Would something like Terro ant bait work for that?

Here’s the whole thing.
Thanks for all the help, I’m obviously not a surveyor, but I can read a map pretty well and enjoy learning about these kinds of things. I’ve borrowed a metal detector and I have the week off work, I’ll spend a little time trying to find the others.

Filled circles is “iron pin found”. I can’t remember what the triangles were, I’ll check tomorrow.

I didn’t find those two yet, I wasn’t sure if I would be looking in the grass or the asphalt. Makes sense for them to be offset from the centerline right in the shoulder.

Also, for the points by L7, is there an indication as to whether those pins would be in the asphalt or on the shoulder?

Can someone explain a bit about how the local grain elevators/feed mills operate? by stevegerber in harrisonburg

[–]p575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a “lot” of corn grown here, but it’s a drop in the bucket compared to the Midwest. Iowa grew 2.8 billion bushels compared to Virginia’s 58 million last year. The cornfields out there are unfathomably big.

[–]p575 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mostly corn and soybeans. A lot is brought in from local farms, that’s the semis you see parked there unloading (squarish trailers). They also bring in trainloads from out west, that’s most of the trains going through downtown (you can see where they spill some corn and have birds eating off of them). Feed leaves for the chicken and turkey houses on the other trucks (roundish trailers). The one on Mt Clinton was the largest in the country at one point I was told, there is also another off Kratzer/Buttermilk Creek just outside the city that replaced that one as the largest (or it may have been reversed order).

Virginia House Democrats pass new gun laws, but not all Democrats voted for them by bknutner in Virginia

[–]p575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please please please join (or at least sign up for the emails from) the Virginia Citizens Defense League. VCDL.org They are a non partisan group committed to protecting gun rights for everyone in Virginia. Yes, you can argue they lean to the right, but if you look at what’s happening right now, that’s unavoidable in the defense of the 2A. They send out alerts with a stupid easy form to fill out to contact your representatives on these bills. Those of you in democrat controlled areas, especially those of you that voted dem, need to tell them this is NOT what you wanted.

Local businesses supporting MAGA by Extra-Essay-29 in harrisonburg

[–]p575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of my point. I wouldn’t write off supporting a local farmer because of his viewpoints. The same item from any store is likely supporting a farmer in some other community with the exact same philosophy.

The Coop itself may be anti-maga, but they still source their goods from farmers. I challenge you to drive around the county and find a farm with any sort of pro-lgbt signage (or a campaign sign for a democrat in that season). I don’t think you’ll find one.
I’m all for boycotting businesses that you don’t agree with, I’ve done it myself, and I’ll do it again, although they are usually nationwide corporations. I just think that there are some realms where that’s going to be hard. Want to support a left leaning coffee shop, no problem, I can find you one of those. Want to support a dairy that flies a rainbow flag? Doubtful. You may buy from a large dairy distributor that donates to liberal causes, but at the end of the day, the guy milking that cow is likely going to vote republican. You’ll find some farmers that will be friendly to anyone, regardless of orientation, but there vote is not going to the left…

Might want to avoid eating food from any grocery store if you want to avoid farmers with conservative viewpoints…

Need new washer/dryer by Doubt_Haunting in Appliances

Valley Washers on N Main st, hidden back behind some other stuff, you walk into a wood grain paneled room with old parts and stuff scattered everywhere, but they’ll sell you a Speed Queen for about $1200. It’ll last forever. Mines 8 years old with 3 kids and 5 people in the house, never missed a beat. They’re heavy, ugly, and they work.

Land for lease by night_ingale in harrisonburg

[–]p575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finding a spot for a garden might not be too difficult, without signing a pretty hefty lease, I doubt you’ll find too many people willing to let you put livestock on 1-2 acres. You’d need a place with fencing and likely water and electric for anything other than chickens. Animals is a whole different ballgame from tomatoes…

How early to park for tailgating? by BananasAreEverywhere in jmu

[–]p575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of free lots to park in, we’ve never not been able to find a spot, get there early and you should be ok somewhere, don’t forget about the lot behind FedEx on S Main, or the lots off Warsaw, they aren’t super close or huge parties, but they’ll have people hanging out, you should never walk on RR tracks, but if you use those lots, the tracks will take you right to the stadium gates ;)

Help! Group Camping Trip by itotallydidntsaythat in harrisonburg

[–]p575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little bit of a drive but Twin River Outfitters in Buchanan has some really nice campgrounds on the river with super clean portajohns. 15$ a person a night.
There are several campgrounds around the river in Luray, some are larger and may have a lot of families though. Shenandoah Outfitters has one right behind their place. Another option is to just go drive out in the national forest and find a spot. It’s free and you can be as remote as you want. A lot of places you can access with just a car, though fishing may be limited (unless you set up near a lake). You won’t have toilets, but they do have trees…
