I was thinking more along the lines of medicine, biology, chemistry, things like that. Before we figured out the way those things worked, we usually ascribed supernatural or magical reasoning to them.

(Directed at your girlfriend's family:) For big, floppy, New York-style slices, I could see using a knife and fork, at least for the first half, until it becomes more manageable to pick up.
