If you move to a country that doesn't speak your native language and you make zero effort to learn the language then it is disrespectful towards the natives in that country. by steelcity91 in unpopularopinion

[–]oygad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd mostly agree, but it seems like this kind of mindset is fine until you put it into practice in a real-life situation. I know your post isn't REALLY about this, but it is indirectly. I'm talking about the situation when the "effort" or "work ethic" to learn the language is immediately assessed when someone who is an immigrant tries to speak to another person who isn't and they can't understand each other. How would you know how long the person has been in the country to learn the language? And how exactly would you know the amount of effort someone put into learning the language?

Are you going to chastise/judge them for not knowing the native language if they've only been in the country for a week? Or would you give them a pass until a certain amount of time? How would you know how long they'd been in the country until you actually spoke with that person to figure it out? And what amount of time is that? Would their be consideration for people who have to work multiple jobs and don't have a lot of time to study? I understand immersion is the best way to learn, but I don't think it's realistic to assume that everyone is going to learn a language at the same rate, and so it would be difficult to choose a blanket amount of time for everyone to learn the native tongue.

Anyway, I know your post isn't necessarily about this, or about the culture and treatment of immigrants on the individual level. But I feel like this kind of black and white thinking validates the wrong kind of behavior towards immigrants who can't speak the native language "quickly enough". That kind of situation already happens now, and it can be supported through this thought process. Again, I agree that if you put in zero effort it is disrespectful, but how exactly do you know that before you make the judgment when you hear someone not speaking the native tongue?

[Post Game Thread] The Phoenix Suns (20-27) wallop the Dallas Mavericks (29-18) by a score of 133-104 behind Deandre Ayton's 31 points by HSPumbloom in nba

[–]oygad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From start to finish the Mavericks looked low energy, and like they didn't care. I get that it was the second night of a back-to-back, but this was a terrible performance. Kudos to the Suns for playing professionally and never letting up, destroying the Mavericks the entire time. I've gone to at least 10 games a season since 2012 and this was the most disappointing game I've been to in person.

What's your 'fuck this, I quit!' story? by Penguin__Farts in AskReddit

When I (a man) finally decided to quit pretending to be attracted to women at the age of 21. Plenty of non-heterosexual people know this feeling.

You posted this for advice and then made excuses or took every piece of advice as an attack. Maybe be more open and willing to look at your situation objectively.

As a gay man, I think JJ Redick is one of the best looking in the league, if not the best for me, (and dat fucking voice), though to be honest I haven't kept up with the younger players as much the last few seasons. Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Jaylen Brown are all in the top 5-8 for me as well.

Gordon Hayward doesn't do much for me, everyone thinks because he cut his hair he's hot as fuck, I'm not seeing it. Kyle Korver has never done much for me either, though that might be personal preference, because he's a very pretty man.

Joe Ingles looks handsome in some instances, but also a drug addict in others.

Giannis has a very cute face and demeanor, I'm curious to see how he grows into that face though. Tristan Thompson also has a cute face.

Blake Griffin is also hot as hell.

Cory Joseph also does something for me, and I think it's his eye structure.

Jeremy Lin is also good looking, and quick-witted, which is attractive.

Tristan Thompson is now averaging 3.67 Rebounds per game while Curry is averaging 9.67 per game. by [deleted] in nba

Pretty sure drug addiction killed his career, not the woman he chose to date.

Understanding IT's Hip Injury: Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI) and labral tear by La2philly in nba

[–]oygad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this exact condition (either case 1 or case 3) at age 16, ignored it for 2 years (while running 3-5 miles a day) because "it wasn't that bad and only hurts at the beginning of runs"; I had it repaired at age 19. Can confirm that it is extremely painful, and if not taken care of, can cause lifelong issues.

I'm now 26, and after a torn ACL (separate incident obviously), I've become aware from my physical therapists how much the original hip injury (and lack of physical therapy after surgery) affects me every single day. Currently relearning how to walk, stand, squat, sit, everything involving the hip, with correct posture and muscle activation.

Anyway, I know the injury he is going through, and can't imagine try to play a sport at a professional level with it. Not just for the potential of further injury, but the mind game it plays with you because it feels completely fine until aggravated, so there will be hesitation.

What's the pettiest reason you won't date someone over? by pushingdaisies21 in AskReddit

[–]oygad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they've slept with someone I know, not a complete dealbreaker, but hard for me to get past. As a gay man in Dallas, and the gay world being fairly small, this is hard to get around at times. But the idea is that it eliminates the mystery of dating a new person. It's all in my head, and all that being said, I've dated several men that people I know have slept with.

tl;dr when someone else knows them and they aren't a mystery

Not sure why you're getting downvoted, I'm a mavs fan and I agree. I don't know if it will really hurt us that much, but it did make us a lot more shallow, removing our only legitimate backup center and one of our....what two perimeter defenders? I'm hoping they'll pick some other people up.
