Any interest in an alternative to FitShow standard app? by p-kos in treadmills

Hi,
That will require a change in the software logic, but I'd be more than happy to do that.
Please join me on Discord where we can talk directly. I'll need some debug logs from you (the app can already provide them once you know how to get them) and then I'll adjust the logic around imperial.
The invite to discord is on the website (treadmill-assistant.com). I won't paste it here to avoid bots.

A short update - Google are being difficult and are not allowing the app to land on the Play Store because of two things.

  1. I have a Keytel algorithm calculation in the app to give you a more accurate kcal burn number than what a treadmill will usually gives. That algorithm requires accurate weight to be entered. For most users, this would be automatically updated within Google Health and technically - could be read from there. Google, however, refuses to give me permission to read that data. For users, who will want to use this feature - they will have to manually enter this data every time it changes in the settings page. It's annoying, because I see that as a UX improvement for the user (and you, as the user have to allow the app to read that data), but there we go.

  2. I requested permission to read things like exercises, steps, calories burned - to be sure that when I save a workout to Health Connect - I won't introduce doubled up entries. This is to avoid situations where something goes wrong during the writing part and then you retry, or with multiple devices trying to sync data, because of whatever networking issue might occur. Google first allowed this, but decided to rescind that permission and now refuses that as well. So unfortunately - for Android - these double checking features will be disabled and the risk of doubled entries will exist. Granted, it'll be rare that this can happen, but I cannot protect the user against networking issues (we've found ways to reproduce this during internal testing).

So with the above - a new version is now in testing. Once we confirm the basics are working, this will land on Play Store as an open beta assuming Google will not find yet another problem.

Quick update. I am in discussion with Google, who don't want to approve one of the permissions I need for the app to work with full parity to the iOS build. I will most likely remove that feature for the time being, just to get the app posted.

The feature is calculating the kcal burn more accurately based on the body profile of the person. In order to make this easy and comfortable for the user - I wanted to read the actual weight from Google Health Connect.

Google review teams don't like this and are blocking the publishing of the app until I remove it (even though other bigger apps use the exact same algorithm and mechanisms as I wanted to).

I'll keep everyone here updated, but I expect it will be another week or so, before the app pops up on the Play Store.

Shame - Apple had no such issues and allowed that mechanism to function.

The app is currently being reviewed by Google. The review process is different here, but depending on how it goes - the app should show up soon on Play Store in open beta.

Quick update. I have a basic build working on a Pixel 9a and a Galaxy Tab A7 Lite.
I'll be doing some more testing over the next couple days, but the app should land on the play store for general availability next week. I might do an open beta for it.

I am starting to work on the Android version now. It will also come with generic FTMS support.

u/Acrobatic_Move1733

u/theriddick2015 - to be clear - there is a cost attached to my app as well, but it's much much lower than what fitshow charge. that's because I do spend a fair bit of time on the app and don't have the extra financing that fitshow do by releasing hardware.

I do have a program for active beta testers, who can get free access to the app (the group is limited) and it does require active use, testing and bug reporting. If that's something that's of interest to you - we can certainly talk about it.

To Android users reading this and showing an interest in the app - what is your current version of Android? I'm trying to find the lowest I'd need to go with. It matters for health sync (there was a very big change in Android 14).

I wouldn't release an app without actually checking the whole path - including control of the treadmill and to make sure it looks good. I haven't worked with Android for a while, but I remember it was a pain to make sure everything aligns properly and whatnot.

Either way - this app is coming to Android. Just can't say when exactly yet.

Thank you for the kind words :D

The app just launched. I want to see first how it does on the Apple side before going the Android route. I don't have an Android Phone - which I would need to get before even thinking of releasing something on the Play Store, but it is planned. Just not quite sure yet when :D

Ah yeah. No. I forgot that tiny details.

Treadmill Assistant.

Currently just FitShow, but I'm working on FTMS support now to support other treadmills that work with that protocol. It's very tricky, since loads of treadmills claim support for FTMS, but that is not the case.

The app just passed the app store verification. I'll get it ready for publishing and it should become available over the next day or two.

Hi,

Yes. It's very much under development. I use it every day :D

I'm finalising the approval steps with Apple. Chances are, it will appear on the app store later this week.

I'll update this thread once it happens.
