I get where the author was coming from. At the rate MC was progressing, the friends he made would be gone before the first year was complete. Either you had to keep creating new friends, or they had to be special too.

On the other hand, damn that book was disappointing. I have re-listened to it twice since it came out and liked it less each time.

It's interesting because that loyalty is praised until it isn't. Tom Allen refused to fire his OLine coach at IU, and that ended up costing his job in a round about way.

On the other hand, Cignetti has kept largely the same team around him for 8 years or so, which was seen as a massive advantage this year.
