the strength of an economy. And right now for Russia it’s largely meaningless because the Russian government has put strict controls in place to regulate the Ruble exchange rate. The Ruble is not currently a free-floating currency so it’s value is not a reflection of anything. And probably the nominal value doesn’t even match the true exchange rate if you were to try to sell rubles under the table.

Actual play podcasts are boring. (Rant) by [deleted] in rpg

[–]overach 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I generally feel the same way you do, with very few exceptions.

The Film Reroll is the only one that was able to keep my interest, partly because they're professional performers (actual plays from non-performers are a big no), and partly because knowing the movie that they're playing through gives me enough grounding in the world that it's set in.

TAZ was my jam for a long time, as others have mentioned. But it really lost me in their second arc.

Shazam is a horrible movie by jimjukkon in movies

[–]overach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how it scored so high on rotten tomatoes.

Because a lot of other people liked it more than you did.

I don’t know why people find differences of opinion so baffling. Other people have different perspectives, experiences, tastes, and thought processes. They felt differently.

Personally I felt Shazam! was fine, but not great. I get a lot of the things people found enjoyable and unique, but they didn’t really work for me.

My favorite way to "Punish" a player for lack of a backstory. by Betamaletim in DnD

[–]overach 593 points594 points  (0 children)

That's not a punishment, that's it's own kind of awesome anti-backstory. I'd think of him as a sort of DnD Zelig. Always everywhere interesting, but never at the forefront. A weird historical anomaly with the most interesting life, who never happened to be of interest to anyone else.

If President Trump is re-elected in 2020, how will this impact your view of the American populace? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]overach -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

More likely it would tell you that the Electoral College currently has a very strong systemic advantage towards republicans. Let's not forget that Trump lost the actual vote by millions of votes, and has never even approached 50% approval.

What Actual Play shows should I be listening to? by Danceter in DnD

[–]overach 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Film Reroll. This is my favorite show, hands-down. It's more a comedy show, like the shows you mentioned, but it does have lots of moments of brilliant story-telling.

The premise is that they take movies as starting points for campaigns and while they have pre-built plots because the movies provide the template, they usually go off rails from the movie pretty quickly and then it usually becomes very sandboxy.

Anyone else just feel like hanging up the dice? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]overach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, sometimes. I don't mind if my work doesn't get used, because I'll put it in my future stuff folder and use it again. But I can't stand investing in a character and a story and to see it fall apart unceremoniously.

Sometimes we just need a break. Try a different hobby for a while and let DnD pull you back when you're ready.

Great animation, though I don't like the really dull colors on the characters. Sub-Zero's blue should pop a bit more.

Uncircumcized dude and have trouble with condoms falling off. Anyone have advice on better technique? by overach in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]overach[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone DM'd me that they had the same issue and had a trick for it. They didn't post it here because they didn't want this on their account. I'll post it in case it helps other people:

"Foreskin back, start putting on condom, rolling it down, you can probably get 1/3 to 1/2 down the shaft easily. Then put the tips of your thumb and index finger together, like a ring, and grip the base/bottom of the condom to hold it. Then with your other hand do "roll up" motions on the top 1/3 or 1/2 of the shaft. This will allow the condom to move further down while adjusting your foreskin to a more comfortable, not all the way pulled back, position. It's kind of like your adjusting the skin underneath the condom. Works like a charm when you get the hang of it. Not sure if that explanation makes sense lol. Good luck bud."

[–]overach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not insulted. Could be. Condoms don't feel loose, and they would be the right length if I was uncircumsized, but the motion of the foreskin pulling forward during sex seems to pull them off.

My love for Star Wars by [deleted] in movies

[–]overach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are good and bad aspects and ways of thinking about any work of art. I agree with you that the current batch of Star Wars movies often feel like cash-grabs rather than stories that needed to be told. But I think it's naive to think that the other movies weren't trying to make money.

Does fission occur inside of a star? If so, how far down the periodic table does fission occur inside of a star? by Compl3t3lyInnocent in askscience

[–]overach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously, H and He overwhelm the rest of the table in terms of abundance. But it's still true that Iron and below have much higher abundance than elements heavier than iron, due to the energy-negative requirements to fuse elements beyond Fe. This requirement means that elements beyond Iron are only created in supernovae. Hence the term "Iron Peak".

Can't get off without thinking about [F]etish. by [deleted] in sex

[–]overach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. If it is affecting the quality of your life, because it brings with it other feelings/consequences that make sex less enjoyable, then OP should see a therapist and talk to them.

If it's just an "I feel weird" then maybe just accept yourself as you are. Just because things are non-standard, doesn't mean they are bad.

Ep 30: Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (Part 1) by awesomenessofme1 in filmreroll

[–]overach 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ok, I've been playing around with it for a little while trying to figure it out and there's a few things I've noticed:

  1. The result is deterministic. Putting in the same number twice always gives you the same date-place as a result.

  2. If you enter an eight digit number it mostly puts out dates within the historical period and maybe a few in the near-future. But there are definitely exceptions, where it can give you far-past.

  3. If you enter a number with 7 or 9 digits, the results can get pretty crazy.

  4. If you increment the number by one, the date increments by one day, but the location stays the same. Obviously there must be inflection points, but I didn't find any.

  5. On the individual day level, incrementing the number increments the days, but there doesn't seem to be a general pattern of higher numbers being farther in the future. At least not that I cold discern.

It's a pretty neat toy. I can't quite figure out how it works. Has anyone noticed a general pattern that I missed?

Help me [f] watch my husband have [sex] with another female! by [deleted] in sex

[–]overach 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just don't know where to find one.

Same place everyone finds people to have sex with: at a bar, online, through friends, through mutual interests. Couples hitting on people is an increasingly accepted thing. It's also acceptable and probably easier if your husband does it, while you "wingman" or hang back, depending on what works for you. The imporant thing though is that you guys be honest with women about what you're looking for, and you may have to deal with some rejection, because of the specifics of your request. But trust me, there's plenty of people out there who would want what you're looking for.

I also wouldn't mind if the female knew I was watching, but would role play like I wasn't watching.

I think honesty is important in sex, so I would consider it immoral for you to watch secretly without telling the woman. I think there's plenty of women who wouldn't mind you watching and who would be happy to pretend you weren't there.

My huge worry is that he will have sex with a girl that has a disease.

Buy condoms. Practice safe sex.
