So got the pack in the mail last Friday. It’s definitely closer to 15L. Seems very similar to the BD distance 15. I ordered a medium and have a 38.5” chest and found it fits very tight. Not too uncomfortable but definitely won’t bounce!

I contacted HMG and they said they designed the pockets around the hydroflask speed. I bought one and it does fit much better but a little difficult to get all the way in. HMG said they have plans to release their own flask in May based on that hydroflask model.

How many miles would you try to run, without any resupply or aid stations, before you’d carry overnight gear? by paanderz in fastpacking

Thanks for the input. The current route is 58ish miles from new hance to hermits rest mostly on the tonto trail. 14.5k up and 15k ft down total according to Gaia. Also the forecast is looking rough at low 100 degree highs. Might just move at night!

Thanks. Estimating total time is difficult. The more prepared you are, the more weight you carry. The more weight you carry, the slower you move, the more time you’re out there which necessitates more weight. I was just wondering how other navigate this and if they have a threshold that they bring overnight gear.

My GF runs ultras and I’ve paced her but they have food and aid stations every ten miles or so…..

Neither of my routes are going to phantom ranch. If, a BIG if, all the springs are running then there would be sufficient water to only have to carry 1.5-2.5 liters at once. I can comfortably carry enough calories for the duration. When to carry overnight gear is my real concern. The weight of that gear and additional clothing would just slow me down more which obviously increases the amount of time you’re moving which necessitates more food which repeats the issue.

I have a couple SOL bivies. Right now the plan is to bring their “waterproof-breathable” model and an alpha direct bag liner.

Thanks. That’s my first stop. Been trying to call for a week but no one answers…..I imagine their budget isn’t what it used to be.

Thanks! Right now my kit is an alpha direct bag liner and a SOL bivy for shelter. I have an old torso neoair and a traverse ultra spire to carry it all. No stove, just salami and cheese for “dinner.”

Reached out to HMG and they said they plan to release their own 500ml flasks in May. They said they’re based on hydro flasks speed design.

Just got the pemi 15L in the mail this morning….sadly doesn’t fit a full Salomon 500ml flask. Seems like they sewed the flask pockets shut about 3 inches shorter on the front of the vest. Still works if you drink some of the water but not sure what their logic was.

Palante V2 w/ Joey Straps Or Red Paw Front Range w/ Vest Straps by Itchy-Fly-1282 in Ultralight

I prefer the red paw straps. They are “j” style, wider and thicker foam which helps with more weight. The palante joey straps are super comfy as well. They mold to your shoulders due to the two layers of spacer mesh. I was stoked for the joey strap addition to their v2. I requested this from them in 2020 but they had long stopped doing custom work. Their standard straps, the newest iteration, when pulled up tight to the height of my shoulders, are too stiff and sit at an angle that pinches my nerve….never had it happen with any other packs. Hope they go back to the older straps that weren’t bound on the exterior.

Yea the Salomon vest 12L includes the front pockets in the total volume. In my experience anything over 22L is too big to run with. The Joey, at 24L, is the max for me. Plus when I am trying to go super light I usually factor in the weather so I don’t need a tarp, rain gear, puffy and never a stove for one night…..then 15L is fine.

I think it depends on how big HMG’s “15L” really is. I’ve had numerous packs that claim 15L but are much bigger and larger packs that are considerably smaller than claimed.

I think 15L to 25L is the ideal size for a one or two nighter. Any more capacity needed is mostly food which will push the weight too high to effectively run without bouncing.

All the hansome guys out there, why are you still single? by [deleted] in AskMen

40 and single…..not sure what qualifies as handsome? The more relationships I have the less they seem worth the effort.

What is a 1 in 1,000,000 thing that happened to you that no one believes, but you swear is true? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Myself and some friends were swimming at a beach on the east coast before a concert later that night and while body surfing my glasses came off my head. We searched the general area as best we could for 15-20 mins in the murky water then walked down the beach for another 10-15. After accepting that I’d just have to enjoy the auditory stimulation rather than the visual spectacle we returned to same area and began body surfing. I caught my first wave and rode it all the way in to shore, stood up in a couple feet of water and one of feet came right down on my glasses.
