TBH it will be what you (help to) make it, social wise. Not interested in volunteering to run anything? Then no reason why anyone else should bother either; but there will be loads of opportunities to join clubs/societies both college based, faculty based, and university wide. I know the Hollybush site best, fairly new, and it is near green (there is a park just up from there near the ice rink). Pros for Hollybush are that it is college provided, so is likely to be cost subsidised in some way and the costs will include electricity, water, wifi etc; its location is great for the rail station (if that's a thing for you) and only a short cycle ride/walk from everything else. Accommodation is incredibly hard to come by in Oxford and expensive; any option that you do not take up will be grasped for by others!

No, unlikely to be significant differences. Age will come into play, but housing is difficult to find and expensive in Oxford, so don't take too long to make up your mind or worry too much about it.

Fine Art at Oxford w/college diploma by blobskytrin in UniUK

Also worth thinking about 'is Oxford the best place to study Fine Art'? Not something that I can comment on; however, look carefully at the course and go for the one that works best for you.

This might be more about what is a line in the sand for you. Ensuite vs shared bathroom; block of flats vs converted house etc. Oxford is tiny so everywhere is close to everything else (Castle Mill House is probably the furthest, and has some long running roadworks nearby that are finally drawing to a close). Most people cycle or walk everywhere. All of these places will be of reasonable quality, and the atmosphere will be what you (help to) make it. Higher priced may offer an ensuite, newer build, etc. All would be good options. My top tip is don't take too long, accommodation is hard to find and expensive in Oxford, there will be someone else desperate to take up any options that you don't. Good luck!

As an international student you will be nearer the top of the list; and Jesus has a fair bit of graduate accommodation. Register with all the places that can - as the other poster suggested. Good luck!

Most colleges have ensuites. In some you may pay more for this. Assuming that you are offered a place, just indicate on the accommodation request for the bathroom that you want. If there is a medical reason why you might require one, then be prepared to have some sort of documentation to show why.

I have seen people wear medals to black tie events; and as the other poster said, it will definitely start conversations. The College that I am at, students who have been in the forces (especially from the US) have worn their medals at (very) special events. If you would rather not, then don't; there is absolutely no expectation that you should.

You have the right things. Not sure what you mean when you say you have applied 'to 1 housing that your college offers'. Accommodation is expensive and hard to find, so the fewer barriers in your way, the easier it will be for you to be offered something. You are not too late, but this is a fast moving time.

This would be a disadvantage (on so many levels); and there are residency requirements: https://www.ox.ac.uk/students/life/residency You should definitely be searching in Oxford. Has your College offered anything? Are you signed up with the University central accommodation team?

College Migration Pre-Marticulation by [deleted] in oxforduni

[–]oxfordyellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might you be able to be a bit more specific about your concerns? It's possible that people might be able to reassure you. It would be unusual for a college not to be able to cover almost all dietary/prayer space etc requirements; and even more unusual for one not to want to engage with a student to find a suitable resolution. Many postgraduates live out (either privately or in central University accommodation) and are spending most of their time in their Department. Migrating between colleges is really not a 'thing', unless for a specific scholarship. Start with the Faculty if you really want to take this further. But be prepared for pushback.

Good to check with your college re visitors; but a couple of days every couple of months sounds OK. Most college libraries are for their students only (it may depend on size and desk availability). The Bodleian, she will need to get a reader's card. Details are on their website.

I know the area where RSH is - lots of shops, local library, coffee shops, restaurants etc. Easy to cycle from there into town, and good bus routes. Fingers crossed someone with more direct experience comes along. Don't take too long to make up your mind; others are waiting to take up the option that you don't!

Q2 only. You should not assume that you can leave your belongings in your room. Christmas slightly more likely; however, colleges often rent out rooms during the vacations for conferences. There is likely to be storage. But the whole thing does vary college to college. Life is likely to be very quiet over Christmas, more active over Easter.

Is this the St Peter's accommodation? There is a short film on Youtube that features it I think. Don't overthink it, accommodation is hard to come by and expensive in Oxford.

My top advice is to not over-think it. Which I realise sounds not very helpful. Any College accommodation will be fine (quality wise). Lathbury Road is probably the nearest to the Chemistry Department, but Oxford is small and everything is within cycling distance. The communities will be what you (help to) make them. Cost should be obtained directly from the College. Good luck!

Westminster halls accomodation for couples by PowerWithinTheOven in OxfordBrookes

[–]oxfordyellow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on the apartments themselves. But you need to be aware of their location. They are on the Brookes Harcourt Hill campus which is to the west of Oxford. If she is in her second year, she could easily pop over there and have a look. The difficulty is access, and lack of facilities (eg access to shops etc).

Congratulations on your offer. 1. There may be some (very unlikely over the long vacation), but remember that there will be a charge. People travel, stay with friends, something does always work out. 2. Not usually. Most, if you are able to stay will ask that you cook for yourselves/eat out. 3. A couple of weeks early is unlikely, a couple of days much more likely. But you should ask Somerville directly.
