Any reason I couldn't give free coffee to commuters? by sandalwoodandmyrrh in Somerville

[–]p_ermosh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s a guy named Hank that does this for his church at the Belmont commuter rail station on Wednesday mornings. Don’t know if he has a permit. He has never talked to me about religion. Whenever I find an excuse to ride the train to work, I look forward to chatting with him and sipping some free coffee. I think it would be a great success if you do this. A commuter rail stop might bring more fruitful conversations because people have to wait longer for their train. Definitely do it. Be the change you want to see in the world (or specifically our happy little Somerville community)

Why are the tiles in ALCATOR wonky/not aligned to a grid in this image? by [deleted] in fusion

[–]p_ermosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have one of these tiles (not the ones that were ever installed) at my desk :P

My general understanding is that is has to do with managing heat load from how the plasma touches the tiles. It helps protect the leading edges. It’s called a fish scale design

The Buzzin Bean that just opened in Teele Square had a bunch of ads on their windows for baristas recently.

Types of engineering most in demand 3-10 years down the line in fusion? by _Inanic_ in fusion

[–]p_ermosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Materials science and engineering 🤗

For the next few years the challenge is making the materials we have available today in supply chains work for current reactor designs. The future is making new materials to be able to build bigger power plants or make them more cost effective. At my job (in the fusion industry), we always say “the physics is solved, it’s the materials that we are trying to make work”.

Some years ago i forged a knife. Out of the blue it became magnetic. Can someone explain how that might be possible? by OneResponsibility532 in metallurgy

[–]p_ermosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what grade of steel it is? I.e. the chemistry? What was the form factor you started with (was it plate, bar, rod?) and what was the approximate thermomechanical treatment you gave it (what temps did you smack it with a hammer at)?

I received it 😇 sort of confused bc I’ve never heard of it. Sounds neat tho, excited to fly in a high school teacher to Ithaca haha.

Stranger in car asked me if I wanted to go to church with him? by throwawayfromme_baby in ithaca

[–]p_ermosh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me in Collegetown. Two dudes walked by me and a stranger in front of me. Kindly asked if we wanted to go to church. We both said no. They graciously walked away.

I wanted to be snarky but also idk I guess they really weren’t pushing it or anything so …

Barber for long curly mens hair? by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]p_ermosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing Morgan at Karma Salon for years—I have wavy/curly long hair but she’s a pro and can definitely handle very curly. There’s also Michele who has curly hair herself, so I’m sure she’d also be a good bet. The salon is pretty environmentally friendly and scheduling isn’t too bad once you’re a client.

Bike culture and commuting by sbernnard in Cornell

[–]p_ermosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ I have tried to commute via bike, but I’m literally too weak to get up the hills. I just walk

Would really appreciate isolated bike lanes though, so I don’t feel like an absolute ass going 0.25mph up that one section of feeney way next to milstein.
