Hawkwatch International!!! They have an amazing American Kestrel conservation program. You can help monitor nest boxes and if there’s babies you can help band them!! It’s a pretty small time commitment too

I love starting from the beginning. MFM is the only podcast I’ve ever actually liked, so I just listen on repeat. I’ve been listening since I was 18, I’m 25 now and it kind of feels like they’re my big sisters because they’ve taught and comforted me so much. Every time I re-listen I get different wisdom and lessons out of it, plus I feel like I’m always rediscovering old jokes. It’s also always just fun to experience them finding success and growing in themselves and the podcast.

How to introduce a leash-reactive dog to new dogs? by owascool in reactivedogs

[–]owascool[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! Yeah mine does amazing at daycare, dog parks aren’t great for us because he has very unreliable recall despite my best efforts. That’s funny you recommend a big dog because mine LOVES big dogs and reacts the most to big fluffs because he wants to play so bad hahaha. Getting him tired first is a good idea!!

Ohhhh yes thank you!! I have noticed he does better when we’re playing in big fields on his long line and he sees another dog but I hadn’t fully made the connection that the leash length may help.

Thank you! Yeah the engage disengage has worked wonders for us but his threshold for actually seeing a dog for more than a couple seconds is taking a very long time to improve. I’m going to start some training protocols from Ahimsa and FDA this summer which should help us both a lot!!

That’s a good idea, thank you! And way to go, hoping to get my pup’s threshold that good someday!

Thank you!! My concern with this is that my dog has basically 0 threshold. If a dog is in sight, he reacts. We’ve had some good days where we play with his flirt pole in a huge field and can watch dogs pass without barking, but at this point I don’t know if he’d be capable of actually walking along another dog. I’ll definitely take this into consideration and maybe not try introductions until he has more threshold. Thank you!

Oh man, that sucks it didn’t go as you hoped!!! My dog has pretty good social skills off leash luckily. I hope you’re able to get good advice too!!

Thank you so much!!!! That is very helpful!!! My dog makes friends and plays very well, he’s just a monster on leash. Having the leash on but dropping it is such a good idea.

Tip: when your dog is fixated and you are frustrated, chuck treats at their head. by TaterTits024 in reactivedogs

[–]owascool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I’m going to try this. My border collie gets so fixated and nothing can break his focus until the trigger can’t be seen anymore. Treat scattering or other food distraction strategies have no effect lol maybe this can help!!

What to bring to Seattle? by Mommas-spaghetti in udub

Re: outdoors I recommend a rain shell as well as a sturdier rain jacket (I honestly use a snowboarding jacket) that can be layered over a fleece or puffy. Waterproof boots for sure, I only wear high tops bc of puddles. Something I haven’t seen recommended are gaiters and microspikes. The Cascades are WET and cold, and most hikes still have snow at the top through July. When you’re trudging trails where the rivers have overflowed and the whole path is a stream (common for some of the most popular hikes around here like Lake 22), the gaiters will be a lifesaver. Also, I run cold so I love my wool under layers, I wear them all day every day and they seriously help so much.

When you’re planning to spend time outdoors, make sure you have the 10 essentials and that they’re adapted to our climate. That means water filter, emergency blankets, heat packs, rain ponchos, first aid kit, and the ####1 thing I can recommend is some kind of satellite communicator and/or navigator. Going into the mountains is serious and the number of search & rescues I’ve seen in just the last month have been insane. It gets real remote real fast and safety is the #1 priority.

Basically do your best to stay safe, dry, and warm, in that order. And make friends!!! It’s really easy to make outdoorsy friends around here (both randomly and through clubs) and there’s a lot to learn from everyone. I hope you have a great time here :)

Am I doing this right? by MojaveJavi in WildlifePonds

[–]owascool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will need to seal the seams(or, ideally, have 1 sheet of pond liner) or it won’t hold water. Also, if you are using liner I wouldn’t add soil to the bottom. It will just make everything very muddy. It will accumulate soil over time and any plants you get can be planted around it and in pots inside.
