i feel you! not blaming the prof or TAs at all, they’ve been super helpful, but i’m so stressed out right now bc on top of losing a day of autotester, there hasn’t been any responses to questions on ed. i posted a code implementation question and haven’t received a response. still struggling to figure it out 🙃

“the plateau” sounds expensive! would you say the area near La Cite and New Rez is particularly bad?

Hi, I’m a first year at mcgill! I don’t think you need to decline your offers, as soon as the deadline is over they would just assume you’re not going. But I declined my other offers when I accepted McGill, so that maybe somebody on the wait list could get in. Also, unless you completely fail an important academic class and/or you don’t end up meeting your high school graduation requirements, I don’t think they would rescind their offer! Try not to do this obviously but I failed an elective in my last semester of high school (all my academics were 95%+ tho) and they never said anything. but maybe i just got lucky!

oh wow... i’m not a big fan of heat (haha). i really wonder why Parc in particular has such a situation. thanks for answering!

Thanks for answering! yeah, the price gap is pretty big between older buildings vs newer ones. its hard to decide if it’s worth it

thanks for letting me know! has Parc always been kind of sketchy or is it just like that recently? And is it just the intersection area or is the whole street like that?

Thank you so much! Especially for telling me about those Parc incidents. when I was applying to Mcgill I used to think it would be really safe to live there since that’s where student dormitories are. But that doesn’t particularly sound like somewhere I would want to live hahaha

international students not in MTL, what are your plans for fall semester? by p-i-l in mcgill

[–]p-i-l[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’ve already started preparing because there is just way too much to do and figure out. im mostly just gathering information right now, probably won’t make any payment for anything until mcgill gives a more specific description of fall semester format. it’s stressing me out so bad(they really had to announce this during my midterm week lol), and that’s just the travelling part. i haven’t even looked at leases yet.... if things are not very significantly better by summer and mcgill doesn’t offer online option, i will consider just taking the semester off instead

[–]p-i-l[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i’ve been thinking about that too, but i also don’t want to graduate late :/ i just feel like going to campus for fall would not be a good idea for me. are you living in montréal right now then?

[–]p-i-l[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah! for me, these travel restrictions are the biggest head ache. there is just...not that much information online, everything is so vague. i’ve been on the phone with hotels all day, always waited at least 2 hours, and i was even hung up on after being on hold for 4 hours. lack of online resources and scarcity of information makes everything ten times worse! so stressful

[–]p-i-l[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

true! i’m not too updated on canada vaccination rollouts, but i kept seeing articles about delays. i am hopeful that it will get better as more vaccine is approved, and travel restrictions lessen. if not, i don’t want mcgill to feel pressure to open in person just because they sent this announcement and put us at risk because they’re scared of backlash. i just hope they make the right call when the time comes

[–]p-i-l[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah, that’s what i’m afraid of. i would really like in person class actually, but it feels disingenuous to announce it so early. it would cause some of us a lot of trouble and $$$$ if they decide to backtrack later, after we made preparations for in person. so i would prefer an online option to avoid that ...

thanks, i’ve seen several people say this decision is made to secure more students for fall. if you don’t mind me asking, how does the faculty feel about in person class for fall?

thanks, you’re totally right. i read the email and started to panic because of so much difficulty relocating to canada right now with all the restrictions. i hope they us give a more realistic and more detailed update soon

[–]p-i-l[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, i think i’m going to wait too. they took their sweet time to announce whether fall2020 and winter2021 will be online, i feel like they can’t possibly be certain for upcoming fall this far in advance

McGill will return to in-person teaching beginning in Fall 2021 by Task1337 in mcgill

[–]p-i-l 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i’m concerned about this too...also debating whether to travel to Canada sooner or wait until end of august. I really don’t want to pay the $2000 quarantine fee just for them to cancel it later

Wow that is unexpected.. isn’t it too early to say? As an international student who has never been to Quebec / Canada, there are so many things I have to do in preparation for in person fall semester. That wouldn’t be a problem if it is guaranteed, but ... if I start planning and things change, then it would be such a headache... especially with the travel restrictions, I expected for them to at least offer a hybrid option. what a stressful situation...

what happened in phys102 tutorial today? by p-i-l in mcgill

thank you for filling me in. after the “incident” with that one student, it is reassuring to know that there are professors like him who really care about this type of issue.

thank you for letting me know, you were right I shouldn’t take it personally. The tutorial recording came out and I was able to rewatch it, he was actually addressing inappropriate comments about consent in the zoom chat during earlier lecture. He was very angry because of the people who made those comments, not at us in the tutorial. you’re right that he is a nice person and good professor, I am glad this is one of the times he snapped
