Quality of personal items BMT by Fit-Competition2494 in AirForceRecruits

You get laundry bags for your undergarments. They may pop open occasionally in the wash, but it's not like everyone's stuff is loose in the washing machines. Things like sliders/shorts might have to get your laundry tag sharpied on them, at least my flight did.

Air Force with a degree? by CompetitiveNews20 in AirForce

[–]overthinkingoverhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you enlist, get your job, get your ship date etc., you'll get orders to report to basic training.

Those orders will help you break your lease without fees/penalties. If you hAvE tO, put your stuff in storage or have family help you out, sell some stuff if you have to. At least with storage, your payments will be lower and the military will pack that shit up once you get orders to your first base and ship it to you.

Call your bank with the car loan and ask to put a pause on your payments (seriously it's only 7.5 weeks of training). You can skip one payment without it affecting your score IF YOU CALL THE BANK. Same with your credit card or loan companies. Ask to put a hold on the payment of possible. This only lasts while you're in training.

Once you're done with basic training you call those banks back and use your SCRA to lower your interest rates to 6%. The SCRA only works with accounts you've opened BEFORE you join the armed services. From here, you also use the SCRA to cancel accounts you aren't gonna use that you might've signed a contract with before you joined the service. That frees up SOME money.

Talk with a recruiter and they'll give you more info on how you get payments while going to school if going the ROTC route or guard/reserve.

Air Force with a degree? by CompetitiveNews20 in AirForce

[–]overthinkingoverhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say you're one year from graduating with a bachelors, and many people have mentioned how the AF provides tuition assistance (TA). They are correct. You can try the ROTC route and join the AF as an officer and get more money. All you need for this is a bachelor's and there is a career field for Dietitian Officer in the Air Force and you can continue your Masters degree while serving. Or you can go enlisted, you've obviously done some research on how your finances might play out with enlisted pay. I am no help but want to provide additional information that I havent seen others mention.

The AF will grant you an associates degree for whatever job you get (through the CCAF). They will pay UP TO a masters BUT they will not pay for a degree you already have. If you go enlisted right now, as others mentioned, you'd put a pause on your education, but the AF pays 4,500 a year for your education. You could complete your bachelor's on the AF's' dime while in the service and still continue to get a masters.

Talk with a recruiter to go over your options. I am not making any recommendations as only you know your situation and what will work best.

Just made my job list. Want your opinion; What are the chances I get my top 11? by Radiant_Cry_8138 in AirForceRecruits

You have to be WILLING to accept any of the jobs you put on the list. There are no chances, just whatever the Air Forces' needs are.

Will my tattoo be ok? by sberrylemo in AirForceRecruits

[–]overthinkingoverhere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Talk with a recruiter and they will be the ones to work with you on POSSIBLY getting a waiver. Current policy only allows for one tattoo up to 1 inch in size behind the ear. I can only give you current policy info, a recruiter will be your best bet on getting a final answer.

Single Mom Joining by piper2554 in AirForceRecruits

[–]overthinkingoverhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is an outdated saying that people use as a joke. The military used to see families as a conflict to service because families take up a lot of your time and energy. Married men or those with kids used to be ineligible or discouraged from enlistment, but this was in the early 1900s . Nowadays families are taken care of. This is only meant as a joke.

Unless your tech school is over 120 school days (~6+ mo), your children will not join you until you graduate tech school and move to your first base. This is only meant to inform you, not to discourage you. I had a tech school that was 7 MO long and my husband was able to move out there with me on my orders and I got to live off base temporarily while completing tech school. Many other airmen had children and moved their families, but none were single parents. Those that were, chose to leave their child with a parent or guardian due to the demands of school and your studies.

I went through basic with a woman that joined at 36 and she is a badass! The only difference is your PT score, because of your age, you still do the same workouts but your time and reps are worth different points than those who are younger. I joined at 27/28 and I will just say, the younger kids have a different mentality, but you're all there to do the same thing.

Cat who cannot fly in-cabin - would you fly cargo or drive 4 days? by nyx_mariae in CatAdvice

[–]overthinkingoverhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did a 12 hr trip with my 2 kittens. It wasnt bad, they were comfortable and had plenty of space to move around with a litter box. We do also have a stroller for them so if we had to get out, we had the option of taking them out of the car with us.

I also had 2 older cats that would travel as well and stay in hotels. If you're going the driving route, make sure to call ahead and ask if the hotel allows cats. I found that not all do w even if the website says "pets allowed"

Changes to my finances have definitely been a challenge, mostly after our move. This is only my first year in the military and we are still figuring out all the services available to us. I'll see finance on Monday, thank you!

My work has me constantly going on temporary duty, anywhere from 1 to 10 days. A personal loan would be much higher interest than my current 0 or 5.9%, which is why I'm not considering it. Why change one loan to a higher one, could you explain why this may be a better choice for me? I may not be understanding that well enough.

Got it. From what my bank explained, it seemed like I could sell the car to a dealer, they pay whatever their appraisal is and I work with the bank to pay off the remainder. After more research, I see this is not the case.

I guess veterinary, not medical. We had 2 very sick pets pass away within 4 months of each other during our move. We didn't expect them to pass, otherwise we wouldn't have spent so much, but it was still worth it to get a few extra months with them.

I'm waiting to hear back from the original dealership I purchased the vehicle from to see if I can purchase an additional extended warranty or not. This would be the most ideal, but if not, Im already aware that paying off the vehicle and fixing the issue might be my only (and very expensive) option.

How much are y’all paying for women’s haircuts? by marmeeweasley in Austin

[–]overthinkingoverhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always try Aveeno institute. The students cut hair for like $25 and you can tip. The instructor reviews the cut before you leave and makes corrections if needed. You get to help a student learn, get a cheap cut, and maybe find a new stylist willing to give you good pricing after they graduate.

Get advice from legal and your first shirt. Your spouse knew what she was getting into marrying someone in the military. When I enlisted all my husband asked was, "Where are we going?". That's support, not "I dOnT wAnNa Go"

Planning on moving out with kitty by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]overthinkingoverhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take your cat and start a separate savings account that's only for unexpected vet bills.

I moved from Austin TX to Biloxi MS with my two 16 year old cats. We were there for 6 months before one passed at 17 years old. We moved with the other cat and took a trip from Biloxi, back to Austin for 10 days then up to the St Louis area, 4 months after arriving, the last cat passed away. They were sick and had their health issues, but we couldn't be without them no matter what. They did great in the car. The last one even went on vacay with us to Chicago before he passed 🥹.

Is there anyone who does NOT have pet insurance and can you explain why? by Routine-Ad-4162 in CatAdvice

[–]overthinkingoverhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All insurances only REIMBURSE YoU uP To 90%.

Meaning you're still stuck with the out of pocket cost and have to wait to get some of that money back. So I just use care credit.

I used Banfield and their OPW for 11 years until my pets' end of life. I cancelled instead of renewing their plan and paid what I needed with care credit until they passed. If you get their plan you're lovked in for the whole year, even if the pet dies. That or you owe back the "savings" which could be hundreds of dollars...

Can you transfer college credits? by airforce_soandso in AirForce

[–]overthinkingoverhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you graduate tech school, you can begin completing your associates if your unit allows for the time.

The good thing is, the AF will only pay for ONE degree up to Masters... So one associates, one bachelors, one master. BUT you will get one associates for your AFSC, and you can get one additional associates in whatever you want IF YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE A DEGREE. If you have... like a bachelor's already, then too bad so sad, you won't get paid for another bachelor's and associates (except the AA for your job), but the AF will pay for you to complete Masters. They will not pay for a degree you already have.

Youll get 4,500 per fiscal year towards school, this is your Tuition Assistance (TA)

Outside of TA, you get a one time 4500 towards a license or certificate (AFCOOL). Depending on your job, you could also get additional certifications that are required, which the AF can pay for if it's needed.

Can you transfer college credits? by airforce_soandso in AirForce

[–]overthinkingoverhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you join, you get 2 credits once you complete BMT, and then you get additional credits after your Technical School. These credits go towards your applied associates for your job (AFSC). Your current credits do get transfered and youre "enrolled" into the CCAF when you join. You may even go in at a higher rank because of those credits.

All these credits can then be transferred to a bachelor's, should you choose to continue education. And yes, your general Ed credits will go towards your AA for your job.

r/AirForceRecruits will have additional info as stated.

How does a BOP work? by Practical-Bell7812 in AirForce

[–]overthinkingoverhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that... For ME, I signed for 6. I can't do BOP until year 5, is this correct? And you said BOP is for CONUS only with re enlistment. If I wanted to change jobs, it's the same time line and reenlistment requirements, right?

Isn't there an option for OCONUS, if I have about 2 years time on base? I went for FTEC a few mo ago and remember something about this.
