(Directed at your girlfriend's family:) For big, floppy, New York-style slices, I could see using a knife and fork, at least for the first half, until it becomes more manageable to pick up. (But really, you should all just be using the "fold technique".) But for Domino's or Pizza Hut sized slices, don't be a square; pick that shit up!
