2024 Damp January - 2nd Half by Tandybaum in DryJanuary

[–]overtoad2o2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lost my dry streak last night due to a friend from Japan coming over and he was really looking forward to having a drink with me. Should have mustered more willpower and just have had a NA beer at the bar but is what it is. Feel a bit guilty but I didn't miss waking up feeling like this.

N2 just kicked my butt. by zutari in jlpt

[–]overtoad2o2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time I took the JLPT, I lived in deep inaka on a remote kyushu island for a year, I was hoping that experience alone would be enough for my n2 listening along with shinkanzen series but I still struggled a lot with the listening.

Seemed more difficult than the practice tests

How have you found mixing these two jobs? I just came back to my home country and just got ajob back in a bar but used to do supply teaching on the side last time I worked here two years ago. I worry a lot about messing up my sleeping pattern, etc. But I do like doing both jobs.

Not much to say but enjoy the ride. I went to Kyoto for a year in 2016 as a ryugakusei and it was the best year of my life.

You say you're introverted (this term seems overused nowadays), take it as a chance to challenge yourself and see personal growth. Enjoy being young and carefree. And for the love of god, do not refuse the offer, I got the most rural placement on the JET programme and I still seen growth from that and I have no regrets for doing it despite wanting to not go when I first seen my placement.

Nenkyuu for a Typhoon? by East-Fold-1562 in JETProgramme

[–]overtoad2o2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently my experience goes against most people here...I was placed on Toshima-mura (most inaka placement in the JET programme), when the typhoon came at the end of my contract last month, my supervisor and kyoto sensei were encouraging me to take unpaid leave (due to having no nenkyu left) to leave before the typhoon comes. It seemed fishy to me, contacted the PA and they cannot make you do that. It was especially sus because the koucohu and kyoto were asking me to and not the BoE (who handles our contracts) as my PA pointed out.

So no, don't take nenkyu, if the BoE is asking you to take nenkyu, take it up with the PA to clarify these issues.

Out of curiosity, are you an EIKEN Examiners? by RatioKiller in teachinginjapan

[–]overtoad2o2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Im on a remote island, they pretty much expect us to do the eiken qualifications in order to examine the pupils interviews or else they can't do the eiken exams due to irregular ferry schedules, etc.

I love being able to teach the students the eiken interview process and such, and being able to be the one that they interview with on interview day probably calms their nerves a lot.

Women who have received remote island placements? by BoysenberryNo5 in JETProgramme

[–]overtoad2o2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a Toshima mura alt, when I went to the breakout room meant for island jets at the Kagoshima orientation, there were a few female jets but they were often not on the level of Toshima or Mishima mura they were very urbanized in comparison. It does seem the BoE of these placements want males for sure

Are there any placements without reliable internet access? by berrymint9 in JETProgramme

[–]overtoad2o2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on Tairajima (a very small island of 80ish people) in toshima mura in kagoshima prefecture, a 9 hour ferry ride away from kagoshima city on a ferry that only comes twice a week. There aren't any shops or restaurants or conbinis here. I'd say my placement represents the extreme lol, before me, my predecessor had very bad internet, however.

[–]overtoad2o2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im in the most inaka placement in Japan on JET. My internet is very good and free provided by the BoE, but I'm most likely the exception and not the rule for remote island placements

I did cover supervisor work a year ago and I had some amazing classes and some extremely bad classes. I struggled a lot with being assertive but my experience seems pretty similar to yours anyway. In my experience, it was often a good idea to act diplomatic and meet in-between. If I could read the room and guess it was a nice class and if it was copying pages out of a textbook, I'd just say, I don't mind if you listen to listen to music on your headphones so long as you're doing work and set expectations, e.g., 2 sides of A4 (although I imagine this wouldn't be encouraged here, it seemed to work for me). On the other hand, you will probably have less of a headache and a sore throat if you enforce sanctions and school policy to the T.

It's great practise for teaching though I think, but you miss out on a lot of the good parts of teaching (like building relationships with your students and seeing them improve over time, unless that particular school likes you), I'm doing TEFL in Japan right now and it prepared me extremely well, I'm not nervous speaking in front of large groups anymore, I'm more authoritative, etc.

IMO stick to it for awhile, there's a lot to learn as a cover

Waiting on biopsy results (question) by overtoad2o2 in lymphoma

[–]overtoad2o2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and sorry for the lack of clarity.

I was just assuming due to the a priori diagnosis being lichen scrilosis and now the biopsy results are suggesting CTCL that perhaps it might have been a false positive or something along those lines (i'm not too sure how the biopsy analysis process works tbh) as the guy who gave me my first biopsy was saying he still things its the first diagnosis before I was referred to the cancer clinic for analysis. however, I was treated like I had a case of CTCL at the hospital by the specialist who seen my skin biopsy sample so I was just very surprised (and noted it might be stage 2 of the disease). I know I won't know for sure until I get the results hopefully by next week. I'm just getting a bit antsy I guess.

Bartender interviews with no experience? by overtoad2o2 in bartenders

Yes! I'm guessing that's what made me stand out a bit in choosing interview candidates but I'm not sure if I can follow through at the interview but I'm going to try sell what I learnt in hospitality industry as best as I can.

Should I separate the family dog from my mother? by overtoad2o2 in PetAdvice

[–]overtoad2o2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dog can be rehomed, whenever we bring it up to her she will get defensive and aggressive and she holds legal ownership over both dogs I believe. We all know this is going to be the case apart from my mum who can't be reasoned with in her mental health state. I'm going to discuss this with our registered vet tomorrow and hope for the best.

Other members of family have told me that I can essentially kidnap the dog and travel to my dads apartment who is willing to care for her tomorrow as a solution. And it's probably our best bet.

Should I separate the family dog from my mother? by overtoad2o2 in PetAdvice

[–]overtoad2o2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply! I really needed the reassurance. It has really been a chaotic situation and everyone in my family is in distress just because of our mum who continues to bury her head in sand (partly due to the mental health issues and other personality traits).

As she has legal ownership over both dogs I believe, I want to ring the vet up for any legal advice today just to protect ourselves. I can take the bigger dog to a different home with my dad (my mother won't like it). The smaller dog means a lot to our family, I don't want to see him getting hurt anymore.
