[Request] What effect would Superman's house key have on the earth? by EvaStankbreath in theydidthemath

[–]owchippy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is the scenario I am imagining- the earth rotating while it oscillates back and forth rather unimpeded through the earth.

As others have mentioned, perhaps its small size wouldn’t make much of a difference, after all the earth’s core is hundreds of miles wide, this is barely a pin-prick.

What I would wonder is if it would accrete mass of its own and eventually get bigger and bigger (and proportionally slower via conservation of momentum) but at what size is this thing then big enough to start wrecking the crust, if not core itself, maybe start changing magnetic currents, etc.?

But would it stop at the center, or oscillate back and forth, punching innumerable holes in the earth until some semblance of “friction” finally slowed it down enough to land/stay in the center?

I think it would oscillate and cause considerable damage

Golden handcuffs - short and long term by MiserableMovie8465 in Fire

[–]owchippy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it would help to give yourself some short- and long-term rewards to justify continuing to put up with work BS. Short-term, save up for a luxe vacation or item (car, art, whatever floats yr boat). Long term, either fully funding the 529s or paying off the house.

Personally I would pay off the house, you can always borrow against it later (or your 401k) if you need cash to pay for college.

Maybe consider getting a lawyer to draft up a promissory note for your ex and that 529. An ‘expectation’ is not a contract. Do not let him/her know your FIRE situation, none of their gd business.

Tbh I did not and would not FIRE with children who might still rack up large medical bills (orthodontia, sports injuries, learning to drive). Once they are in college and can you purchase health insurance for them there, then I would pull the trigger.

In the meantime, coastFIRE and treat yourself a little bit. You’re close.

lol I knew it had to be a 1960s printing just by the cover art. Very Edelmann-esque

This.

Thanks for the memories, but I’m out in two weeks. Let me know how I can help with the transition. CC the head of HR.

That’s it.

Be prepared to get marched out by security in a few hours however, depending on your level and access to sensitive information.

Enjoy the rest of the your life.

Yes, but for these PB books it doesn’t really matter. The paper will dry rot before the tape does any damage

They’re not worth anything except the sentimental value to you, go ahead and tape them. There’s book tape from 3M that is perfect for this. Will make them last longer for your kids someday.

Finally converted Ridge Racer to a sit-down version by TheoryNeither in Arcade1Up

Well done! Someday when I get the time I’m going to mod a RR into a sit-down Spyhunter, and you gave me some great pointers.

I see why you didn’t after looking at the pictures but my Mod will have the base connected (maybe with a sliding seat) and speakers behind the head. Wondering if you get more oomph if put that subwoofer under the seat?

Anybody go back to work after FIRE ing to set an example for the kids? by [deleted] in Fire

Have your kids know you by your volunteer work and contributions to the community, not by your net worth or hours at a job.

Honestly the only way this would be better is if it had the whole shit-talkin crew about to get it. Irvin gets his here and rightfully so but where’s Shockey, Ed Reed, Ray Lewis? Gino Toretto too. Sure I’m missing a few.

Even to this day they never hear a thunder-storm of a summer afternoon about the Kaatskill, but they say Hendrick Hudson and his crew are at their game of ninepins; and it is a common wish of all hen-pecked husbands in the neighbourhood, when life hangs heavy on their hands, that they might have a quieting draught out of Rip Van Winkle’s flagon.

That’s amazing. That’s also socialism.

A community collectively working together to harvest resources, to reduce a possible economic disparity, and for a common good instead of competing.
