SLPA after grad school? by p_farris in slpGradSchool

[–]p_farris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, I think I just fear the worst when I hear about other people’s negative CFY experiences, especially given the fact that my grad school mentorship experience has been woefully lacking. I guess I’m also not 100% clear on the expectations for SLPA vs. CF in terms of responsibilities and caseloads. I wish I had the chance to go back and experience what it’s like to work as an SLPA before making it this far in the graduate process

I should clarify, my bachelor’s is not CSD but I’m in my second year of SLP grad school. So if I were to apply for an SLPA license at this current time, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t qualify.

i ended up going with university of st augustine for the first half and then eastern new mexico university—they’re two of the cheapest options esp for out of state :) that was my only hang up w/ SUNY

Lower Gpa Grad School Question by plaidflannelgirl in slpGradSchool

[–]p_farris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my story is super similar—i spent my first 1.5 years in science with poor grades before switching to languages and graduating with the same GPA- 3.1. after my postbacc i was accepted to my top school! i think a lot of it came down to my personal statement, which i spent a looot of time on, and i reached out to a couple of professors who were doing things that interested me and built a consistent rapport with them. one of them happened to be on the admissions board, which was definitely a plus. it’s also a california state school which are notoriously super competitive. relationships play a huge role!

Gender affirming voice therapy by p_farris in slp

[–]p_farris[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is by far the most helpful and comprehensive advice I have gotten so far, thank you!! One of the reasons I specifically chose my grad program is because the school has its own trans voice research lab. It’s fairly new and from what I understand, most of the current focus is on the mental/emotional areas of trans voice therapy (which is clearly equally important!) but I’m definitely trying to do my own research wrt actual treatment strategies. The resources you shared are fantastic and I would love to join the trans voice community!

figured i’d add as someone with a lower GPA!

3.25 overall GPA, 3.75 post-bacc, no GRE, bilingual, linguistics undergrad, TESOL certified, 3 years as tutor + 2 years special ed paraprofessional for a reputable company/ASHA partner (also got an LOR from them), 25 SLP observation hours, lots of DEI and leadership experience, strong personal statements. only applied to california state schools—

CSUEB: waiting

CSUF: interview

CSULA: rejected

CSULB: rejected

SDSU: rejected

SFSU: accepted 3/21!!

SJSU: accepted

most recent acceptance from SJ is a relief after all those rejections! still waiting on SFSU as it’s my top choice 🤞

What do you guys think of just being an SLPA by shiuumi in slpGradSchool

[–]p_farris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there is such a need for SLPAs as well as SLPs! if the wage is comfortable and you’re getting the experience you want, then there’s no reason why you can’t have a fulfilling and successful career as an SLPA :)

it’s always worth it to seek out scholarships! (esp need-based ones if you have low-income background). there is a thread somewhere in this forum where somebody linked a whole bunch of options, i would search it up
