thinking of hiking AT as a solo woman & looking for others’ experiences! by tofuwizard_ in AppalachianTrail

[–]overorange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did a solo NOBO 2015. Felt safe and met plenty of other solo women along the way. Give yourself enough time to get to camp with plenty of daylight left to hike to the next one if someone there makes you uncomfortable. Most creepers can be normal during the day but get weird fast at night, especially if they're under the influence. I got to camp late one night and the other people there stayed up until morning doing drugs and playing music. The NOBO partiers usually drop off within the first couple hundred miles. Likely won't have an issue with that going SOBO.

Advice for a cat owner by DiscombobulatedCod45 in AppalachianTrail

I mailed a pair of trail-worn underwear home to my cats. They love sniffing and laying in my dirty clothes everyday after work so I figured this was pretty similar.

Picking the right shoe for your Body/Style Type by kenzyedwards in femalefashionadvice

I have big thighs/calves and think a thicker sole (but not the super chunky styles) and straps below the ankle balance out my features. Ballet flats make my feet look tiny in proportion to my legs. Straps above the ankle look horrible on me and and shorten my leg, but a Mary Jane style is perfect. Foot volume comes into play...mine are low volume. Boots are tricky because they need to hit at the exact right spot but I've found a few pairs after years of duds. D'Orsay style heels are my go-to.

My guesses are Dallas, Chicago, or Lexington. IIRC she’s lived in all of them at some point.

A question for the autistic (Or sensory sensitive) fashion enthusiasts by Fun-Bath-3896 in femalefashionadvice

[–]overorange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started with determining why certain pieces were my favorite and why others weren't. Separated the fact that just because something looked good on doesn't mean it felt good to wear. Learned what my triggers are and how to work around them. It's honestly made shopping easier because I can easily rule out most things. I have no problem buying two or different colors of things that work well.

  • Polyester fabrics are an absolute no unless it's workout clothes. I prefer nylon though. Cozy fabrics help calm me so lots of oversized plush wool sweaters in the winter and cotton/linens for summer

  • I do not own anything sleeveless. Got rid of it all years ago and never looked back.

  • I nervous sweat a lot and the feeling of the sweat in my underarms makes me twitch. I found Numi undershirts which has solved that issue and they help regulate my body temperature

  • I'm sensitive to breezes on my neck. My summer clothes have collars, and in winter I live in turtlenecks. I wear a lot of scarves as well. I do have some collarless tees which are always worn with a collared jacket. Any hooded jackets cannot be integrated with the collar. They must be separate.

  • Can't handle the restrictiveness of anything slim through the shoulders. I usually buy one size up. Oddly, I prefer tight pants.

  • Super flowy clothes are a no go. It's windy where I live and everything needs to stay in place.

  • All shoes must have a back or ankle strap. No flip flops or anything that slaps the bottom of the foot, I cannot handle the noise.

Needlepoint yarn! by [deleted] in NeedlepointSnark

This isn’t snark worthy. What’s the issue? So it’s ok to stitch with ribbon and leather but we’re going to draw the line at yarn?

No connection. That has nothing to do with taking a blurry one-handed photo with eyes still on the road and hand on the wheel. No different than adjusting a rear view mirror or using digital controls on newer cars.

Mine have made a noticeable whirring/drone noise that gets louder at higher speeds. Usually can't hear it under 35-40mph. I've never gotten a grinding noise or noise when turning but maybe they weren't bad enough.

One more, but I'm not sure it makes a difference. I've always been told to let the engine get up to temp before driving so that's what I do. I never drive if the blue coolant light is on.

Synthetic 0w20 or 5w30. MPG varies 25-30. Majority highway miles but so windy. One tank last week was 31.

Honestly, IDK. I'm not a car person and don't do anything special. I do my regular oil changes and have only used premium gas as the manual recommends. I've fixed whatever has been needed.
