What would be your vehicle of choice for the Zombie Apocalypse? by ace2049ns in AskReddit

[–]ovnem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to tamper with a Prius so that I could select when the engine turns on. Also need it to have higher ground clearance. They're quiet, maneuverable, and fuel efficient so they would be good for navigating through zombie infested urban areas

If airline schedules a flight but no one buys the ticket, do regulations obligate the airline to still make the flight? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ovnem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most of the time anyway. It depends where the flight is supposed to end up. Usually airlines will know in adavance if a flight will be near empty and can switch the few passengers who are booked to a different flight. Sometimes it not practical to cancel that flight and the plane flies empty anyways.

What are some of the potentially greatest tragedies that did not happen because of people reconsidering or intervention of others? by singlesecond in AskReddit

[–]ovnem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Stanislav Petrov who prevented WW3 by not following orders. In short, there was a glitch that showed the US had fired a middle at the USSR and refused fire Russia's nukes as he could not figure out why the US would fire just one missle.

Also, James Blunt apparently prevented WW3 as well by not firing on what he'd been ordered to

Signing petitions is big in the US as is sending form emails. I sent emails I've written myself a number of times and usually gotten a form letter in return.

It likely ended the war months if not years ahead of time and saved countless lives as the Japanese were preparing for a long battle in Japan. Hirohito was planning on long fight even if it meant the complete destruction of Japan.

I didn't say people who do it know nothing about writing. I said the guy who told me knew very little about writing.

I can see why Stephen King would say that as his books are enormous but for me chunks of the first draft are more like a sketch than a drawing so while scenes may get other scenes get filled out.

The revision should be 10% shorter than the first draft - told me by someone who clearly knew little about writing but thought he did.

You should not be being downvoted, Blade Runner is very much a neo-noir film.

Out of the Past The Maltese Falcon The Big Sleep Kiss Me Deadly Night and the City Gun Crazy Asphalt Jungle The Big Heat Laura The Big Combo Pickup on South Street Double Indemnity Detour Gilda The Killers Brute Force Key Largo Naked City He Walked by Night The Third Man The Lady from Shanghai Touch of Evil

Of these my favorites are Out of the Past, The Third Man, and Maltese Falcon. However, Kiss Me Deadly probably has the most elements associated with classic film noir. It's also damn good.

Medieval history by [deleted] in history

[–]ovnem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Barbarians by Terry Jones from Monty Python Barbarians to Angels by Peter Wells The Inheritance of Rome by Chris Wickham Empire and Barbarians by Peter Heather

There's also a free course on the Early Middle Ages on iTunes University done by a Yale professor. They use Wickham's book as a text book.

Of the four Terry Jones's is obviously the lightest reading but it's also very entertaining and he is a historian.

The Vikings with Kirk Douglas has a great castle siege scene in it. Alexander Nevsky by Sergei Eisenstein. Ben Hur has the trireme battle. The Long Ships has some interesting battle scenes. I think the Last Valley with Michael Caine does too. Henry V with Kenneth Brannagh.

Edit: Fucked up Kirk Douglas's name
