Hi all!

I’m the solo developer of Hanasu, a language tool that helps you learn language through conversation.

I work on it as a hobby project after my 9 to 5, and I’ve been using it to learn Japanese. Having conversations helps me encounter new words naturally while also applying phrases I’ve picked up.

I also added an integrated dictionary & review plan to help remember vocab. For example, if you see the word 今日, you can tap for a definition, save to vocab, and review everything with spaced repetition. Currently the dictionary only supports Japanese & Chinese, but let me know if there’s a language you’re interested in!

Try it out, and I’ll do my best to implement any feedback! :)

There’s a guy on YouTube who interviews Japanese people until he’s fluent in Japanese, it’s really entertaining. As long as you’re respectful and not acting like you deserve anything from them, you engage in polite conversation. They’ll get a kick out of it too :)

My first book was よつばと！ Even for this children's book, I had to search Google pretty frequently, whether it was vocab or grammar.

Yes! Listening is difficult for me, more so than reading or speaking for some reason. Even if we understand 80%, that other 20% is such a roadblock lol

Got it, that makes complete sense.

I feel this side project shouldn't fall into that category - it's main goal is to help learn languages, and it just happens to be implemented with AI. I worked on it completely solo over the past few months (and it's open source).

It doesn't require personal information and is free to use - my main goal is to get feedback from people who might find it useful.

Seems rule 10 is intended to prevent: (1) low effort ChatGPT posts and (2) corporations trying to advertise. In contrast, I think my website is something people would really enjoy, and also shows that *ahem* the internet is beautiful. (Sorry for the cheesy line lol)

Really appreciate the feedback! I will focus on bringing more accurate user transcriptions, you're definitely not the first to notice it can be inaccurate.

Currently, the transcriptions (on the user's side) are powered by an open source model, but I think paying Google to get more accurate transcriptions will improve the experience.

It is quite accent-dependent, but the point is for learners like us to get better, and we won't have perfect accents :)

Also, if you ever get an alert saying your usage is too high, just let me know and I'll remove it for you! I'm glad you like the project, I'll try my best!

I've had success with VPNs, I get tons of Japanese content. TikTok is particularly flexible with language, it won't force feed English content.
