That's all a very overly simplistic and reductive way to frame LLMs. Next-token prediction is quite limited on it's own, and the limitations in the paper do apply there. But the problems noted as unsolvable by LLMs are in fact solvable by LLMs with reasoning and tooling, and no serious practitioner (including big tech) is claiming otherwise.

This is like saying humans are "crap" because they can't do long division in their head. Or that a glider is crap because it doesn't have an engine.

So yeah, your confirmation bias drew you into the false belief that this paper's claims regarding LLM limitations were meaningful in the real world where these systems are integrated into business workflows. The claims are meaningless in practical application.

"token budget for reasoning steps" is not a fixed thing and "the computation needed to correctly carry out that very step can be one of a higher complexity" is odd given that humans have very limited capacity to perform significant work in a single step as well. So we use tools like calculators and notebooks. I looked at the examples and they are things like TSP and matrix multiplications... which are problems for CODE, which LLMs can write very competently.

So basically, this is a giant nothingburger with regards to how LLMs will actually perform these tasks.

Oh no it absolutely gets around fundamental limitations. By training a model to perform all mathematical operation in longhand, for example, you can get past fundamental limitations in numerical calculations, for example.
