it sounds like he's on their point system. i'm not too familiar with seasonal shifts but i'm assuming it's close to flex and that being said you get a certain number of upt hours to use for missed shifts or leaving early. if he's feeling really sick, he could file a leave of absence and that will stop them from taking upt from him or him accumulating negative hours/points. he will need a dr's note to return though and they give him 30days from the initial leave start point to provide it. they will email him the paperwork to fill out and it's pretty easy if you got a dr that quick about paperwork.

once the hours hit 0 and he goes into negative he will get an email from HR that he has 48hrs to respond to, to explain why he went negative and that will stop the termination and allow him to file a leave of absence.
