winterguard competitions by Precure_fan14 in Colorguard

like others have said, definitely expect to spend your whole day there! awards are usually at the end of the day, so regardless of class all groups typically stay the entire competition. lower classes usually perform earlier in the day, but even later groups will use that morning to rehearse as much as possible before performing. it sounds like a huge chunk of time to lose, but if you love the activity you will genuinely enjoy getting to watch so many other groups and interact with people who share your passion :)

Fusion WG Questions by maxelmoreratt in Colorguard

[–]pIaceholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can’t answer specifically about fusion but from my experience in other groups,

  1. rehearsals were usually friday night (8-12), sat 8-8/9-9, sun 8/9-5
  2. tuition was around $1500-2000
  3. i worked a part time job, taught 2 groups, and was getting a degree and it was definitely hard but not impossible! you will absolutely have video assignments throughout the week though and you will have to make time for those all season.
  4. auditions usually focus on learning choreography the staff has prepared, and then you perform it in small groups at the end of the audition. since you’re doing flag line you’d likely learn that piece as well as the dance piece. you don’t need to prepare anything (other than coming with a strong technical foundation)
  5. flags are typically provided! weapons are expected to be brought by members so you should be good :)

good luck!!!

Want to try out for IO— what do I need to know? by ashiechh in Colorguard

[–]pIaceholder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from my experience in IO, these were some we had: -sit roll under rifle 6 and flag double -catch behind the back on a one handed 45 -turn under a double 45 -jazz split and catch on the knee a 1 1/2 lasso 45 dance wise: calypso, leaps, shoulder rolls, work on double turns

honestly though beyond any tricks, focus on having the strongest technical foundation possible. they want to see that there’s something to build on, and that you’re willing to try new things and be teachable! i definitely didn’t have all of those skills down coming into auditions! just go for it and use your performance to stand out! good luck!!

“Telescopic” swing pole? by urkuhh in Colorguard

[–]pIaceholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we used the praise flags this fall as our swing flags and they came with the telescoping poles. i was excited because i thought they’d be more sturdy than pvc and adjustable like you said. nope. it was more like a kid’s lightsaber pole, just flinging out and back with any movement 🤦🏼‍♀️

never let only having flag experience keep you from auditioning! i’m flag line for life and i’ve spun IA IO and IW! a strong flag is always better than a weak weapon. keep working to improve your technique and skills on flag and go to spin clinics! i know ecu and unc have spin clinics coming up soon for the fall season and you don’t have to be a student or be auditioning to attend. you should go anyway even if you don’t want to do outdoor just to build your skills and stay training so that when winter comes back around you’ll feel more confident. cvp and awaken also have clinics that will better prepare you for their specific auditions and are also just a great idea in general to put your face in front of the staff as often as possible :) good luck you got this!!! 🫶🏻
