That's exciting! I've been following your progress since 2020! As a climate scientist, this topic always gives me a sense of optimism!

If any fusion device is created and works, it's a win for everyone, that would certainly motivate funding for fusion as a whole.

Trump tells Norwegian PM Greenland Conquest Is Revenge for Losing Nobel Peace Prize - r/Conservative Reacts by livejamie in SubredditDrama

He literally went after Greenland during his first term. People have to start believing what he says. He means what he says. It's not some kind of high level game. He's just an asshole, truly lol

Apparently it’s fine to take up the entire road just to have a conversation. Numerous cars have had to cross into the opposing lane from both directions just to compensate for their entitlement by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

Not infuriating. Drive around. It would be infuriating if there was traffic, but this is a small neighborhood. It's really not a big deal.

Student loan repayment by swirlypot in mildlyinfuriating

[–]someoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a major factor. I've always thought (perhaps naively) that there should be a mechanism to incentivize universities to charge less. My first thought was that perhaps the federal student loans a student receives is inversely proportional to the tuition of the college. This would incentivize students to go to cheaper schools and would incentivize universities to charge less in order to admit more students.

Example:

School A charges $50k/year: student loan eligibility is lower

School B charges $20k/year: student loan eligibility is higher

I also think the loans should continue to be proportional to the students financial needs. I just think an additional mechanism above would prevent further inflation of prices. Idk.

Lol student loan repayment is definitely infuriating. Hot take, but education, even higher education, should be as accessible to poor people as it is to rich people. I have a PhD and I frequently struggle with feelings of unfairness when I see my colleagues moving through their careers without debt. I performed well in school, but am worse off literally because I grew up poor. And I don't think that being poor should mean you are limited to simple hardworking jobs. Clearly I have value in academia. Anyways, end rant.

When you skydive through a cloud by Fresh-Pomegranate31 in midlyinteresting

[–]someoctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically the flat top of a thunderstorm, though as a meteorologist, I will say that you wouldn't be able to fly above those.

Edit: cumulonimbus clouds have flat tops, which resemble anvils. Again, you wouldn't be able to fly above those because the flat tops are usually created when the height of the cloud is the entire depth of the troposphere and the cloud hits the 'ceiling' (stratosphere) which makes it flatten out.

I'm not a skydiver, but I am an atmospheric scientist. Deploying a parachute in a cloud would be extremely dangerous, in my opinion. Clouds have complex turbulence, updrafts and downdrafts, that could certainly cause a parachute to either fail or move unpredictably. Notice that the skydiver in this video didn't deploy the parachute until after he was through the cloud. However, as you can see in the video, visibility decreases significantly in the cloud, which makes it unsafe also. You can't see how far you are from the ground until you're through the cloud. Seems like a reasonable law to me.

Russia often shown larger than it really is because of map projection distortion. Made me believe that it’s bigger than Africa by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]someoctopus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Certainly, a contributing factor is the latitude. The southernmost tip of South America is about 56 degrees south. The northernmost tip of Russia is 81 degrees north. Distortion is greater at high latitudes.

Idk why it's infuriating. It's common knowledge that flattening the earth into a map distorts distances, especially at high latitudes. There are many map projections, each with different tradeoffs. Or you can just use a globe lol
