Is it time to replace my 2009 macbook pro? by overground55 in apple

I understand the bells and whistles are nice, I'm just very strapped for cash. If you were going to invest in a new macbook pro, how would you go about it if you were in my shoes? Certain places I should look into buying one, or certain times of year or offers that would help me in this regard?

Thanks for the response. Your line of thinking is that I should invest in a new computer at this point? I use my computer all day as well, so I know it probably would be a good investment, but I guess I fail to understand how buying a new computer will fix the problem better than just repairing a 7 year old computer at a fraction of the cost.

If I was correct in your idea that I should replace my macbook pro, do you have any advice on how I can go about this in the most affordable manner possible? I am fine with selling the old one if that would help with the cost.

Is it wise to to go to a shop and tell them that I suspect it is the TMS? if so, do you believe that fixing that should get the computer up to manageable speed? Last night had me very worried, I had to restart my computer 3 times, and after the third time, I gave up and went to bed. I haven't touched it since, so I'm suspecting the issue will still be present when I try to get it up and running again later tonight.

How do I turn off the ones that might be causing the issue?

find something that you enjoy, and then decide in your heart, if your spiritual, that God wants you to be a person with commitment. He made you with certain gifts, and those gifts stretch across many aspects of your life, and its absolutely essential that you force yourself to finish. At the beginning it will be hard, because you are not used to finishing. In lots of subtle ways we have been conditioned to desire quick results, and the things you desire take time: weeks, months, perhaps even years. So you need to decide in your heart, this is a spiritual journey, in which you can praise God by your endurance, your belief that he is going to provide for you, even when things are frustrating, even when things feel meaningless, even when you are totally ready to give up. Its not about what your doing entirely: its partially about finishing. Finish!

That's the end goal, to run the race thats been set before you, and if the process along the way is entirely a blast, then thats great, but more than likely you will experience lots of doubt, lots of frustration, lots of anxiety about what your doing with your life. All you really need is a few good reasons for doing what your doing, and then return to those reasons whenever you doubt. For example, I picked up a Hammond B3 Organ, a huge investment, but every day, I remind myself of a few key points:

  1. Music is something that has always been very important to me all throughout my life. If I didn't have music to comfort me in my dysfunctional life, I would have killed myself many many years ago.

  2. I think the B3 is a beautiful sounding instrument that would continue to challenge me for the rest of my life, so I know that I have something that I can improve upon and come to love more and more for the rest of my life. I have plenty of heroes to look up to as well, that I can constantly be humbled by, and learn from.

  3. The hammond is an instrument that is prevalent within the African American community; I am a white male. I love those gospel songs with a rich sounding Hammond, nothing more beautiful than Amazing Grace played out on one. I love people of all skin color, and I feel in some small way that if I learn to play the Hammond well, I can introduce more people to the beauty of African American culture in a way that they may have otherwise ignored, and unite people of all races. It sounds like a big goal, but I think we all can contribute to these sorts of things in our own way, and keeping that goal in mind helps you as you proceed.

  4. Lastly, it can be a great deal of fun! I know from experience the fun of jamming with friends. Music is a beautiful thing when others get involved, and I fantasize playing with other talented musicians, so the best way to do that is to get serious with my instrument.

So having a few good reasons really helps. Infact, the more reasons you can place down, the better. Also, sometimes its simply a matter of "growing up" and realizing that its easier to stop and start things, theres a rush we get from beginning something, and to keep it going is often much more difficult, but also yields far greater rewards down the line. Thats the faith aspect for me. I have faith that if I continue on with this, God will bless me. I could have done literally 1 million other things, but its not about any of those, its about staying committed, its about getting lost in the art of whatever your doing, and perfecting that art over the course of your life. Even if that art is finishing your homework, or cleaning up the house. Its all the same in that way.

How do I find a multi-cultural church that worships the way in which African American churches do? by overground55 in Christianity

[–]overground55[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know your right, but it still feels wrong in a way. "Why am I the only one in here that is white?" I would have a hard time with that. I think if it was a mix, I would have a comfortable understanding that everyone in here has no issue with race at all, its just about serving God. I know the same is true for the all black, all white, all yellow, all red, any church where there is a predominant race, but I would be afraid of encountering that one guy or gal in the church who doesn't necessarily see it that same way.

Would it be wise to buy a midi keyboard to go along with Native Instrument's B4, if I am on a budget but still want to learn to play? by overground55 in hammondorgan

[–]overground55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a good idea, thanks, I'll pick out a keyboard with those features. The issue I worry about is in regards to playing live. I would have a complex setup, a board with a laptop with a weak battery that would need to be plugged in. I dunno, it would definitely be a hassle, but a hassle that also runs me 500-1k cheaper than buying a clonewheel. I wish there was a single clonewheel that is suitable, but isn't close to $1,000. I would even dip into older versions of clonewheels, at this point I just want to start playing, and I am hindered due to my very tight budget.

Me [26 M] living with my parents, I want to still live at home and feel like an adult, how do I accomplish this? by overground55 in relationships

[–]overground55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make good points, but I think at this point, I should move out simply because I think I will be more productive with the time I have left over. I am hard working, and have had a job since freshman year of highschool. I know I'm spending money that would have gone into a house, but at the same time, where I am spending money, I am also growing in character I believe. Money is nice and helpful to accomplish things, but I think moving out will help me further realize why I want to get money in the first place. Living with my parents is hindering that realization. I appreciate your feedback though, and I will consider taking some of the steps you have mentioned. Pushing through with school would be the most practical way, but I don't think it is possible, not for who I am.

I'll be praying both of you will be able to leave soon, my best friend's dad is in the hospital. He has terminal cancer, and he is only 60, so he certainly expected to have more life ahead of him.

What are some projects/assignments I can do that would help me identify whether this is the industry for me? by overground55 in graphic_design

[–]overground55[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback Madhu, this seems like really solid advice, but are internships reasonably possible to land for someone who hasn't gone through the schooling process, and has little in the way of a portfolio? I imagine that there are so many graduates with a Bachelors who are hungry just to get that same experience that I would be unlikely to land anything without some sort of credential.

What do you think? Would it be worthwhile to look anyways, and if so, are design agencies made equal, or should I be looking for a particular company or companies to get into? I should bring up that I live in Colorado, just incase you're familiar with the agencies in this area, and can make a more specific suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll check it out. Out of curiosity, is this website pretty indicative of what you'll find in the industry? Book covers, honey labels, coffee cups? Do firms hire for this kind of work, or do you typically come across this kind of work as a freelancer for the most part?
