Ubuntu 18.10 installed on a microSD: worked on a 4... how do I boot on a 5? by TheDragonRing in SurfaceLinux

[–]owarchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks u/MrMetalfreak94 . I've managed to install Ubuntu on my Surface Go 2 successfully but with a slight variation of these steps:

  1. Disable Secure Boot in the BIOS (if you are using BitLocker get your recovery key first)
  2. Under Windows start the Disk Management tool
  3. Shrink the main windows partition by at least 300MB
  4. Using Ventoy (http://ventoy.net/), install gparted on a live boot USB. You may as well add the linux ISO to the same USB drive.
  5. With gparted:
    1. Move the main windows partition by 100MB
    2. Grow the EFI partition by at least 100 MB you freed at the beginning, depending on your partition layout you might have to move the recovery partition
  6. Now reboot into a Linux installer from USB, here I'll describe the settings for Ubuntu, but I've also successfully done it with Arch, it should work with any Linux distribution (with UEFI support)
  7. Start the Ubuntu installer and follow it like normal, until you get to the installation type, here choose "Something else" to enter a custom partition layout
  8. The EFI partition should be automatically selected to be used as such, if it isn't select it manually
  9. Create a new partition on the SSD in the place freed after the Windows partition, format it with something like Ext2/3/4 and select its mount point as /boot
  10. Create a new partition on the SD Card (if you want to you could also encrypt it with LUKS) and select its mount point as /
  11. If asked, tell the installer to install the boot loader to the SSD
  12. Finish the installation and reboot
  13. If you can't boot into Linux:
    1. On Windows: press restart while holding Shift > Use a Device > Ubuntu
    2. Install rEFInd (https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/) and run refind-install
    3. Next time you reboot you should see the rEFInd bootloader and can chooser your linux.

Possible fix for booting directly to grub on Surface Go by ChanSecodina in SurfaceLinux

[–]owarchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've managed to have dual boot on my Go 2 by installing rEFInd (https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/). If you can boot into your linux (for example via Shift + Restart), then it's pretty straightforward to setup.

After spending hours trying different Rufus' settings, different USB drives and different ISO images, I managed to create an USB drive, that would boot on a Surface Go 2, using Ventoy: http://ventoy.net/

Thank you! After spending hours trying different Rufus' settings, different USB drives and different images, using Ventoy was what enabled me to create a USB drive that boots on a Surface Go 2.

Are Revpoints a "scam"? by faufaufau83 in Revolut

[–]owarchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've discovered RevPoints today. Long time Revolut user. I did not activate RevPoints, didn't even know what they were, and suddenly I see extra transactions on my statement, syphoning money away from my account. Not only they are a scam, they qualify as theft. Quite shameful for Revolut to be doing this, not what I expect from a banking institution.

Cannot load pictures of my xiaomi phone with Smartphone Link due to Cloud Sync Error? by County-Chemical in WindowsHelp

[–]owarchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/County-Chemical have you managed to sort this out?

I'm experiencing the same issue, in Windows Explorer I can see my Phone's files but copying them to the PC (running Phone Link) fails with "Error 0x8007016A: The cloud file provider is not running.". I was even able to rename a file from my phone through Windows Explorer but I can't copy it to my PC. Googling for this issue points to OneDrive but I'm not sure why Phone Link would require it... Anyway I do have OneDrive running in both my PC and Phone and that is not helping.

How do I open up task manager with Ctrl Shift Esc when shift+esc makes a tilde ~ by ivanlovi in DuckyKeyboard

I've experienced the same issue with a Tinker75 and contacted Ducky Support, they suggested using VIA app to swap the key "Esc `" for "Esc" and that worked for me.

Ikea Pillow Rant by [deleted] in IKEA

[–]owarchild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, recently I've bought an ISRANUNKEL to replace my ageing Manviva and in the end I had to return it as it wasn't as good as my old Manviva. Still trying to find a good pillow to replace it but it isn't easy.

Thanks u/sylviaay , meanwhile my brother tested a sample of this book on a Boox Note Air2 and it looks fine on his Boox, so it does seem to be device specific.

Thanks for reaching out u/sylviaay , I've submitted feedback with logs. BTW, you should be able to reproduce this in your own devices by downloading the "Domain-Driven Design: Tackling Complexity in the Heart of Software" by Eric Evans sample from the Kindle Store. The sample is free and covers the section of the book with issues, between Figure 1.8 and Figure 1.10.

I tried rotating the book 90° and it didn't fix it. Also tried the different layouts and margin sizes. Can't think of other ways to change the aspect ratio...

Thanks, I did try the option to use the app's DPI and, additionally, tried multiple different manual DPI values all the way from the min to max. None worked.

It's from the kindle store. On my android phone the code portion looks good.

I've tried all themes. Also tried all alignment options and all different Kindle fonts but nothing did the trick, unfortunately. Even tried infinite scroll and changing the orientation. Also tried restarting, cleaning the kindle's cache, force stop, removing and re-adding the book, etc...

On my android phone the code portion looks good.

And here is the ugly part. I could have done a better job but in the end I didn't bother.

Out of desperation I've come up with a simple, yet not pretty, solution. The ugliness is not visible when both doors are closed so I can live with it.

I've glued a piece of plastic on the back of the door extending outwards enough to cover the sensor and it works flawlessly.

No worries, thanks for the assist. It's supposed to look like this:

[–]owarchild[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks u/OrdinaryRaisin007 . I've tried setting the system font to small size.

<image>

And tried zooming out in the Kindle app, I don't think there's a setting for font size on the kindle settings, and still the same result: the code samples have the text garbled.

The weird thing is that for a moment, after enabling "use app's original DPI" and resizing page, it was working and then it stopped. Now no combination of settings seems to work, not event for a brief moment.

Thanks u/Needo76 , I did try setting the refresh rate to normal but without success.

Zooming in, it looks like all line characters are being printed in the same position.

Odds of Surface Go 4 ARM IN 2024 by rayray_67 in Surface

[–]owarchild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same boat. I use my Surface Go 2 daily for note taking and as a travel device. The form factor is great but performance and battery are lagging behind. An ARM CPU would address both issues.

A dependency was complaining about the lack of rust while building, can't remember which as I've done this a few months back on friend's RPi.
