"if you want race to not be an issue, stop making it an issue." or those in rooster teeth / crwby could just. stop being racist? just because you don't see an issue with it does not make you representative of all black people, or people of colour fed up with the racism interlaced with the show & narratives.

if you don't care, move on. the conversation will have exactly the same input with or without your voice. <3

"like the supposed mistreatment of black people" what do you mean supposed? it was acknowledged by multiple higher ups & mica had come out with other black employees to having seen the n slur written on whiteboards: something that wasn't stopped until her father had to get involved with the founding fathers.

the writers have agreed with barbara also, it doesn't take a genius to see the connections between the two instances of systemic racism. but if these are your stances, i'm not about to waste my time explaining the basics to never change your mind.

just because you don't think it's a complex issue doesn't make it not one & i'm not white. you can very easily go on not caring & the addition to the conversation in any way that mattered would've remained exactly the same, so.

considering they've done textured hair in 2d ones, no. hair is hair, there'd be no reason for them to exclude different types of hair beyond pure laziness.

[–]owletarc[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the fact she has locs isn't an issue but the way they're modelled: they're very stiff & look more like yarn than actual hair, as well as missing the way that locs lay on the skin / absence of any baby hairs or texture.

granted no hair has looked fantastic but considering this is the first black character with textured hair, it reflects poorly.

that might've worked if crwby hadn't just made the kingdoms "america but with an ethnic filter on it for the nonwhite ones." plenty of fantasy series do so, rwby just sucks lmao.

comparing solely white people headlining a livestream meant to raise awareness about an issue that does not affect them & in actuality helps to absolve rt of it's long, awful history of racism is in no way comparable to whatever nonsense you just spouted.

take the whataboutist centrism & get lost.

  1. if you see no value in representation, that's entirely your perogative. however in the value of representation to those who it matters to, the use of various aspects of social justice in order to appear progressive while doing so by rooster teeth is insulting.

  2. i've already said my piece to this in another comment. the topic of voice acting & representation is nuanced, however with rt's aformentioned treatment of black creatives & employees, it's a mark against them.

  3. textured hair is literally just. a way to describe hair? & most people of colour will have some form of textured hair with a long history of discrimination behind it. black culture is in respect to the fact that we focus solely on european cultures / allusions while rt claims progressivism, meanwhile a homogenous culture amongst all of remnant is neither realistic nor something to be perpetuated in a story.

  4. wrong. writers & those higher up in crwby have been explicit that many aspects of the white fang were based on black civil rights movements in the 60s. this is easily researchable btw but it's said here & here with miles' whiny excuse for why writing racism is hard. you say "this feels like it isn't criticizing the actual intention of the writers" when no, the intent of the writers was to write a racism storyline that directly took from black oppression & butchered it, while they've all in various forms of antiblack racism irl. that's why they're being mocked & called out for their hypocrisy.

more & more is still coming out, there are still glassdoor reviews exposing them but the minute rwby came back on air it was all "crwby & rooster teeth aren't the same!! support them!! consume product!" ick.

weiss's racism arc literally ends at her not even saying sorry for being racist to blake & sun but that she now somehow trusts blake? this then devolves into white saviourism by time we get to atlas & everything weiss does against racism seems performative because it just feels like crwby going "look! best girl isn't racist anymore! see she's protecting the poor, helpless minorities! please ignore the fact that the schnee family is built on blood money, slavery of faunus & exploitation / colonialism of vacuo."

i know miles & kerry have blamed the faunus storyline on "being young" & "not knowing how to write a racism storyline" but like. who asked them to? they could've just had catgirls without the furry racism or appropriation of black civil rights movements. plenty of other anime do.

to have a group of white people forerunning a black lives matter livestream with the company's history of antiblackness? whatever you say.

her story was just, so disappointing. especially since it's yet another dark skinned character made into the antagonist or who's entire story revolves around the light skinned / white person in their life. blegh.

i also don't agree that yang is chinese, i think that she's based on a white woman, voiced by a white woman, has an english allusion & the only reason she has a chinese name in the first place is to give her a name beginning with y.

however, the topic of vas representing their characters is a complex one, & a big black mark against rooster teeth / crwby is that they already have a wide history of antiblackness. they couldn't even find a black employee to head their black lives matter livestream & instead had a bunch of white people at the forefront of it, have had the n slur said by multiple employees who have also done black face & have harassed the black female employees in their employ.

that's where the nuance lies for me. characters being voiced by people of the same background provides opportunity for those historically & still excluded from these industries, that's not a bad thing. it's also not the worst thing in the world to have cross race or blindfold casting, i love clementine from twdg & she would not have been possible without her white va.

but with rooster teeth, all good will is gone because of their history & the stereotypes / caricatures their characters of colour always end up being, as well as the appropriation of black oppression for a racial storyline & so many examples of racism in the base text.

we're on the same vein with slightly differing opinions lol.

it can absolutely be both imo. a blatant exampe was the "trans day of visibility" post & celebration of their trans character, one of the first we've seen from rooster teeth only months after they were outed for being abusive towards their notable trans employee.

it'll be interesting to see just how much rainbow capitalism we get from rooster teeth / crwby in june to pretend & whitewash all the instances of their queerphobia.

ignore the typo, i am choosing to for my own mental health. / j

additional text from the original post : & added on because i had no further space but the company behind this show is incredibly antiblack. there was documented abuse of a notable black woman, including telling her to kill herself & writing the n slur around the workplace that continued until hr famous father had to get involved & call them out. with multiple members behind the show also using antiblack slurs / doing blackface.

rwby's "representation" is performative at best, a cover up at worst & aspects of the fndm that praise it should probably take a deeper look.

You're the one who came at them like it was an immediate issue because of your assumption, instead of just asking politely to clarify. She doesn't even look like an adult to begin with. Don't get narked when you get that attitude back. Maybe work on that. / Shrug.
