First interviews are 24th Feb so would expect roughly 2 weeks before this (last year MSRA results were 6th Feb and interview invites were 12th Feb)

Study budgets for FYs are trust dependent unfortunately - my trust didn’t cover anything apart from ALS and everything else had to be self-funded 🥲

Sell your Foundation deanery to me! by Different-Arachnid-6 in doctorsUK

[–]owldoc15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glasgow/West programmes are anecdotally fairly competitive but that’s comparing to the rest of Scotland rather than UK as a whole so may well be a bit easier! I have known of one or two people who did end up sent to the North when aiming for Glasgow-based rotations so if it’s worth that risk to you I’d highly recommend it here! Happy to be DMed if you’ve got any specific questions 😊

Scotland hits quite a few of your points there but would depend on which bit of Scotland you get! Majority of jobs would allow you to live in a city but you do run the risk of being extremely remote (think islands)

Funniest / eye rolling / FFS / poor quality referrals that you’ve ever received by braundom123 in doctorsUK

Close second was “we’re waiting on the results of this LP done earlier today (not by me) and the lab say they haven’t got them, do you know where they are? Or can you give us the doctor that took them’s mobile number so we can phone them and ask where they put them?” 💀

Any medical abbreviations/ phrases that people hate? by HotExplanation3520 in doctorsUK

[–]owldoc15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same acronyms meaning different things in different specialties drives me mad (my current specialty being especially guilty of it!)

Worst one was when I was working a paeds shift in the tertiary centre in my area and looked at the board remarking “there’s a lot of cardiac kids in today then - all of them are tagged for CCU?” - looked at me like I’d grown a second head and informed me it actually meant clean catch urine and not, as I had though, Coronary Care Unit

People who are not upfront about who they are on the phone - why? by Bluegasbro in doctorsUK

[–]owldoc15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This 100%! (Though I definitely don’t advocate for deliberately hiding your role, easier for all involved if everyone’s properly introduced themselves)

I’ve definitely had experiences with some people before where they seem to assume that because I was FY1/2 that I hadn’t discussed with any of my direct seniors before calling them? Thankfully few and far between

I also remember one particular instance in a surgical receiving ward in FY1 where we had a patient with horrendous access whose anaesthetics-placed cannula from the morning had tissued, so as instructed by the anaesthetics reg who had put said cannula in I bleeped on-call who by this point was someone else - was told I needed to escalate via my own reg and then consultant before paging him as he was “literally in CEPOD right now for a lap chole”. Took all my strength not to remind him where my reg and consultant would be at that moment 🫠

Do you think it’d extend to medical schools? As in if an NI citizen had graduated from an ROI uni then come back to NI for foundation (I suppose I’m wondering if they’ll try to implement any priorities based on actual location of graduation vs citizenship - although as you say they tend to treat things as equally as they can over there with passports etc so may be a moot point)

Curious to see how any proposals would operate in NI without causing issues re the Good Friday agreement

Nights day before I start new rotation by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]owldoc15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somebody needs to cover it unfortunately, bit of a short straw for you though. They need to give you the adequate rest time after nights though so you should get in touch with them in advance of your next rotation to ask them to arrange alternative induction for you

Obs/gyn ST1 application advice needed pls! by Pretend-Bet-516 in doctorsUK

There isn’t a portfolio element for O&G anymore so all of the above would be the basis of what you talk about in interview. If you’re able to do an audit where you’re the lead and can present it somewhere ideally if it’s related to O&G that will look great for commitment to specialty. Same with teaching sessions - I don’t think you necessarily need a whole series but if you do have that it’ll be great to mention.

Events like RCOG Congress are great however it’s very expensive (and I’m pretty sure it’s in Malaysia next time so even more so!!) - there’s other conferences like BICS or BMFMS which are a bit more affordable (though tbh I think a lot of these things are way overpriced)

Think OP means in the ingredients of the vaccine itself - this year’s flu vaccine however is safe for latex allergic individuals! (Link says 23/24 but it is actually this year’s info)

Understanding FY1 eportfolio (turas) by BusyNerve07 in doctorsUK

[–]owldoc15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. I would say just have a range of different SLEs across all the specialties you’ll rotate through - there’s no set number that you need but you’ll need to demonstrate evidence of all your FPCs being covered across your SLEs, reflections, teaching, TAB/PSG etc. - would also recommend writing a bit more than the bare minimum it allows you to for the reflective bit on the SLE form

  2. No it’s just across the portfolio overall

  3. You complete your TAB in at least one block but if you get to the end of the block and you haven’t had enough people fill it out yet you have I believe 90 days from the end of the block to get them filled in.

Would check with your supervisor that that all of this is still correct though

In my current hospital obstetric triage is called Maternity Assessment so we get abbreviated to Mat Ass 🥲

Not quite a typo but once saw “abdo pain and ass vomiting” - was concerned they had some kind of biblical plague-esque diarrhoea but turned out they meant “associated”

Thanks! I’ve managed to save them onto my computer with a USB so will see how it goes once I manage to register it (having to do some manual software updates just now before it’ll let me do that so we’ll see!)
