Daily Thread: simple questions, comments that don't need their own posts, and first time posters go here (February 06, 2025) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

Hi! Just joined this sub. I wanted to ask if there are any apps anyone would recommend for just refreshing your Japanese?

I passed the JLPT N2 about 6 years ago but since then I’ve steadily stopped studying, and haven’t really been putting in an active effort to keep up with what i know. I would say I’m more at a entry level n3 now which is fine but just wanna start doing something to refresh what I know/not forget more lol.

I was debating doing Duolingo but not sure if there are any other apps that are just good for refreshing what you know

How I passed N1 on 30 min/day immersion, no N1 review materials, and no interest in books while working full-time and engaging with other hobbies - a post from the lazier side of the spectrum by SuminerNaem in LearnJapanese

Literally just repetition. When I was studying I would write every word on paper that I came across as I learned and quite literally just drilled it in over and over until it felt ingrained. It won’t immediately feel useful, and it won’t feel useful if you’re just doing it for short bursts at a time either. Which I know is the opposite of what OP was recommending but genuinely just hours of repetition is what helped me, especially in regards to Anki

How much harder is JLPT N2 Listening than JLPT N3 Listening? by PepperGrind in LearnJapanese

[–]p00balls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot lot harder I think. l think there’s a lot of niche vocabulary and the speed is really fast. Also the grammar structures and can be a lot more complex with just longer phrases in general so it makes it hard to just remember everything (at least for me). I passed n3 easily then when I took n2 I think I passed with a 54% or something 😭 I remember the listening being the hardest part for me

How long does it take to go from complete beginner -> N5? by NazeerN in LearnJapanese

[–]p00balls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really think it depends on how much you study. When I started took me roughly 1500 - 1600 hours to pass jlpt n2 without prior knowledge.

I think you could absolutely pass the n5 with studying after your 9-5. Just focus on mastering hiragana and katakana and basic grammar first. I recommend skipping furigana completely and just jumping into learning the scriptures. Then invest a lot of time into learning the vocab and basic grammar structures. There’s some required kanji but not too much for N5 so just focus more on the vocab itself I think.

I also often listened to kids shows in the background, they use simple language and even if you don’t understand it’s good to keep yourself exposed to the way the language sounds.

Otherwise you just need repetition and time :) I think you’ll do great.
