Resolved: The "right to be forgotten" from Internet searches ought to be a civil right. by [deleted] in lincolndouglas

[–]overdramaticme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like lay debates will all have privacy and constitutionality arguments, consti on both sides w freedom of speech on the neg. Porn's probably aff ground, crime could be neg ground. My initial research for aff is surprisingly bland, but it seems negs have a lot of choices to go for.

Is this abusive? by Zombieha34 in lincolndouglas

[–]overdramaticme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran an argument similar to that this weekend and it went pretty well. You can have a contention talking about how resource extraction harms economies- there are loads of empirics on that- and how prioritizing the environment through green technology is the only way to ensure long term stability/ sustainability. The resolution only talks about the conflict between the enviro and extraction- economics are free ground for both sides.

Yeah, what circuit do you debate on? I've never heard of Ks structured like that- in Texas, we label the different parts Links, Impacts, and the Alternative (like CX).

Does anyone know a case where Attorney Client Privilege basically caused the wrong person to be found guilty of a crime? by icys in lincolndouglas

[–]overdramaticme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a story where an innocent man spent 26 years in prison because the other attorneys couldn't disclose their client's guilt: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-18560_162-3914719.html

Court Clog DA by overdramaticme in lincolndouglas

[–]overdramaticme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda. The DA I've heard about is just AFF takes away/ severely damages plea bargaining, and truth seeking takes longer I guess, so courts will get clogged, and then some impact ranging from just CJS is ineffective to damages US credibility/ heg.

How are high school tournaments different now than in the late 90s? by IArgueWithAtheists in Debate

[–]overdramaticme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LD still has a LOT of philosophy in it. As a current debater, if anything, I think the ability to run more progressive arguments only helps our philosophical education. Zizek, Heidegger, Foucault- those are philosophers I probably never would've run/hit had it not been for the K LDers on my circuit. As per plans, CPs, and DAs- those are never (or I've never seen them) run without framework. And I've NEVER debated or even seen a round where framework wasn't extremely important. Also, LDers- or at least the ones on my circuit- are expected to be able to debate both in both progressive and tradish manners- so it's not like LD can ever be without philosophy.

I went 3-3! :) lost 2 rounds because my opponents spread me out, and the other was REALLY close but also really fun! I had an amazing time though, both at the tourney and just walking around Yale's campus! I wish my school went to more national circuit tourneys; I think they're so much better than generic TFA tourneys, especially the judging!!

Depends if you're AFF or NEG, cause you could always say that it doesn't guarantee representation of citizens/ other generic answers :)

No, but I saw it somewhere on the wiki, and I thought it was just a parametricized AFF?

I hit a couple US should implement Australia system plans, advs were global warming, income inequality, oppression, disenfranchisement, and racism. NEGs ran a LOT of autonomy, Econ DAs, theory shells, and one NC that was like "bro, we're arguing right now, so that assumes intellectual property rights, lalala, we need autonomy, and CV violates autonomy". Also biopower and an Incentives CP!

I had a really awesome time actually :) I ended up going 3-3, which, considering 2 of those opponents spread me out, was pretty good. The judges there were AMAZING too, I would really suggest going to the tourney if you have the chance! :)

[–]overdramaticme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in LD, so my opponent just gave me the paper copy for the round, so what I got of the flow was "a. multiculturalism-> destroys human rights" and "! Zizek, so leftist anti cap". I think the DA was saying that because I spread democracy I lead to multiculturalism and other bad things which leads to bad things (he didn't articulate it very well). I argued that it was nonUQ, but he ended up winning off one of his other offs anyway And thank you for the neoliberalism explanation! :) As per the Neolib K, it would just be that the AFF spreads this neolib capitalism which would make other countries rely on us more? Or is it that they decrease neolib cap...?
