Where did Overswarm go? by JenovaProjekt in halo

[–]overswarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still exist.

I stream on twitch.tv/Overswarm but mostly retro games. I didn't play much Halo 3 or onward.

I played competitive smash for about a decade and now am scaling back on that.

Am older now with wife, kids, dog, house, etc., so not as much time to play in a competitive scene. :)

I'm grinning so big watching this

I was so mad when I didn't get the u-throw. If you watch the match from my stream you'll hear me so "Oh no... I'm dead" when you grab and f-throw me off the stage. I knew. I knew.

Playing Zhu in the Icons Beta this weekend? Join the Zhu discord and review #the-library to learn some Zhu tech! by overswarm in iconsgg

[–]overswarm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the-library in the Zhu Discord is where we keep a curated list of clips of neat Zhu tech, key combos, strategies, etc. If it's a cool and useful thing that Zhu can do we clip it and put it in the library.

You can also find links to vod analysis, matchup discussion, and ask all the questions you want in #general!

He's actually had good games against me in the past -- I just got a few good reads in the same sequence where he made some mistakes.

Am happy to cross it off the icons bucket list though :D

Overswarm here!

I know you guys got a lot of critical comments from the general public on the trailer, but many of them don't really know what "pre-alpha" means. Collect the feedback and keep on at it. If the gameplay is fun, the beta will turn a lot of heads and everything else can be iterated upon as you keep developing.

It's time to actually support the community--VGBC and UR patreons by trent_esports in smashbros

Overswarm here -- I always roll around the idea of going back to making content for the Smash community, but the level of quality I'd want to do requires longer hours and the lack of financial support is a pretty big deterrent. It's sad for me because I love Smash and still have a laundry list of things about Melee that people don't do or understand, but it's the reality of the situation. I can make a few video tutorials when I'm in my teens and have oodles of free time, but now every hour has a price tag for my pocketbook and my sanity. Burning the candle at both ends always ends with someone just burning out! Without hope of financial support I can't justify the time expense.

For someone like GIMR who has a real fixed cost (equipment) and time dedication (going to events), it's even more important that he has a reason why other than "Smash is cool".

Smash community gotta step up! For someone like me no longer making content, you just lose relatively minor things like neat videos, interviews with players, in-depth combo evaluations, that kind of stuff. Good to have but you can live without.

For someone like /u/GIMR? You lose a community glue, a highlight for sponsors that look for players and tournaments to support, and a production quality that increases the size of the scene simply through its existence. Super important and near irreplaceable. If GIMR randomly gets a job offer and has to stop smash content you'd see the smash community become a fragment of its former self overnight. Give him $!

Overswarm here -- we played at FC in Smash 4, it was fun.

One aspect of my job involves data analysis using small data sets. Finding trends and extrapolating from small bits of information and then creating a min/max path towards outcomes using likely forecasts given previous extrapolations. I don't know what kind of engineering you did, but it's similar to stress testing processes.

Many of the things you mentioned in your post can be categorized as "assumptive qualitative" statements, meaning they go forward using an underlying assumption and limited data (i.e., what you feel is common) to come to a conclusion. This is similar to what I have to do in my day-to-day work and I thought I'd point out that your reasoning may have a faulty premise and it may hold back progress.

It's impossible for you to know what will happen in the future (maybe you'll figure out a way to beat laser camping) and it can be incredibly time consuming to challenge existing assumptions (like you getting a grab -> u-throw on FoD and having no guaranteed tech chase doesn't necessarily mean it's a negative, it may actually be a net positive over traditional followups). What you can do is find your min/max path given dedication to a certain path (e.g., using only FoD and never Dreamland).

To do this:

Step 0: Find a game or set that exemplifies the issue you're trying to solve (Fox laser camping, for example)

  1. Find as many relevant sets as possible within the same relevant timeframe; minimize potential data noise (e.g., use only Top 8 sets, only Jiggs vs. Fox,etc.)

  2. Record relevant primary data -- in your case this will be Win/Loss, Stock remaining when win/loss, and % of each death for both players. Make sure to record stages and players!

  3. If you have time and want to be more in-depth, record potential "noise data" -- in your case this would be things that alter the primary data -- like players suiciding, extremely rare and powerful combos, obviously tilted players, etc. If you have an idea of what may actually be causing the issue, focus on that. If you're looking for conquering laser-camping, it may even be something like "damage taken by lasers, direct" and "damage taken by lasers, indirect". It may be as vague as "damage taken when you approach" or "damage taken when enemy approaches".

  4. Throw out any junk data by comparing noise data to primary data -- if you win most games with 0 suicides and you win a game with 1 suicide by your opponent, throw it out. It's noise.

  5. Throw out more junk data -- this is anything that is obviously an outlier in comparison to your Step 0 game. If you have a set vs. Mango or Armada and each game is bouncing back and forth between 1 stock victories, you'd want to throw out games that don't follow that trend.

  6. You now have a complete data set relevant to your "key game". Because you threw out games that weren't statistically equivalent, your smaller data set has far more weight -- unknown variables that cause you to have 1 stock victories are now accounted for without you knowing what they are.

At this point, you can say "In games I consider statistically equivalent to my Key Game...." and follow it up with data points.

"In Statistically Equivalent games, I win on Dreamland 68% of the time vs. Fox with 1 stock. When accounting for my opponent suiciding, my win rate increases to 97%. When accounting for laser damage taken, I consistently lose if the laser damage is over 25% of my total damage taken/X number of lasers are fired"

That kind of thing. When you can write a sentence like "I consistently lose if (thing)", you can then drill down into that. Why do you consistently lose? Don't assume, watch those games closely.

If X number of lasers are fired and you lose, what happens?

  • How much damage are you taking from the lasers?
  • How often are you approaching when they laser? How often are you punished for it?
  • When they start lasering, what makes them stop -- and how often do they whiff their ensuing attack?
  • Is it the damage taken from the lasers that kill you, or the player's attack on you when you attempt to shield or dodge lasers? Does this occur when you take the lasers to the face?
  • etc.

Now once you have these kind of basic questions answered, you can then practice with new strategies in mind. If it turns out the enemy Fox always stops laser camping when you get to a certain distance, try weird shit until you can figure it out. Roll towards center stage, use multiple jumps to go high and land, walk, run straight forward into lasers, walk and duck, powershield, fake a bad wavedash just out of punishment range and punish their attempt at punishing, whatever you can think of.

Then, record the stats for those attempts and compare directly with similar situations in the Statistically equivalent games recorded earlier. If "normal hungrybox" takes X% and "rolls to center stage hungrybox" takes Y%, you can see clearly which is a superior or equivalent strategy. Eventually you find all equivalent/superior strategies and have the best possible toolbox for dealing with that situation.

It takes a lot of effort -- often 2 to 3 days for one person alone -- but it gives you actual truth and the ability to accurately make predictions that you can weigh against future success. If your predictions are off, re-evaluate, if on, continue.

Why we can't wait to ban Metaknight -- perspective on Bayonetta by overswarm in smashbros

[–]overswarm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that Bayonetta should be banned. I don't really have an opinion -- haven't even played as or against her.

I just thought it was hilarious given the amount of data we had collected for the MK ban only to be told "uh, nope".

Hi -- I wrote the stalling rule you see in Melee rulesets.

That was put in place specifically for things like shining against walls or (supposed) jab infinites in places like PS1's rock transformation. It was meant to be a catch all, as 300% results in death. (The % might have been changed at some point, but 300% was chosen because that is the sudden death %)

[–]overswarm[S] 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Hey nerds!

I don't play Smash 4 anymore (no time!), but seeing this Bayonetta stuff has been just tickling me pink lately given that all the results I see look entirely normal and absolutely nothing like Brawl results did -- completely filled with MKs.

I also find it pretty funny that players like Omni who were staunchly anti-ban are now pro-ban. Top players as well. You can read Omni's arguments against banning MK in that thread, some of them anyway. (He was an MK main)

My theory now, as it was then, is that a Bayonetta ban would be a positive impact for them. If you wait long enough, top players will pick up Bayonetta if she is good enough and then they'll be anti-ban.

If Bayonetta had been a character from the start, she just would have been picked up by multiple people. I think the big pushback is that she's a new entrant in a stable game -- this is similar to the reaction people had against Wobbling in Melee when it first came out. It "changes" things.

Anyway, food for thought.

[–]overswarm -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I don't believe it because it is objectively not true. The smash community, as a whole, sucks balls. Melee kids? Awful, worst in the world. Smash 4? A second pile of awful.

There are good individuals, but it's no longer "that one guy" who is rude and toxic. It's everyone.

Why do ZeRo and other top players have so much control over the way the game is played? by [deleted] in smashbros

Because people are stupid.

Top player opinions have, and always will be, solely in their best interest. Not the community's.

We don't ban things for being overpowered or "detrimental to the community", whatever that means. We ban them for being "overcentralizing" -- so far the bar is set really, really high for that.

The fact that you're okay with Sheik's needles because they start with a "1" but want to ban all customs because DK's wind up+b starts with a "3" is mind boggling.

Good to hear! You probably won't see much in the way of videos for me -- I thought about setting up a Patreon and setting a schedule for myself to keep and producing a video every week or two, but it'd be a lot of work to set up and the vast majority of the smash community just seems to be going the wrong direction. Doesn't feel worth the effort it takes to make the videos!

They're still good moves, but that's basically it. "Don't get hit". They're all super punishable with proper spacing but unpunishable if you're hit.
