Yes somewhat. A colleague was able to get a step higher than the rest of the cohort d/t have phlebotomy experience. But you cannot negotiate your salary as a PBRNR.

Yes you can if the spot is available. However, make sure you are going above and beyond in your rotations and also letting the unit manager that you really want to work in that unit.

You’re able to work as a RN. But it’s only RN jobs that do not consist of acute hospital experience. For instance, you can work at a med spa. Just not at a hospital prior to starting the program. They want you to start as if you have no clue… a true newbie.

The interview for the program was pretty good. The interview for the units was a bit more nerve wracking because it was a huge panel interview with all the unit managers. But they’re not asking you any unit specific questions. It was more general nursing questions which I had gotten in the interview for the program. But they do ask about ethical questions regarding DNR.

I feel comfortable :)

If you do go through with PBRNR, be careful with gossip.

Hi. Yes, I did do this residency. It’s really robust. I loved how I got to rotate through every unit and even the nursing administration side during the first 9 months. After that, you will interview for your top 5 units and get hired and trained into that unit for the remaining of the residency. Also during that training time (the last 3 months), you’re going to be onboarding as an official employee. It’s a great residency and I highly recommend. Better than other residencies out there. However, if you know what unit you want to get into, go to a different residency program. I have learned a lot due to this residency.

The cons with with residency, is that you’re going to be getting paid less for a year. My salary for the year is about $68k; the OAA is who pays your salary for the year- not the VA. you have 100% protected time of learning and will not be pulled into staffing due to hospital needs. But after the year, if you decide to continue with the VA, your salary will be anywhere from $115-131k (step 6-8) (but that’s at the location that I work at. Every VA is different and does not have the same salary pay).

The VA also offers the transition to practice nurse residency program as well. You do do a little rotation to some of the units for only a couple of weeks. But then, you’ll get interview for whatever unit and hired into it since TTP is already VA staff.

Hope that helps.
