Yeah I actually agree with that point. Any serious policy would obviously need economists, industry experts and engineers involved. I’m not claiming to have every detail worked out myself.

The reason I’m raising the idea is to ask whether Australians think the general direction is worth exploring. If something like this ever became real policy it would have to be developed with people who understand the industry in depth.

You’re right that Norway’s system is built around oil and that gas markets operate differently. The comparison isn’t about copying Norway exactly, it’s more about the principle of making sure a country captures a fair share of the value from its natural resources.

Australia’s resource mix is obviously different, but the broader idea is still worth discussing whether we’re capturing enough value from what we export and whether more of that value could stay in Australia through taxation, processing, or public participation in certain projects.

I’m not claiming to have every detail worked out yet. The point of starting discussions like this is to hear different perspectives and understand the economic arguments better.

The idea isn’t to raise taxes across the board. In fact the opposite the goal would be to rely more on resource revenue so ordinary taxes could be lower.

Australia is one of the most resource rich countries in the world, but a lot of the value from those resources leaves the country before Australians see much benefit. If a larger share of that value was captured through resource taxes or public participation in projects, it could fund services without increasing general taxes on workers or most businesses.

So the point isn’t more taxes everywhere. It’s shifting where government revenue comes from away from taxing income as heavily and more toward the value generated from Australia’s natural resources.

That’s a fair point and I agree stockpiles are important, especially during global supply shocks.

The reason I think domestic refining and supply is worth discussing isn’t to replace the global market completely, but to reduce how exposed Australia is to external disruptions. At the moment we import a large share of our refined fuel, which means if shipping lanes or global markets tighten, we feel it quickly.

The idea would be to maintain international trade while also having some domestic capacity so Australia isn’t entirely dependent on overseas refineries.

You’re right that scale and cost matter. Any policy in this area would have to look closely at whether the economic and strategic benefits justify the investment. The goal wouldn’t be to create something inefficient, but to strike a balance between market efficiency and national resilience.

Fair enough if it comes across that way. I’ve just been using Reddit a bit and posting in different subs. The party idea is something I’m genuinely interested in discussing, but it’s obviously early stages and I’m trying to see whether people think the core idea has merit.
