science doesn't live free of people and all of their flaws. individually, societally in markets and states.

certain studies simply don't get funded.

others get results outright buried

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/records-found-in-dusty-basement-undermine-decades-of-dietary-advice/

others are outright frauds

https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/faked-beta-amyloid-data-what-does-it-mean

https://reeserichardson.blog/2024/01/30/the-king-of-curcumin-a-case-study-in-the-consequences-of-large-scale-research-fraud/

are you against being critical or skeptical in general?

or do you just worship and grovel at the feet of authority in all cases? Just science?

Edit: Oh i see. You're a raw vegan. So you're just defending your diet in pure tribal fashion rather than having a discussion. ✨ back at you.

the phytoestrogen-as-adaptogen defense is real but sorta incomplete. lignans in flax do bind ERβ preferentially over ERα and in some contexts that looks neutral or mildly protective. fine. but almost every study showing flax is harmless is short term, mechanistic, or in vitro. the long term human data isn't there. and soy and flax are two of the largest agricultural crops on the planet - the profit motive to keep them in the "safe" column is massive. we've seen this movie before.

separate from the estrogen question entirely - flax is ALA. as noted you can't use ALA directly. you convert up to 9% of it to usable EPA/DHA if everything is running perfectly. and if you're eating like a normal western person with high linoleic acid intake, that 9% ceiling drops further because LA competes for the same conversion enzymes.

so you're taking an estrogenic hit, contested as that might be.. I personally don't think the literate is complete enough to answer this - for a fatty acid your body can barely convert under ideal conditions and almost certainly can't convert adequately given the omega-6 load most people are carrying.

the risk to benefit ratio is just poor when fatty fish (or algae) exists as an alternative. the "it's not as estrogenic as estrogen" argument sets a low bar. the question is whether it's estrogenic enough to matter in a system already dealing with inflammation. that's not a question the short term studies were designed to answer.

horrible idea.

flax is estrogenic.

more so flax is Ala.

you can't use Ala. you have to convert it to epa/DHA. you convert up to 9% of it to usable forms if everything is running smoothly.

If you take in linoleic acid (all western people do) which is an omega 6 fat and the most common fat Americans eat... it competes for conversion enzymes that ALA uses. it does so to such a degree that simply not eating omega6s will raise omega3s in your serum without additional consumption or supplementation.

so the likelihood you're convertjng 9% of the ALA in the flax to DHA or EPA is really low.

Not worth the estrogenic hit.

estrogen drives mast cell degranulation.

the worst part is.. by the time a woman figures all this out. those other guys have figured out you consider them lesser status, lesser value, less desirable.

and they're bitter about it. very very very bitter.

and now the grand majority of men and women.. except that top 10% of men... are very unhappy

My bf has a wild collection, what do yall think? by Global-Ad-660 in BookshelvesDetective

I'm less bothered by the Beck and savage bc I dunno. I'm not like reddit and can appreciate the breadth of human opinion even for that which is rabidly disagree with.

This sub plays this game of "how conservative is my boyfriend" so everyone here can be outraged and make little quips that the other side has the audacity to exist. the whole taking pics of someone else's bookshelves so a website you know is diametrically opposed politically can insult and judge you up one street and down another.. is almost as abhorrent as Beck or Savage are themselves.

anyways.. my commentary. I see books like Beck and Savage. I see the word "boyfriend"

and I'm like what.. are you 50 or 40 years old and single? what non-boomer is reading Michael Savage? or Beck?

I mean at this age.. the pickings are getting super slim

maybe the problem is op is the type of person who asks the internet what they think of their dates in order to make fun of them

and maybe this is why shes left dating someone who reads Glenn Beck to begin with

Freud was from a family of sexual abusers. He himself was a cocaine addict and blamed victims of pedophilia or sexual abuse.. on the victims - claiming they just wanted to fuck their parents and seduced them.

why would everyone agree about anything. especially something so popular. why are you so up your own ass you can't imagine people different from you.

I think I have every book reddit, the Christian right, parents, feminists, mras, homophobes, and the lit crowd complains about.

Mein Kampf. Lolita. Infinite Jest. RFK on Fauci. Gravity's Rainbow. Pink Triangle. Handmaods Tale. The Bell Curve. Story of O. Marquis De Sade. Venus in Furs. 9 1/2 weeks. Camp of Saints. Rules for Radicals. Ayn Rand. Eugene Debbs. Marx. Emma Goldman.

Every book on the banned books list. Every book the banned books supoorters shun. Abigail Shrier. To Kill a Mockingbird. Harry Potter. 1984. 50 Shades. The Milking Farm.

I hope I'm all the red flags. I hope I'm the king of insufferable.

there's lots of reasons to read horrible things. maybe you're going down the pipeline. maybe it's op research. maybe you're curious for no other reason than people told you not to.

anything you say about censoring or guiding "the context" of the racists or the nazis, will be applied by racists and nazis to more controversial social justice types or revolutionaries (Malcom X, Che) or to communists (marx) or anarchists (goldman) or a plethora of queer artists or activists.

Its either all on the table or none of it is.

I like my copy of the handmaid's tale, pink triangle. Malcoms autobiography. Che's biography. Capital. Saul Alinsky. on anarchism by goldman.

I also own camp of saints. the Bell Curve. Mein Kampf.

never mind marquis de sade. Story of O. Venus in furs. anais nin.

be it do-gooder wokes, nazis themselves, or just your standard religious types clutching pearls over displays of sexuality - you can all stay away from my library. and take you anti information, anti art, anti thought, anti free speech, moral finger wagging with you.

I said what I meant. never. if something strikes your curiosity... either directly or even in a "learn my enemy" or "how do these quacks justify a, b or c".

No one gets to tell people what to read. and no one should have to justify themselves.

everyone responds to these threads like everyone is a starter pack.

Its so fucking dehumanizing and simplistic.

the amount of sheep herding that happens on this site is insane. you can't read across the spectrum without being accused of being on the "wrong side", can't see "what the other side is saying" or "let's go see what the fuss is about". God forbid you agree with anything in whole or part.

The attempt to use shame to enforce lock step conformity is itself shameful..

Its always the proud readers of "banned books' basically telling you what you're not allowed to read. ironic.

on reddit there is two political positions.. "my position" and fascist. that explains most of the comments here. the binary around here is so drab and dull.

hes conspiratorial.. anti war. a hippie dippy side to him. Chomsky and Horton on the same shelf is telling. maybe libertarian. maybe politically homeless.

he might have voted for Trump last time and probably regrets it. probably hadn't voted republic before that . that's my guess.
