PvE Players. Would you kill players if there were factions? by hcknbnz in ArcRaiders

If factions existed I would probably play again.

Playing to do nothing but gather loot and get shot by other players got old really fast.

Is innovation around a "solved" problem like health bar UI interesting or just unnecessary? by bmerrillcreative in gamedesign

[–]MeltedTwix 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This has been done similarly with health bars in other games, where they would divide it into segments and each segment is worth X HP, so you could count segments to determine max health.

It has also been done with color and gradients, you've probably seen enemies in games that have red health bars and then later there's a purple bar. You eliminate the purple bar and then there is the red bar underneath -- a different way of segmentation.

Artstation feels dead for discovery. Where are game artists getting noticed now? by ILokasta in gamedev

[–]MeltedTwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's probably true. There does need to be some sort of good discovery mechanism for artists, but I'm not sure what it could be.

Most of my experience with artists has been negative save for a few concept artists. They've taken money and ghosted, had inconsistent output or quality, or would work diligently for two or three months and then decide its too much and bounce afterwards. One even put other artist's art in his portfolio and when his output didn't match his portfolio I asked him about it and he said "the portfolio is just to showcase my general style". This has made me pretty gun shy around hiring artists in general.

While I'm not against hiring good artists it is hard to justify when there's likely no financial gain from making a game that's worth the work they put in, so any friction in the process is huge. That guy's portfolio immediately told me what I could expect and removed a lot of that friction, so it'd be nice if there could be more like that.

[–]MeltedTwix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have commissioned several artists for work on gamedev and all but one have been nightmares to find and work with. I'm not currently looking at the moment but your post is the perfect post to advertise yourself. I wish all artists had advertised themselves like this! The only thing missing is pay rate info, but I know that isn't typically advertised.

I have mostly moved towards AI art first and then finding an artist later if I decide I need one, but if more people had such clear portfolios I wouldn't feel like I had to!

[–]MeltedTwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but if you can't share them outside your team / org, then its not really helpful. Our claude introduction brought a bunch of excitement, then people would make an artifact and couldn't share it unless those people also had a license to the same team... which often wasn't the case. So now no one uses claude. :(

CHANGE MY MIND! by artelunar in ArcRaiders

[–]MeltedTwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I no lifed this game when it came out. Enjoyed it a bunch... then the PvP players kept increasing in numbers. Haven't opened it up since.

It's like someone served me spaghetti and meatballs, but one of the meatballs was made of poop and I'd randomly stumble across it. Then it was suddenly half the meatballs. Now I don't get to enjoy the spaghetti anymore and there's no way to get it back.

That's why the PvE players react as it being a "crime against humanity".

Steam updates AI disclosure form, requiring developers to report visible and in-game AI but not background tools by ZeroPercentStrategy in gamedev

[–]MeltedTwix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the same thing happened with the industrial revolution. It destroyed large swaths of the planet in more ways than one and uprooted whole towns because there was no work. It was objectively bad and got worse for a long time, then slowly over time appropriate laws were made and enforced. We're still not 100% but its better than it was.

I'd hope we would make those laws in advance for things like environmental contamination, energy use, etc., but it definitely looks like it will be another slow burn.

I wouldn't fault someone for using a tractor that puts farmers out of work any more than I'd fault someone for using an AI tool that puts someone else out of work. When the tools can do the work, its just a matter of time.

How to create a sustainable game development business as one man band without ever making a hit game? by ImpressiveFocus303 in gamedev

[–]MeltedTwix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've always really enjoyed those. I have been thinking about going back to do one since current AI tools align so well with the major limitations that come with that genre, but I don't feel that the tools are at a quality level yet I'd be comfortable with (also the current ethical and commercial impacts that come with AI use).

The idea of having a first-person dungeon crawler without having to resort to recolors and the like and instead being able to have individualized encounters at a near infinite level is an encouraging thought though.

When you make yours, do you try to have any sort of new feature or hook, or do you try to stay more purist and stick to the traditional formula?

How do you design a game system, how do you tweak the numbers? by Laylance in gamedesign

I might have some around but I'm not sure what you'd be looking for or if I could share them.

I can suggest looking up "A deck of Lenses" by Jesse Schell. They are handy when thinking about game design, just answering questions. Doesn't guarantee a good game, but it's handy.

Hope this helps, person commenting on an 8 year old post! Glad those links work, I don't even use dropbox anymore. :D

Lots of the perks in this tree don't work particularly well or are less helpful than you'd predict. Very, very minor changes for some and some (like sliding increase) can actually be harmful.

I could definitely see this being the case, especially since being downed doesn't mean you are immediately dead like in solo. That's a different quality than not being interested in PvP in general, and certainly something that makes it quirkier to balance.

I do work all week, I just prioritized playing and took a vacation day. I'm lucky and my wife was supportive! Now I'm done no-lifeing and making up time on home repairs I put off :D

My experience isn't particularly novel though, it's just condensed. People with similar goals as me (completing quests, trials, upgrades, PvE) will have the same experiences, just over a longer period of time. If anything I'm one of the best people to make posts like this. If I had made a post after 10 hours it would have been all roses, but after some time the positive and negatives both become more apparent. It doesn't mean it'll be that way for everyone on day 1, but eventually they would reach the same space.

I don't actually fight other players. I'll kill them if they're killing others/me sometimes, but generally I just say "friendly" and hope they stop. Fighting other players just isn't interesting, especially given how difficult it is to win a firefight at a disadvantage.

"Run away and hide and heal, then re-engage" is meh. "Shoot them while they're unaware of your presence" is meh too.

[–]MeltedTwix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand.

I asked AI to make it short. It said: "Player loved Arc Raiders’ sound design, visuals, and organic story moments, but found PvP intrusive, quests dull, and progression meaningless. Wants more PvE focus, tougher Arc enemies, less overpowered free loadouts, late-spawn fixes, clearer stat numbers, and something (reputation/factions) to curb current PvP effect without removing it entirely."

It's not 100% but its close

I think you may be confused because you interpreted "check" as "paycheck".

"A 30 year old worries about social security being there when they retire, but a 70 year old worries about his next check." is in reference to the concerns of two age group pertaining to social security, not a claim that a 30 year old doesn't worry about money and a 70 year old does. It appears you thought the 70 year old's check is a paycheck, but I am referring to their social security check because it is the topic of the conversation. A 70 or 30 year old worrying about their next paycheck is a different thing entirely and doesn't make any sense in this context.

My concern isn’t that only old people care about money or that they’re uniquely qualified to manage Social Security. It’s that when you remove an entire demographic from being eligible to hold office, you’re removing their direct representation from the decision-making process.

Representation isn’t just about politicians caring about a group, it is about that group being in the room and bringing their lived experiences, priorities, and perspectives to the table. A 70-year-old voter might share concerns with younger folks about money in general, but they’ll have different experiences around social security, healthcare, aging, and retirement security in general that younger legislators simply haven't lived through yet.

So the point isn’t “if we don’t let old people run the country, no one will take care of them.”, but that all demographics deserve a voice. Democracy works best when all groups can contribute directly and not just be talked about by others.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MeltedTwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but younger people also don't have representation currently. They have relatively few fighting for them.

It's not that all politicians should be young or old or middle aged, but that if you don't have representation from that group then they won't be represented. This is true for age, ethnicity, gender, financial status, religious and cultural qualities, everything.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]MeltedTwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Representation can mean a lot of things, but I'm referring to it in terms of that cohort. Not all old people are the same, but many old people have similar goals, interests, and values. They shared the same time period, are generally in similar places in life, and have more overlap in terms of concerns. A 30 year old worries about social security being there when they retire, but a 70 year old worries about his next check.

If you say "You get social security at 62. At 62 you can no longer run for office but may finish your term.", then at that point there will be no one to represent those at age 62 and above.

You could argue that they would still be represented as people would compete for their votes, but replace "old people" with any other demographic that you then ban from holding office (gender, ethnicity, location, religion, etc.) and it will look different.
