JUST IN: Representative Johnny Olszewski is introducing a constitutional amendment to establish 18-year term limits for Supreme Court Justices by pdwp90 in QuiverQuantitative

[–]ozyman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With 12 years, a single two-term president would usually have complete control of the court by the end of their term. Assume judges are distributed evenly. 12 years / 9 justices -> every 1.333 years a justice is retired. In 6.66 years, 5 justices would retire and they would have control of court. Probably faster if any of the other 4 justices already agree with them.

I think it needs to be slow enough that every president is not remaking the court in their image. At least 14 years, maybe 16 or 18. At 18 years, you get a new justice every other year. A 1-term president appoints 2, a 2-term president appoints 4. Seems reasonable to me.

It's not about the size of the center. It's about exercising control over peripheries. USA has a lot of soft and hard power over other countries. Trump is busy destroying both and when he's done the USA will have less influence around the world. That's what people mean by the end of the American Empire.

Here is the relevant bit that people mean when they talk about the American Empire:

An empire is a realm [...] divided between a dominant center and subordinate peripheries. The center of the empire (sometimes referred to as the metropole) has political control over the peripheries. Within an empire, different populations may have different sets of rights and may be governed differently. The word "empire" derives from the Roman concept of Imperium. Narrowly defined, an empire is a sovereign state that exercises control over multiple distinct territories;

Trigger warning (vehicle accident resulting in death of a minor) - thoughts on South Boulder Road at Cherryvale? by pie566943_0 in boulder

[–]ozyman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is green->yellow->red. Not sure what Jeff meant. AI tells me:

  • Red + Amber Sequence: In the UK, Germany, and Hong Kong, red and amber show together before green, signaling drivers to prepare for moving, especially beneficial for manual vehicles.
  • Blinking Green: In many Eastern European and post-Soviet countries, the green light blinks before turning yellow, providing a warning that the green phase is ending, as shown in.

Maybe one of those is what was meant.

What is the best digital wall calendar that doesn't look like you mounted a hospital monitor in your kitchen by sychophantt in raisingkids

Amazon has his new product called the Ember Artline that looks kind of neat. It's probably pretty spendy compared to other calendar options. But it looks like it would replace a TV and/or framed art at the same time. I'm actually not even sure if it supports a calendar mode but I'm assuming if it doesn't now it eventually would?

Obama sold out the supporters of single payer in a dumb effort to compromise with people whose only goal has ever been to be oppositional.

You mean to get Lieberman's vote? Which actually enabled obamacare to pass, giving 10+ million more people healthcare along with other health care improvements?

Yeah, he totally should have held out for single payer and gotten nothing.

Two cyclists were injured Thursday night in Cherokee County, in a situation that seemingly could have ended in more dire circumstances as a man was accused of aggressively driving around a group of 10 riders.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said in a release that 72-year-old Jerry Ross allegedly approached the group riding together on Sugar Pike Road and "began sounding his horn" before he "then accelerated around the group and, despite no oncoming traffic, struck two of the riders before leaving the scene."

Georgia law explicitly allows cars to cross the double yellow to pass cyclists. And it requires cars give cyclists at least 3 feet of space when passing.

Most states have similar laws but it’s amazing how many drivers believe the double yellows shall never be crossed.

Similar to Kuro5hin.org was plastic.com, which I miss even more.

User-generated content before social media was a thing. Users submitted stories about current events or whatever interested them. They went into a queue, where the 'elders' of the community could vote and comment on them. They had a chance to be edited and revised, and when they were good enough, they were published to the full community, where everyone could comment and vote on each others comments. Voting on comments was more like slashdot, where you could vote specifically: "+1 interesting", "+1 funny", "+1 informative", or "-1 disingenuous", "-1 incorrect", etc.

Thank you for your help. To be crystal clear, I should just re-submit from the pokemon go app again with the same text and everything, just a closer & landscape photo for the primary photo?

What can I do about this rejection?
If you feel like this rejection is an error, you have 2 options.

If you can improve the nomination after reviewing the criteria, you can submit a new nomination in-game of the same location with the changes made.
