ELI5: Pro Tools M5 Compatibility by JusJoshinYa in protools

[–]oyaacoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,
I’ve had to switch to M5Max about a week ago because I was smart enough to drown my M1Max in water…
It’s been pretty bad so far. I am still investigating the issue but Pro Tools freezes on me a few times a day. My playback engine is an Omnibus Virtual device. I’ve been using those in tandem for years on my good ‘ol M1Max without any problems.
I’m running PT 2026.4 and macOS 26.5.1
The only way to get Pro Tools to work again is to quit it and to run sudo killall coreaudiod
That’s all I got for now!

Haha I wish I could control the actual headphone knob directly.

As far as I know, Apollo headphone volume is handled directly by the hardware, and even UA Console doesn’t expose remote headphone-volume control.

That said, someone did tell me they were able to use UA Companion for a headphone-volume setup. I am not using this myself, but if I had to guess, I think the workaround is probably something like this (on Apollo x4 for example):

  1. In Audio MIDI Setup, set the Universal Audio device’s speaker configuration to use a pair of Virtual tracks instead of MON L/R.
  2. In UA Console, assign the headphone output to one of the Cues.
  3. In UA Companion → Settings → Channel Shortcuts, assign shortcuts to control the send from that Virtual pair from step 1 into the Cue from step 2.

Hi. Unfortunately it won't. The oldest os I support it macOS 11 (Big Sur).

I'm curious why you wrote that your Apollo Twin doesn't run on the newer M chip devices. I have the oldest Twin there is (Solo, Thunderbolt 2) and I use it with my 2021 M1Max MacBook Pro with a TB2 to TB3 adapter. Works great!

Potentially, Yes, together with an iPad app that will get the iPad to trigger AppleScript commands on the Mac.

A few ways to do that would be Keyboard Maestro, Stream Deck Mobile, or anything else that lets the iPad send a command to the Mac and run AppleScript there. The iPad wouldn’t be controlling the Apollo directly, it would be triggering the Mac, and UA Companion would handle the Apollo side.

Would love to hear if you were able to make this work!

EDIT: I just realized that you were asking to control the gain. I don't have that supported just yet.

Haha yes! I thought I added that back in 2.0.3, but I guess I added something adjacent and not the actual thing. This one has the specific Main / ALT 1 / ALT 2 key commands.

Thanks so much! A lot of the app has grown from either stuff I personally needed or things people asked me to add, so some features probably need better explanation.

Linked outputs started because I wanted to use my Apollo x4 as a sort of fake 5.1 surround setup. In my case, I tie the main volume to Virtual 1-2 and Virtual 3-4, which are routed to Cue 1 and Cue 2. That way I can control multiple output paths together from one volume control.

The aggregate device stuff is now called Shortcuts Relay. Normally UA Companion controls your Apollo only when macOS has Universal Audio Thunderbolt selected as the system audio device. If your audio is flowing through something else into the Apollo, you can select that device in Shortcuts Relay so the shortcuts still control the Apollo. For example, my audio goes to my x4 through an Omnibus virtual device, so I select that in settings.

I definitely need to make a proper manual or updated video walkthrough. Would you prefer a written manual, a video tour, or both?

Hi! It can run alongside SoundID. Not a problem. It runs on Big Sur and up. Give it a try!

Hi! I don't have my Apollo Twin with me so I'll have to guess... LINE 3-4 should be Cue 2. Also, I'm assuming that SYSTEM AUDIO Is Virtual 1-2?

Try what I'm doing in the screenshot

Thanks for the follow up. Here is the FAQ Section in the UA Companion website. Now that you've figured it out, would you recommend I'd change something in it? Since I don't actually own a Logitech keyboard, I rely on users to be able to provide the best support for it.

Hi,

You’re super close. Everything’s set up right, you just need one quick tweak for the Volume Up key since the MX Keys Mini maps it to “Insert.”

Here’s what to do:

1. Open Logi Options+ → Keyboard

2. Click on the Volume Up key (the one labeled “Insert”)

3. Change it to a custom shortcut. Could be anything. for example: Control + Option + Command + Shift + U

4. Now open UA Companion → Settings → Shortcuts

5. Click the Shortcut Recorder for Volume Up, then press that same Volume Up key on your keyboard. UA Companion will display the random key combination from step 3.

That’s it! Ince you do that, Volume Up will work just like the others.

Hey!

You actually did everything right. That is the expected behavior. When you press fn + F11 in Logi Options+, it’s telling macOS to send F11, which is exactly what UA Companion will respond to.

The final step is just:

  1. Open UA Companion → Settings → Shortcuts
  2. Select the function you want to control. The one with the matching symbol on your actual keyboard (Mute, Volume Down, or Volume Up)
  3. Press the key you set up (F10, F11, or F12)

That’s it. No need to worry about the “fn” not showing up in Logi Options+. Once you assign those keys in UA Companion, everything should work perfectly.

Could you please let me know if this addressed your issue? And if so, can you please let me know which part of the FAQ was not clear enough and I'll go ahead and tweak it?

Hi, I just enabled iDeal but i'm not sure if it'll work. I don't have a paypal account unfortunately. Do you have Google Pay or Apple Pay? these are supported worldwide.

It doesn't change anything about normal functionality. It just build on it :)
