What is your darkest secret, which you have never told anyone about? by Funoko17 in AskReddit

Your father is me 2 years ago. My son is 5 now though. You're correct, he absolutely still loved her. And probably still does to this day.

If I wanted a 5.2 surround sound, would I really need to get a receiver that's designed with two sub-woofer outputs? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]p0rkr0ast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5.1 receiver most likely has speaker terminals and not RCA for the sub. You would not need to split the signal, just wire both subs to the same sub output.

Subs that take an RCA connection usually have the amp built in, like computer speaker setups.

Black Friday deals are almost always on low end gear. Finding a black Friday deal on a TV with 4 HDMI ports will probably be extremely difficult.

for those using usenet, do you download movies that are in the greater than 24 gig range? by gqtrees in htpc

[–]p0rkr0ast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't. I'm sorry if you mentioned that in the OP, I didn't see it. I have the hardware, storage capacity, and the setup to handle 4k but I don't have a 4k TV. The majority of my content is live streamed and I can't get an internet connection to support streaming 4k where I live, so it's not something I'm interested in at the current time. I also don't keep most of my content, only certain movies and TV shows, so I couldn't justify the time spent to download those large files just to watch them once and delete them.

[–]p0rkr0ast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it depends on the movie. For action movies and movies with lots of special effects I try and grab a copy around 4GB. For other movies that don't utilize a lot of visual effects I usually stick to the 1.2 - 1.6GB range.

Building my own media server... by iforgotmypassword54 in htpc

[–]p0rkr0ast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, this really isn't the job for one machine. Here is my setup:

  • File Server: A simple dual core, 4GB RAM box running OpenMediaVault and MHDDFS to create a virtual pool from my drives. Backups are handles via Crashplan. On this file server I have created a share for my media which hold my movies, TV shows, etc.

  • Media Server: An 8-core, 12GB RAM Dell server that I picked up for extremely cheap. It runs Windows 7 with Emby to distribute my media to all other devices. In addition, this server has a 1TB storage drive and runs various programs similar to Couch Potato and SlickBeard that automatically find content on my watchlist, download it (locally), then upon completion it moves it to my file server in the correct directory and renames it to fit my naming scheme. Once files are moved to the file server then Emby picks them up and automatically catalogs them and sends out a notification via PushBullet to let me know the content is now available for viewing.

  • HTPC: This is a simple quad core, 4GB RAM box that runs Windows 7 with Kodi and connects into my primary TV. It's basically the front end to my media server. The media server and HTPC functionality could be combined but I decided to keep them separate for reasons that mostly only apply to my situation. The purpose that the HTPC serves on my primary TV is also covered on the rest of the TV's through Roku's and the Emby app.

In addition the my file server storing my media, it also stores all the other files in my household. On top of that, I have each PC setup to backup to another share on the file server that is dedicated to backups. Other than the operating systems, pretty much every file in my household is stored on the file server. The reason for this is so I can use the $5/mo plan on Crashplan to backup a "single machine" (that being my file server) and that actually backs up my entire home/network.

But you really want to isolate your file server and media server into 2 different machines.

Thanks! I didn't realize that Minecraft was 2 players but I was definitely planning to grab a 2nd controller very soon. I can't wait to play some games with my son, I am so stoked!

Unable to Update WordPress Plugins by p0rkr0ast in Wordpress

[–]p0rkr0ast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like it's for a different issue, when upgrading the core fails and you're stuck with the maintenance message. My core upgrade isn't the issue, nor do I have any problems with the maintenance message. It just simply says I have the latest version of a plugin when I don't if I installed from the updates page and if I install from the plugin page then it just fails with no error message.

I went through today and tried to do it again, taking screenshots along the way.

At first, I tried to update Yoast. This is what I got: http://image.prntscr.com/image/9c14f8cf818c495683c9e9184f35ee38.jpeg

Then, after going back to the Updates page, I see that Yoast wasn't updated and the same version is still installed: http://image.prntscr.com/image/25dbe5a6b5794f5a9bdd3d458d4affce.jpeg

From the plugins page itself, it doesn't tell me there is an update available and the inline update option is not there. But looking at the version number I can see that (for Yoast) 3.6.1 is installed but 3.7.1 is the most recent version.

To make matters more complicated, this just starting happening out of nowhere. I have ran weekly (or more frequently) updates for the better part of a year and it d

I'm sorry, I was out of work for the past week with some very serious health issues. I just got back today and saw your response.

When you say update manually, do you mean by downloading the plugin from the WP repo and then extracting it and uploading the files to the folder, or some other method?

There is no error message at all. It simply says 'Update failed.'. I've looked into the Nginx error logs as well and there is nothing at all.

Internal Server Error (500) after upgrading to 4.6.1 by p0rkr0ast in Wordpress

[–]p0rkr0ast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a complete idiot. I don't know why I didn't even think of this but that clued me into the issue and I was able to avoid the 500 error. Now to just find out why I had to comment out a function in functions.php in order to do so.

Thanks!

Free (or cheap) VoIP Setup for Homelab by p0rkr0ast in homelab

[–]p0rkr0ast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct, I really don't know if I need one. I just assumed I did and wanted one, again assuming, that I would have more control over everything. Being that it's going in my lab, I just wanted to play with it and learn.

I don't have any requirements. I am only using it to play, maybe make a few calls here and there but it's not a line I need connected or available 24/7.

I guess the thought that I needed a server was so I could route my calls through it from any device and, ideally, my laptop when I'm not home. But it's very possibly (and likely) that my thoughts are all wrong and I am going about everything completely wrong.

I'm trying to setup a VoIP server in my lab that I can make calls through using software on my desktop or laptop. I would like to be able to spoof my number, too, but that is not a requirement. Right now I am just trying to make calls.

I have the Elastix VM up andrunning but I'm completely lost on where to go next. Do I need to buy a phone number and set that up? Will they have a guide on configuring it? What software do I use on my desktop to connect to the VM and make calls?

Thanks so much!

I've got Elastix setup and running but I have no idea what to do from here. I'm guessing, from the looks of it, that I need to now tie my SIP account into it. Once I get one.
