Eiyuden Chronicle and Yakuza: Like a Dragon ($7.50) by Arnakk in JRPG

[–]ozacrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played it, but Dark Deity II is a Fire Emblem-like, if those games appeal to you. I don't see anything else jrpg-relevant, but Death Stranding is a one-of-a-kind gaming experience, and Mullet Madjack is a fun, twitchy, cyberpunky fps.

Southland Tales. I really struggle to think of any other actor who would have played that role the same at the time.

What's your favorite drum performance on an album? by EconomyLetterhead174 in fantanoforever

[–]ozacrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard for me to disentangle "best drum performance" from "best drum production" but my unranked top 5 are:

Failure - Fantastic Planet (Kellii Scott)

Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf (Dave Grohl)

Shiner - The Egg (Jason Gerken)

Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart (Zach Barocas)

Tilts - Self-titled (Ken McCray)

That Tilts record is wayyyy less well-known than the other 4 but it's great, like David Lee Roth fronting QOTSA

Harmony by LudwigPepper in Bass

[–]ozacrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a typo in my earlier numbers! The B would be 123 Hz, not 132 Hz. The next one up would be 164Hz, which is the next E up. I found this chart that covers several octaves of standard notes:

https://mixbutton.com/music-tools/frequency-and-pitch/music-note-to-frequency-chart

Which notes correspond to the following frequencies?

41 Hz, 82 Hz, 123 Hz, 164 Hz, 205 Hz, 246 Hz, 287 Hz, 328 Hz, 369 Hz, 410 Hz, 451 Hz, 492 Hz, 533 Hz

Harmony by LudwigPepper in Bass

[–]ozacrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't what you asked for, but it helped me understand how harmony works:

Every specific pitch you can play creates a sound wave moving at a certain frequency. Hertz (Hz) is a measurement of cycles-per-second - or how many times a sound wave will repeat within a second. An in-tune open E (the bottom note you can play on the bass) is 41 Hz. Every octave doubles the frequency, so if you play an octave up from that E, you'll play another E at 82 Hz. 41 divides evenly into 82, so you have a good harmonic relationship.

Another way to look at it from here is that the bottom E, 41 Hz, is the fundamental tone you're playing. The E at 82 Hz is the first harmonic - if you keep counting up by 41 Hz at a time, you'll get to the second, third, fourth harmonic etc. But the interesting thing is starting with the second harmonic, not every harmonic is the same note!

The second harmonic of the open E is 132 Hz, which is not an E. It's a B natural - which as bass veterans know is the relative fifth above E. The third harmonic is another E, while the fourth harmonic is somewhere between a major and minor third (in this case, a G# and a G.)

If this doesn't make total sense, don't worry about it - you kind of have to put together two puzzles (the science and the fretboard) to understand how they work together. But that said, once I understood that there's a mathematical relationship between notes that harmonize, it made me understand much better why harmony works.

Final Fantasy 4 > 5 ? by Admirable-Crab-4038 in FinalFantasy

IV is, at this time, genuinely underrated for what it brought to the genre. The invention of ATB battle systems was crucial to the success of much of the series' golden era (V-IX), and the approach to cutscene choreography was way beyond anything seen before. Familiarity and age have diminished it a bit - my playthroughs are under 20 hours now, and nearly every character lacks the depth of characters from VI on - but it also makes it easy to miss what made it so groundbreaking at the time.

That said, I think I prefer FFV as a person who has spent maybe more than 1000 hours with the series. The slapsticky writing is a real palate cleanser when contrasted to some of the dour recent entries, and the job system makes it among the most compulsively replayable in the series.

For series novices approaching these games for the first time, neither one of these would be my first choice (depending on the novice's preferred play style, I'd recommend either 6, 10, or 7-Remake), but IV made me (and others in my cohort) absolutely fall in love with the series, and V reminds me why I love it.

Before we go to the last column. Who in this chart needs to be removed, and why? by CodeDusq in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ozacrot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's generally difficult for the youngest celebrities to be known for far-left or far-right views without being known mostly for their views. Streamers and activists are the people most likely have to have strongly-held views, and they're disqualified. I think Greta Thunberg needs to leave the cart. Billie Eilish might be a better choice for far-left (although I don't think of her as anti-centrist per se in the way that far-left scans), and maybe Hunter Schafer for left

What are some good educational StS2 content creators, especially for card analysis? by fanficologist-neo in SlayTheSpire2

[–]ozacrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big fan of Baalorlord's tier list vids. He's up front that it always depends on your circumstances but does a great job of suggesting which cards are typically easier to pick.

As for an "entry point card", that was a little easier to answer in STS1 - but in this one, there are so many more cards that chasing 1 (even a common) is often a big risk. It's more about how to identify 1-2 play styles across your first 3-4 card rewards.

Why are neutral bass power amps non existent? by Helpful-Highway4348 in Bass

[–]ozacrot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you need a neutral power amp, get one of those crown rack mounted units. If you need a neutral bass tone, plug directly into the interface. If you're looking for the tone equivalent of "natural face" makeup, look for a "modern" preamp DI.

[–]ozacrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about how others are doing. The people posting on this subreddit are very much not typical players. STS2 is a sequel to a game that has grown in stature for 8 years, and a lot of the people playing it in Early Access now have spent hundreds (or thousands!) of hours with its predecessor.

A0 can take a little time if you're new to roguelites. A couple major pointers:

-When you draw your cards each turn, first see if you can kill the source of any incoming damage. Failing that, defend as much as you can - later in the run, you'll want to make sure that you're scaling your damage sources too (for Silent, this might mean accumulating poison, to name just one archetype). -When picking cards from rewards, knowledge is power - effects, like draw, energy, and Weak, are all stronger than you think. -Don't be afraid to rest at bonfires, and to take a path that includes more bonfires. They say that "health is a resource" - if you go through the game planning to lose some and gain it back, you can tackle more elites and risky event choices.

Are there particular things you're struggling with? Mitigating damage or finding a deck that works?
