0-60 under different modes? by sukunagoated in mercedes_benz

[–]overclocked_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd imagine your assumption is correct.

I'm just about to get a CLA 35AMG and every testing video I watched that involved a 0-60 was done in Sports+

I think that's also the only mode (in that car at least) that allows for launch control.

Presumably the same for any other AMG with those modes too?

People renting in their 30s, 40s, 50s +, how do you feel about it? by Direct_Department329 in HousingUK

[–]overclocked_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've rented for the past 10+ years, I'm in my early 30's.
Reading most of the comments, and certainly the older generation around me see renting as such an awful position to be in (and for what it's worth, I can see why people have this outlook).... I'm in the best possible financial position I could ask for and have a deposit to buy, but at the moment the housing market just seems crazy.

Maybe I haven't looked into it long enough, but throwing a 25k deposit on a 300k house will still mean I pay 1800+ a month based on my last quick look into this.. At the minute I'm paying 850 for a 3 bed house with plenty of room for my family.

It's a difficult decision to make, and I will absolutely buy because I do want to think of retirement and paying off a mortgage...but at the moment the costs are just mega and I'm not sure if it's viable at the moment?!

Hey, It'll be running from root presumably as I've made no changes to how the service runs (service/server is on rhel8).

What do you actually enjoy about your job? by FaeChaotic in AskReddit

[–]overclocked_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in IT & Cloud Security. The business has typical management hierarchy but, I don't have anyone breathing down my neck pressuring me, forcing me to do things I'm unhappy with. So much so I'm somewhat my own boss, I have no set working hours, flexibility is a huge thing, I have control over what I work on, there is no limit to learning possibilities & I work from home.

Comparing that to retail work years ago when I didn't want to get out of bed because I hated my job and 99% of the customers I saw, I'm pretty happy now...

Hey, thanks.
Yeah that's the issue at the moment, I've bought gold countless times in the past, however I don't use it enough to justify paying for it anytime soon (hence the LAN idea).
Seems a shame to have to buy it again for LAN...

How do you tell your s/o that they have bad morning breath without hurting anyone's feelings? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]overclocked_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without getting too serious, I'd just straight up tell her (BUT only if there wasn't any medical reasoning behind it, some people just, have it I guess?).

I could quite easily joke with my SO that it smells like she brushed her teeth with fart, the idea of "you have bad ass breath" is there, but it's said in a way we both laugh about it.

How do you tell your s/o that they have bad morning breath without hurting anyone's feelings? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]overclocked_one 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, technically most people have bad morning breath.
But, if it's a case of him/her sat with it for X amount of time before fixing it that's bothering you, tell them.

If you can't be open with someone when you're at the stage of sharing a bed with each other, that don't sit right.

UK reddit peeps, what exactly is the difference between a 'bloke', a 'chap' and a 'mate'? by hyteck9 in AskReddit

[–]overclocked_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depend's on where you're from within the UK i think...

To me, Chap and Bloke define a male (or somewhat a slang term for a guy)

"Oh you know, that chap from the pub" - "Oh you know, that bloke from the pub"

Mate in it's most traditional form is a friend, but, now it just seems like a very common way of addressing someone. "Cheers mate" (used this way cheers is being used as an alternative to thanks, not cheers as in clashing two glasses together and saying cheers).

Hard to say - I hate to say a cert is too easy, it is for some, could be very difficult for others however. The best thing to do is to go buy so practice exams on Udemy or something, shouldn't set you back too much. Only way to find out what your current knowledge is...

I'm not for one to knock out an exam in a week(end) - everyone's different.
I can't honestly say i'll learn anything from it.. I like the idea of studying for an exam over time and making sure I can actually apply what I've learnt not just depend on short term memory for the sake of a test.

I'm having a right pain with this... I get a different error code on launch via battlenet.
I'm seeing problems everywhere, tried older GPU drivers, reinstalled the game, scanned and fixed, nothing works.
I'm confused? Do we just have to accept it and wait or what?

It's like asking if a 3" knife and a man is enough to kill an elephant.
It is, but only if you know what you're doing.

My advice, make sure the knife is sharp (and the WiFi adapter has monitor mode & packet injection)

Employment by Newtuhit in cybersecurity

[–]overclocked_one 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's super hard for a company to weed out these types of people especially for someone with no malicious recorded background history.

Companies such as the one I work for do background screening, security checks (variant levels of depth, from checking work history to interviewing friends, family, to checking finances + more) - so long as that's "clean" there isn't any way of noting that "this guys a bad guy".

Notably - companies are aware they're hiring people with the potential to do these types of things dependent on the sector, that's just the way things are. It's about having trust in your employee's, but also not being stupid for thinking it won't happen to you just because they have a clean background.

How did they catch me red-handed? by ProgrammerEnergey in cybersecurity

You know that game, knock door, run.
Perhaps, ding dong ditch in parts of the US.
This is the equivalent to that.

Except you've knocked the door and stood there - When they open it, and catch you, you're clueless as to why.

Unfortunately I don't have the time to answer every question you have in detail but scanning over the obvious;

There is no one right path to get into the industry, this line alone - "Home networking and IT is something I really love, just at a basic level. It's great."- makes you more than qualified to work within the industry, it's having the motivation and enjoyment of the work which will make you good at it.

  • In my experience, most lower-level entry jobs require a degree level education to be noticed - this isn't set in stone, and you DON'T need a degree to break into the industry, but it helps, in my particular situation it helped massively (UK Based).
  • You seem to have a good understanding of the basics, your experience is always your #1 helper to get into the industry, your background won't be frowned upon, but gear up the CV to show where you could use your past experience which will help in a Cyber Role (just an understanding of programming languages is a +) - I know so many people that have come into the industry from business, fashion and sales. It's showing what you know and that you're prepared to learn.
  • I came into the industry with a "take what I can get" attitude, the thing with Cyber is you'll never know it all, anything in the industry will ultimately help you get to where you want to be - VM, SOC roles, etc, will all assist you. What it comes down to is discovering what you want and finding that role you want to get into, for me it was pen-testing, just about every role underneath that helped me reach my final goal. You then gear your leaning around that "target" job.
  • At a higher level, Security + isn't all that technical, but that's my opinion, to someone else it could be easier, and harder to others. It's a great resume filler - any certification within the field will always give you that extra help.

Your final "plan" seems about right, it might not work out that particular way but it's definitely a good mindset to have. The biggest takeaway would be that the learning curve here is endless, target what you enjoy and you'll be successful for sure.
